Shrek 2 introduced the world to the Antonio Banderas-voiced version of Puss in Boots, and the adorable but lethal feline was an instant hit with moviegoers. Two underwhelming installments later and the Shrek franchise has seemingly reached the end of its rope – which in Hollywood means its time for either a spinoff or reboot.

DreamWorks Animation decided to go with the former, and has now released a teaser trailer, along with an official movie poster, for Puss in Boot’s upcoming solo vehicle.

Originally planned as a direct-to-DVD feature, Puss in Boots will hit theaters this fall and be shown in 2D, 3D, and even IMAX 3D as well. Banderas is back to voice the suave orange cat, whose days as an adventurer prior to his meeting up with Shrek are explored in this film – because if there’s one origin story that needs to be told, even more than Peter Pan Begins, it’s Puss in Boots Begins (ahem).

The computer-animated toon follows Puss as he teams up with Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and the tenacious Kitty (Salma Hayek) to try and find the famous goose responsible for laying golden eggs. Does anyone else find it amusing that this is the movie which once again features Banderas and Hayek as an flirtatious couple on an adventure, following in the steps of Desperado?

This is a pretty standard trailer for a DreamWorks animated pic, complete with the pop culture references (here, referring to Inception and Banderas’ turn as Zorro), and the title character rockin’ it along to a hip dance tune of sorts. It’s not a bad trailer, honestly, and had Puss in Boots not been preceded by four Shrek movies (not to mention the plethora of Shrek copycats – pun not intended), it might’ve seemed more original.

The Puss in Boots character remains charming in his own way, and maybe this film will mix things up more than the past two Shrek pictures did. On the other hand, Shrek the Third director Chris Miller is responsible for this new movie, so best not to get your hopes up just yet.

  1. The Shrek movies really petered out starting with the second one. I hope Puss in Boots is worthy of the character. Not just dumb hijinks with him instead of Shrek.

  2. They should’ve spoofed the old spice commercials: “Kittens, look at your owner, now look at me – back at your owner – now back at me…”

    • That would have been awesome!!!! That is a great idea. You should forward it to the powers that be. lol

    • When I first saw the trailer at the movies a few hours ago, I thought they were going to do that! Oh well, either way the trailer is pretty good.

  3. I saw the trailer for this last night when I went to see Rango. Everyone got really excited about it. Hopefully it will be as good as the first two Shrek movies.

  4. The poster is (surprisingly) badass!

    • I agree!

  5. I loved the Shrek movies (I haven’t seen the 4th one yet) and Puss is one of my favorite characters in the series. I will be checking this one out.

  6. I hope they make one f donkey as well :) this looks pretty good!

  7. Wow this trailer was very enjoyable. I laughed as soon as I heard the song, it was perfect for him. I’m glad that they seem like they are going to go back to making spoofs at pop culture. I think that is something they steered away from after the second movie, which in my opinion was their downfall (not to mention Justin Timberlake… ugghhhh!) The only thing that has me cautious is that it is by the director of Shrek The Third, hopefully he had nothing to do with that script and this film will be great and refreshing. I will be watching this.

  8. I loved the ad! I loled at the song a lot. For soe reason it makes me want to buy boots towards the end. He seems even more suave now lol XD cant wait to see it

  9. This is a surprisingly decent movie trailer.

When I first heard about this Puss In Boots spin off I thought it was to be terrible. I wasn’t even really a fan of Puss in the Shrek movies, he’s really not that great of a character. In this rare case, it might actually look like Puss might be a better standalone character than a sidekick.

On a side-note, I wonder if we’ll see a Shrek/Donkey cameo. I know it’s a prequel but they could still just be passing by in the background or something.

  10. This film look dumb, man. I not pay to see it. How a supporting character from Shrek be main star. I don’t like this idea.

  11. I cannot wait to see this movie when it comes out next year ?

    • November 4 of this year.

  12. Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just your
articles? I mean, what you say is fundamental and everything.
But think about if you added some great pictures or videos to give your posts more, “pop”!
Your content is excellent but with images and clips, this site
could definitely be one of the most beneficial in its niche.
    Wonderful blog!
