Recently, Antonio Banderas revealed that the Puss in Boots spin-off to the Shrek franchise would be a fully fledged origin story, telling the tales of the feisty feline right from a young age and, obviously, before we first saw him in Shrek 2. And even though in lieu of that information, the following is quite obvious, this now officially confirms it: Puss in Boots will not feature any of the characters from the Shrek series, other than Puss, that is!
“[It will feature] all new characters – except Puss… ‘It doesn’t overlap with Shrek at all. Partly that was done to tell an original Puss story, but partly because we didn’t know what Shrek 4 (and now Shrek 5) were going to do with the characters and we couldn’t write conflicting storylines.”
Although a big part of the reason they’re not having any of Shrek’s characters in Puss in Boots is not to mess with anything that’ll be going on in further installments of the main franchise, it’s nonetheless good to hear they’re not going to rely on past characters for laughs.
The other pesky problem is the possibility that Puss in Boots might be dependent on pop culture references which, as we all know, plague the Shrek movies… but it looks like they’ve thought of that, too! When Banderas spoke about the character, he mentioned that it goes away from that pop culture stuff, so I guess we can count the Puss in Boots movie as a lot more original than we first thought.
My interest level in Puss in Boots has gone up a couple of notches, I must admit.
Are you glad the Puss in Boots spin-off won’t feature any of the Shrek series’ characters, and will be without a plethora of pop culture references? Does this make you look forward to the movie anymore?
Puss in Boots is scheduled to be released on March 30th, 2012.
