Shrek 2 introduced the world to the Antonio Banderas-voiced version of Puss in Boots, and the adorable but lethal feline was an instant hit with moviegoers. Two underwhelming installments later and the Shrek franchise has seemingly reached the end of its rope – which in Hollywood means its time for either a spinoff or reboot.

DreamWorks Animation decided to go with the former, and has now released a teaser trailer, along with an official movie poster, for Puss in Boot’s upcoming solo vehicle.

Originally planned as a direct-to-DVD feature, Puss in Boots will hit theaters this fall and be shown in 2D, 3D, and even IMAX 3D as well. Banderas is back to voice the suave orange cat, whose days as an adventurer prior to his meeting up with Shrek are explored in this film – because if there’s one origin story that needs to be told, even more than Peter Pan Begins, it’s Puss in Boots Begins (ahem).

The computer-animated toon follows Puss as he teams up with Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and the tenacious Kitty (Salma Hayek) to try and find the famous goose responsible for laying golden eggs. Does anyone else find it amusing that this is the movie which once again features Banderas and Hayek as an flirtatious couple on an adventure, following in the steps of Desperado?

This is a pretty standard trailer for a DreamWorks animated pic, complete with the pop culture references (here, referring to Inception and Banderas’ turn as Zorro), and the title character rockin’ it along to a hip dance tune of sorts. It’s not a bad trailer, honestly, and had Puss in Boots not been preceded by four Shrek movies (not to mention the plethora of Shrek copycats – pun not intended), it might’ve seemed more original.

The Puss in Boots character remains charming in his own way, and maybe this film will mix things up more than the past two Shrek pictures did. On the other hand, Shrek the Third director Chris Miller is responsible for this new movie, so best not to get your hopes up just yet.
