One of the most fun aspects of each of the Spider-Man movies (and just about the best thing about the third one) is the small appearance of Bruce Campbell. He was the wrestling announcer in the first film (who actually, if you remember, came up with the name “Spider-Man” for Peter Parker), the snooty Usher who prevented Peter from seeing Mary-Jane’s play, and the Maitre d’ who helped him propose to her in the third one.

Well, furthering his love for the Spider-Man universe (which has seen him, along with Tobey Maguire signing on for a fourth and fifth film), he has told MTV that he would like to have Campbell back for the fourth film:

“I would love to have Bruce in ‘Spider-Man 4′. I haven’t talked to him about it yet, but he’s such a source of humor for me. I love working with the guy. He’s a great and really dedicated actor, as much as we kid each other all the time. I haven’t spoken to him yet, but I hope that he would [be in the film].”

“I don’t know what [his role] would be yet,” Raimi admitted. “Until then, we can only hope that the actor (and his chin) will play an important role in “Spider-Man 4.”

As an avid film fan, I love seeing these two work together in any sort of capacity. Whether it be a director-main star relationship, such as the Evil Dead series, or simply Campbell making a quick cameo in a series of films, it doesn’t matter. These two are legends of the film world, Raimi for his talent as a filmmaker, Campbell for his iconic status, and any chance to see them work together is welcomed.

I don’t see why Campbell shouldn’t be in the fourth Spider-Man movie, or the fifth one for that matter. It’s like the Alfred Hitchcock cameos from all of his films – you just expect to see him in there. But who could he play? As Raimi said above he doesn’t quite know yet, but perhaps he could play someone a bit more important this time around. Not a main character who is integral to the outcome of the story, but a bit more than just an announcer… or an usher… or a Maitre d’.

Maybe if and when Campbell accepts Raimi’s wish to have him back for an appearance in Spider-Man 4, that will spur them on to getting on with the much anticipated Evil Dead 4.

One can only hope…

Do you like the idea of Campbell coming back for another Spider-Man cameo? If so, what type of character should he play?

Spider-Man 4 is slated for a May 6th, 2011 release.
