Like many high profile filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino has developed a small stable of actors that frequently appear in his projects. Whether it's because that actor is particularly suited to the director's style of filmmaking or the director is just a fan of his or her work, a bond can be struck between the person in front of the camera and the one behind it.

In Tarantino's case, that list of regular players includes such acclaimed talent as Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman and Harvey Keitel. However, in addition to those names, Tarantino has given established stars a chance to either revitalize their careers (John Travolta in Pulp Fiction, Pam Grier in Jackie Brown) or shake up their own filmography by dipping their toe in Tarantino's playground (Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds, Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained).

In an interview with Charlie Rose (via The Playlist), Tarantino has stated that there is another actor he'd love to work with, none other than Johnny Depp. Here's what the director had to say:

"We would love to work together. We've talked about it for years. Not that we get together and talk about it for years, but from time to time. We're obviously fans of each other. It just needs to be the right character. I just need to write the right character that I think Johnny would be the right guy to do it with. And if he agrees, then we'll do it. And then it'll be magical. I haven't written the perfect character for Johnny Depp as of yet. Maybe someday I will, maybe someday I won't. We'll see."

Tarantino goes on to mention that Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Michael Caine are also on his wish list, and while either of those living legends will surely bring something special to one of his films, Depp in particular is a fitting choice for a Tarantino film.

Depp in 'Once Upon a Time in Mexico'

Moviegoers may recall that Depp collaborated with director Robert Rodriguez – Tarantino's close friend – for the 2003 action flick Once Upon a Time in Mexico, portraying a corrupt CIA agent who gets in over his head on a mission south of the border. Rodriguez and Tarantino have collaborated numerous times over the years, including the 2007 double feature Grindhouse, so it's not much of a shock that Depp and Tarantino may have been friendly over the years. If a Depp-Tarantino collaboration ever occurs, one can only imagine that the pairing would similarly result in the kind of magnetic performance that DiCaprio gives in Django Unchained.

Some fans have also grown weary of Depp's relentless team-ups with Tim Burton - Dark Shadows in particular was a major critical flop and a financial underperformer domestically - and, one can assume, he can only reprise his signature role as Captain Jack Sparrow for so long. Perhaps the very thing Depp's career needs is to deliver the kind of edgy, compelling performance that Tarantino's films are known for.

Would you like to see Depp appear in a Tarantino film? What other stars do you think are the perfect fit for the director's upcoming projects, such as the discussed third chapter in a potential Basterds/Django historical revenge trilogy? Let us know in the comments.

Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained is in theaters now.
