Which Of These 25 Movies Were Snubbed Oscars Nominations?
When the nominations for the 89th Academy Awards were recently announced, the wealth was largely spread among the 2016 titles that most had expected to see represented in the various categories. Of the movies that were completely ignored by Oscar, perhaps the most egregious snub belonged to Deadpool. Certainly, at the very least, it was a safe bet that the movie would end up represented in such categories as Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Mixing. Instead, it was completely shut out of this year’s competition. On the other hand, one movie that did unexpectedly crack the line-up was the critically lambasted Suicide Squad, which can now lay claim to being an Oscar-winning film thanks to its Best Makeup award.
It’s just another example of the game of Russian roulette that the Oscar race often resembles, with some high-profile titles being completely ignored while others manage to sneak into the race with a solitary bid. With that in mind, here are 25 films that all could have conceivably been part of Oscar history. Instead, some were snubbed — they received a total of zero nominations — while others managed to squeeze out at least one. Can you separate the contenders from the no-shows?
