The Rainbow Six: Siege Twitter account posted a short, four-second teaser for the next content update titled "Operation Void Edge". This will be the first update of the next decade for the long-running, tactical, first-person shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal. Coming hot off the heels of a well-received 2019, the growing shooter aims to hit the ground running this year. 2019 featured four seasons that included new Operators to unlock, new maps to learn, a new battle pass system, dozens of new skins, and even reworks to prior maps.

Releasing in December of 2015, Rainbow Six: Siege was initially met with a mixed reception. At the time, Ubisoft was knee-deep in a rather unsavory scandal after being caught misrepresenting their games at prominent presentations such as E3. The first title to catch the brunt of this was Watch Dogs in 2014 when first-look featured immersive and impressive next-generation graphics that were promptly downgraded with the game’s launch. This created a chaotic and negative atmosphere surrounding Ubisoft and their upcoming games. Siege was the following title to feature these graphical downgrades and various bugs that had yet to be ironed out by release. Ubisoft Montreal vowed to continue working on the game, and over the course of the next four years fundamentally reshaped the perception of the then-contentious shooter.

Along with the short teaser, the Twitter post also reads, “Look into your darkness.” This potentially hints at new gameplay mechanics that tend to be introduced with new operators. A reputable source suggests that fans should expect a male and female Operator, as has become a tradition. Much like operators in the past, both will be assigned to Counter Terrorism Units with unique lore. Codenames Oryx and Yana have circulated the fanbase, meaning that these may be the names of the upcoming characters. The leak suggests one of the operators is capable of charging through walls while the other has the ability to create holograms.

Other leaks about year 5 have been located on the internet. One such leak says that the beloved yet underplayed and weak Operator, Tachanka, will receive a long-awaited rework sometime this year. There has also been speculation about a replay mode which could give players the ability to examine their past games in detail. Along with that, map bans could see their anticipated release sometime in 2020 as well.

While the 2010s have been tumultuous for Rainbow Six: Siege, the years following its release, dotted with dozens updates and improvements, have seen many players warm up to Ubisoft Montreal. The willingness for this studio to maintain a game that could have easily been dropped after the initial criticism has inspired many fans to consider it one of the most inspirational comeback stories within gaming.
