While pretty much everyone loves Shrek’s incarnation of Puss in Boots (as voiced by Antonio Banderas) it’s hard to not be skeptical about the idea of the character headlining his own spinoff – especially since the Shrek movie franchise seemingly ran out of gas, even before last year’s final installment.

However, the full-length Puss in Boots trailer suggested the character’s solo adventure could be the sort of colorful and fun family-friendly flick that even grown-ups should get a few chuckles out of. The second theatrical preview, thankfully, only supports that idea.

There are definitely traces of Shrek DNA in the Puss in Boots footage glimpsed so far – not to mention, the quality of animation in the DreamWorks’ title remains a notch below that of its biggest “competitor,” Pixar. All the same, Puss in Boots looks like a silly but enjoyable fantasy adventure that features a very charismatic (feline) lead. That’s not to mention, the movie doesn’t look to go to the insufferable extremes that the Shrek franchise eventually did – as far as throwing in too many hip jokes and pop cult references to “entertain” adult moviegoers goes.

But enough of that – check out the second Puss in Boots trailer (via MSN) below:

In case you were wondering, here is the official synopsis for Puss in Boots:

Way before Puss ever met Shrek, our suave and furry feline hero goes on a swashbuckling ride, as he teams with mastermind Humpty Dumpty and the street-savvy Kitty to steal the famed Goose that lays the Golden Eggs.

The Puss in Boots vocal cast includes Banderas as the title character, Salma Hayek (Desperado) as Kitty, Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover) as Humpty Dumpty, Billy Bob Thornton (Bad Santa) as Jack and Amy Sedaris (Strangers with Candy) as Jill – along with Walter Dohrn (Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek Forever After) as the narrator. All of these folk are generally recognized for having expressive voices, so their involvement with this film reads as being a good (enough) thing.

Sidenote – did anyone else wonder if the bit in this Puss in Boots trailer where Puss cuts off a bar thug’s pants was an intentional homage to the risque “dress-slicing scene” from the Banderas-starring Mask of Zorro? Just wondering… icon wink Puss in Boots Trailer #2: A Colorful Spin On The Shrek Franchise

Puss in Boots will open in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters around the U.S. on October 28th, 2011.
