Director Quentin Tarantino may have originally made a name for himself with modern crime thrillers like Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, but his two most recent films have taken a few leaves from the history books - then crossed out parts and added plenty of notes in the margin. Both Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained use real and very sensitive periods of history as a backdrop for classic tells of revenge and retribution, so many are wondering if Tarantino will continue that pattern in his next project.
Exactly what that next project is remains uncertain, though multiple different ideas have been mentioned. Tarantino usually puts out a new movie every two to five years, so there's no doubt that he already has something in development; the only question is, what will it be?
A new answer has emerged during Tarantino's appearance on The Tonight Show this week, during which Jay Leno pressed the filmmaker for details about what he's currently writing. Tarantino remained tight-lipped about the plot details of his current script, but nonetheless gave away one significant piece of information:
"I can't talk that much about it, but I will say one thing. I haven't told anybody about this publicly, but I will say the genre. It's a Western. It’s not a Django sequel, but it’s another Western. I had so much fun doing Django and I love westerns so much, that after I taught myself how to make one, it’s like 'OK, now let me make another one now that I know what I'm doing.'"
This isn't the first time that Tarantino has expressed an interest in making more Westerns. He's previously mentioned abolitionist John Brown as a great potential subject for a biopic, and HitFix is reporting that a couple of sources point to Tarantino wanting to make an Australian Western set in the Outback. With Tarantino having said that Kill Bill Vol. 3 will probably never happen, it seems reasonable that he would want to continue with his current trend.
Prior to this interview, Tarantino indicated that he wanted to make a movie called Killer Crow, which would return to the World War II time period and follow a collection of black troops who are betrayed by the American military and go on an "Apache warpath," slaying swathes of white soldiers on their journey to Switzerland. This doesn't sound like the Western that Tarantino mentioned in the Tonight Show interview, especially since he said that the genre of that film was the first detail about it that he had revealed to the public, and the mystery makes it all the more intriguing.
