spider man 4 5 Raimi and Maguire To Return For Spider Man 4 (and 5)

[Update: E! Online‘s Ted Casablanca reports that all talk on Spider-Man 4, as well as 5, is “jumping the gun” according to his sources. He adds that Tobey Maguire has not signed on to return calling the earlier claims “premature.” Although it appears Maguire will probably return. – Jamie.]

Despite the fact that it made $900 million, I’ve yet to meet a single person who actually liked Spider-Man 3. Hell, the audience I saw it with went full-on MST3K resulting in huge laughter during the midnight screening.

But since its release, there have been countless rumors regarding the future of the Spider-Man franchise. “Is Tobey Maguire going to stop playing Webhead?” and “What will Sam Raimi’s involvement be… if any?” were among the many questions asked by fanboys across the internet.

Now it looks like plans are under-way to get Webhead’s fourth cinematic outing to the silver screen ASAP.

According to Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood Daily, Sony has hammered out new deals for director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire to return for Spider-Man 4 among other things.

Even though most people would prefer her non-participation, Sony supposedly “would never recast” Kirsten Dunst as Spidey’s main-squeeze Mary Jane Watson. Although Finke was quick to point out no deal is in place for her yet – this despite the fact that her character will return.

“Once you find out who the villain is, you’ll know who’s playing it” says their source(s) regarding the identity of the next Spider villain. Um, okay. I would assume then they’re referring to Dylan Baker’s Dr. Conners. That’s the Lizard for all of you non-comic book readers out there!

And what about those rumors at the start of the summer of Spider-Man 4 and 5 being filmed concurrently? Apparently, Sony is considering it. While those God-awful Pirates of the Caribbean and Matrix sequels are not the best example of this, it did work for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Honestly, I find it hard to believe Sony is willing to fork all that money to Raimi and Maguire considering the reception of 3. I’m sorry, but this franchise needs new blood behind the camera. On the other hand, Jamie Vanderbilt is writing the script – the same guy who penned the most excellent Zodiac, which starred Robert Downey Jr.

Not to mention, Tobey’s getting on up there in years. He’ll be 36 years-old when its released in May 2011. You think he can still effectively play a character whose in his early-20s by then?

And what’s with the sudden “sacred cow” of keeping Kirsten Dunst around when damn-near nobody wants her (or her character) to come back?

I’m pretty iffy about this news, folks. Personally, I’d take it with a grain of salt until we hear something official from Sony.

Spider-Man 4 is currently aiming for a May 2011 release.

  1. Ah crap, and I was so hoping for a more scientific, wise-cracking Peter iteration. A new MJ would be nice though.

But for God’s sake, can we please just have one villain?

  2. New blood would be nice. But Hollywood likes to stick with what’s worked before, financially at least.

  3. I was hoping for a clean slate.
    Dissapointing news.

  4. Best news since Ghost Rider 2!!
Oh and pleased to meet ya Jamie, I loved Spider Man 3.

Let the casting debate begin !!!!!

  5. Hopefully Sony reallizes the mistakes made in S3 (ie throwing Venom in the mix when the story was obviously meant to be Sandman, Spidey, and Harry).

I wish Sony would let Raimi use the classic villains he chooses, Venom just threw it all off (afterall, S2 was damn near a perfect superhero movie). I am a little tired of Raimi showing every villain as being not-such-a-bad guy, and Lizard would be no different.

  6. Will it sounds like at least for #4 it may be Doc Connors/The Lizard. But if they’re filming 4/5 combined, that means we’ll be looking at multiple villains for sure.

  7. I hate the double post….

  8. Ques, why does Spider Man’s girlfriends allways have to be rescued?
And why would the Lizard kill Gwen?
What’s he get out of that?

    2 Spiderman’s fighting ??
The fight scene from “They Live” comes to mind. :-)

  9. And what is MST3K??

  10. Is that how they introduce Lizard in the comics?
Sounds a little too comic book for a film.
I can’t see why the clone spider man would automaticaly be evil?

  11. One thing that’s great about the Spider Man dvd’s,,,

    Chapter selection !!
Skip right past that Mary Jane scene. ;-)

  12. I guess the next films will follow in line with the ‘dark’ theme, not cartoon venom comedic wasteful jazz emo dark, but darker in style and story like TDK.

I don’t know what I want from this, on one side I’d like to see Tobey back because I buy him as Spidey (even though I hated Spidey 3) and on the other side, I wouldn’t mind them rebooting…but if they were to reboot, I need another 10 year lapse…we literally just came off the super successful trilogy, it doesn’t make any sense to be rebooting so soon. I actually think that would piss off more people than it would brining Raimi and Tobey back.

I want to see it tied into the Avengers movie (maybe the end intro-ing the new avengers with spidey, heh..i know thats way to much to ask for and tobey would be too old)

  13. I allways knew Sony wasn’t going to mess with the Raimi / Maguire combo.
However ppl feel about Spider Man 3, it was a MONSTER HIT, and there’s nothing you can do about it. There coming back. 8-)

  14. Great to hear that Spidy is now moving along towards a new movie (or 2!),mixed feelings about same team coming back, but if that’s what’s happening then I’ll get right behind it and hope they’ll have learned from the flat/boring bits of no;3 and give us an action packed fast paced cracker of a blockbuster!!!
I hope the Rhino gets a call up for some big screen action somehow even though I’d love him to show up in a future Hulk movie!
There were quite dark scary bits in both Spidey 1 & 2 concarning the villains that seemed to be missing from 3.I hope Raimi can re-introduce this elememt into future movies and have a movie that gives fun, action, humour and terror mixed in to the movie to give us the best superhero movie yet!!!
    Rock On!!!

  15. ya, but everyone who went to see Spidey 3 now know it wasn’t such a good idea. Like pirates 3 and matrix 3 made tons of money…but not all of them would jump back in the following year to see the next because they were scammed the year prior, lol.

Speaking for myself, I have lost faith in that crew for what they did in Spidey 3. They showed that they no longer cared about delivering a good product and good story.

They just wanted to market the hell out of it so badly that everyone would see it and they did… At least i am happy about their Spidey 3 toylines and Pirates 3 toylines being awful failures :)

  16. Avi Arad

  17. @greenknight

Regarding Venom, very true. He was shoehorned into the story and it showed.

    Vic

  18. No more Kirsten Dunst as MJ pl. Move Gwen > Movie MJ. If you’re going to put MJ in future films she needs to be recast.

  19. No new cast, just a better story, the actors are fine. :) that is all

  20. I’ll go against the grain here as I enjoyed Spiderman 3. Yes, there were too many characters but unlike some I enjoyed the musical number. I just thought it worked. While not as good as 1 and 2 its still a solid entry in the series. This is not a Superman 3 or 4 or Batman and Robin which many who pile on claim it to be. Sam Raimi is just to talented to be put in that category. I certainly understand movie watching is subjective but I like Spiderman 3 and look forward to part 4.

  21. My only compaint about spidey 3 is that Venom was shoehorned in. it would’ve been better to go with the orginal idea of using vulture to seduce SAndman (sorry but Vulture in a movie would rule.) then maybe people would still enjoy the francise instead or defaming the thrid one.
Ps. I’m glad they are keeping Tobey as spidey, he has that nice average guy look that is needed for the spider. Now if there only more wise-cracks from the spider then we would be in business

  22. I can see Topher getting the call to play Venom again.

You guys say that Venom was shoehorned into Spider Man 3,,,
(IMO), no more than Two Face was shoehorned in TDK…
