Although Supernatural lacks the feminism at the heart of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in many ways, it is the show’s most obvious successor. Both series began with a Monster of the Week format which laid the foundation for a rich mythology that led to more serialized storytelling. Another important similarity is that the beating heart of either show is the complex relationships between the characters. Although these worlds have been built from the ground up, they bear enough similarities to our own to never feel like a place that we couldn’t also inhabit.
BtVS is a genre show that transcended preconception about genre shows and Supernatural certainly followed in those footsteps by subverting expectations and defying conventionality. Both series feature characters that are layered, complex and completely relatable. They are also lovable enough to have inspired rabid fanbases. BtVS maintains such adoration over twenty years after it first aired and Supernatural is currently wrapping up its 12th season. Aside from all that, both shows cleverly use all manner of literal hell as a metaphor for the figurative struggles we all face on a daily basis.
