Rachel Weisz May Join Jeremy Renner in ‘The Bourne Legacy’

A fourth installment in the Bourne franchise is coming and we know Matt Damon won’t be involved, nor will his character for which the film is named after. Instead, the story will follow a new character, another special ops assassin that came from another – apparently more dangerous – secret government recruitment/training program. Playing that character in The Bourne Legacy will be Jeremy Renner.

With presumably an entirely new cast, despite the film taking place in the same continuity and perhaps even the same time as the Bourne trilogy, Universal Pictures is currently looking for a leading lady for The Bourne Legacy and they want Rachel Weisz.

Selling a Bourne film without Matt Damon headlining will not be of concern for Universal with a cast led by Renner and Weisz, two of the highest profile actors in the business. Since The Hurt Locker, Renner has become the most in-demand talent, picking up roles including a soon-to-be-fan-favorite character in Marvel’s The Avengers next summer and the responsibility of taking over the Mission: Impossible franchise from Tom Cruise.

Weisz is also busy and may have some decisions to make with her being in talks to play Evanora,┬áthe Wicked Witch of the West, in Sam Raimi’s Oz: the Great and Powerful. Oz shoots this summer and The Bourne Legacy begins in September so we’ll have to see if Weisz is abot to work on either or better yet, both.

Are you interested in a Bourne-titled movie without the title character if Renner and Weisz headline the project? Don’t be surprised if the film features a surprise cameo by Matt Damon himself, leading to a fifth film with everyone involved. Damon already expressed interest in Bourne 5 if director Paul Greengrass came back with him to make it.

The Bourne Legacy is tentatively scheduled to hit theaters on August 3, 2012.

  1. Rachel will still have time to do both, Oz is not coming out until 2013, so she has time to do that film and Bourne.

    • It’s not the release date that affects their schedules, it’s the shooting schedules ;)

  2. Renner is just Damon 2.0. He is a lazy choice for the new movie. I like Rachel but this movie doesnt interest me at all, it’s just the studio trying to make money off good movies.

  3. Renner proved his skills in the “Hurt Locker”, a fantastic film BTW. He’s upcoming, and I think can pull this off for the Bourne series, BUT, I would have had it so Damon made a Cameo as Jason Bourne for the film to tie things off.

A Bourne film/title, without actually have “Bourne” in it, is weird to say the least. It will be interesting to see how it all comes together. Weize is OK for me, I’m not 100% sure on this but only time will tell.

  4. Rachel Weisz is lovely, gorgeous, stunning and truly beautiful.

  5. Why call it Bourne? It doesnt make sense. If you cant get the title right then I fear for the whole project. I love the Bourne movies so I am not hating. Name the movie for who is in it. If you want to bring back Damon for a part five then fine. But call THIS movie the way it is. Not Bourne.

  6. you know i’m ok with a new character and cast
but putting the bourne name on it is just ridiculous

the studio is trying to play off the name of a good movie
because any other name won’t be as as bourne

  7. I like Rachel Weiss but I think it is a disgrace for not having Matt Damon. He built the whole series and should be asked back. Instead of trying to just make money and losing alot of Bourne fans, Universal should get Damon back and write a really good script. I bought all the books, DVD’s, bonus disks, music and went to see The Bourne Ultimatium six times at the theatre. I will not support this movie without the person who made the character come to like and that was Matt.

  8. Renner and Weisz – I’m all there.

  9. Rachel Weisz is a true screen beauty. In my mind I’ve already paid to see this movie, everytime I look at my bank balance I’ll see the the amount minus the price of a movie ticket.

  10. Let us see when The Bourne Legacy came August 2012, and i will watch Matt Damon in his Bourne 5…that’s for sure…
