Short version: Whether you enjoy Punisher: War Zone or not will depend completely on what you’re looking to get out of it.

Screen Rant reviews Punisher: War Zone
So… there are two approaches I take to reviewing movies here at Screen Rant. Sometimes I review movies from a more “overall” perspective – generally speaking, and compared to most other movies out there, is it a good movie or a bad one overall?
Then I have what I call a “context review.” This is where I decide whether to basically adjust the bell curve and review a movie from more of a niche perspective. In other words, does it accomplish what it sets out to do within the context of its genre?

Examples of this would be movies I’ve given 4+ star reviews to like The Signal and Shoot ‘em Up, and even movies I’ve given 5 out of 5 stars to like Kung Fu Hustle.
Were these movies perfect? Oscar-worthy? Of course not. Did they deliver what they promised within their respective genres? Absolutely.
So the question is: On which side of the fence does Punisher: War Zone fall? Based on what I’d heard prior to seeing the film I would have to say I’d have to review it in the latter category. But even using that criteria, some films fail miserably.
This film has suffered through probably the MOST controversy throughout its production of any movie we’ve covered here at Screen Rant – yet I kept an open mind going in.
Enough of that, right? What’s the verdict?
Punisher: War Zone was fun.
At least as much fun as an R-rated, bloody, violent as hell movie about a vigilante can be.
This version of the Punisher is a clean-slate restart of the movie version of the character – it assumes there has never been a Punisher movie prior to this one. During the opening credits (which were really cool, btw) we learn that a mob boss who was on trial has been set free due to a mistrial – the judge presiding over the case was murdered. Cut to a fancy mansion with cars arriving where we meet Billy Russoti (soon to become Jigsaw) and from the first moment we see him his brutal personality is made clear. As it turns out he’s an extremely vain SOB, making his soon to be fate that much more meaningful.
It doesn’t take long for the first action scene to arrive, and it’s a doozy. The violence and gore in this first scene, while not played for laughs, is so over the top that I found myself laughing out loud – in a good way. Who knew that watching a bunch of bad guys getting shot, stabbed, skewered and beaten could be so much fun?
We also see that the NYPD is on Frank Castle’s (the Punisher’s real name) side. They go through the motions of having a “task force” (of one apparently inept guy) trying to hunt him down – but really they’re glad to have his help.
While trying to track down and go after Billy, Castle accidently kills an undercover FBI agent and he takes it extremely hard. BTW, this is where Russoti turns into Jigsaw and all I can say about how it happens is, DAMN…
Having lost his own wife and two children in violence, attending the funeral of the agent and seeing the surviving wife and young daughter causes Castle to decide to hang it up. The fellow who supplies him with weapons convinces him that Jigsaw will be going after the wife and daughter, so Castle says fine, but this will be his last job.
In the meantime Jigsaw breaks his apparently insane, homicidal maniac brother James out of a mental institution in order to help exact revenge and kill the Punisher. This guy was played by Doug Hutchison and I thought his performance was one of the worst things about the movie. It was pretty cheesy and goofy in my opinion. I actually liked Dominic West as Jigsaw (moreso when he still had his own face). He played the character as “hard core” New Yorker – I half expected him to throw in a “mook” or “palooka” at some point, but it worked for me.
And Ray Stevenson as Frank Castle? I thought he nailed it. No disrespect to Thomas Jane, but I never bought him as the Punisher. Stevenson on the other hand – never doubted him as the character for a second.
As to the violence in the film – holy cow. Earlier rumors of a possible PG-13 for this? Give me a break. Doubts about Lexi Alexander doing justice to the kill scenes because she’s a woman? Leave those at the door. Punisher: War Zone is at its best when it’s delivering its particular brand of over the top, 1980s movie style violence. This is gun action/violence as it should be: bloody and gory as hell.
So why all the bad reviews? I think people are judging this from an “overall” point of view instead of a “niche” view. You see this isn’t Iron Man or The Dark Knight… this is (as Massawyrm at AICN pointed out) a comic book movie that knows it’s a comic book movie. It’s not shooting for a serious, real-world take as much as other movies are in the current superhero movie trend. The action is over the top – sometimes to the point that it makes you laugh, but in that put-a-grin-on-your-face “that was AWESOME!” kind of way.
It’s no cinematic tour de force – no Oscars will be given here. Most of the acting is mediocre, some outright bad. There’s cheesy dialog and some silly characters (a free-running Rastafarian-looking black guy with a Brit/Irish accent for one), but when Frank Castle is doing what he does best, you’ll forget all that and revel in the awesomeness of seeing scores of bad guys get what’s coming in a ton of creative ways. Oh, and the beat-down the two main baddies get at the end are among the most satisfying “bad guy finally gets what’s coming to him” scenes I’ve seen in a film in recent memory.
So, if you go into this looking for a good time I think you’ll come out pretty satisfied. Go into this expecting a “good” movie and you’ll end up laughing at it, not with it.

Mendoza Line I mean
Lionsgate can never get anything right, lol. That might have helped the film for me though, I went in there knowing it was a Lionsgate movie…
Everyone except Ray Stevenson was pretty bad. But that was all I went to see it for, to see Stevenson mow down as many bad guys as they can squeeze into one film…
You know, this film doing bad can mean good or bad things. Good is that the license might be sold out and Marvel will eat it up so they can make their own Punisher film in the future, bad in that they might go with a different actor for Punisher. Although I can’t think of anyone who would look as good for the role than Stevenson. There just aren’t enough actors with the right look who have the physical size to play the role. Tom Jane was much too small, looks more like a marathon runner than The Punisher…
I doubt it Ken, Punisher is dead if this film bombs.
Its a two time loser,,, especially when the fans even recognise it for being entertaining only as a long as you know what you stepping in…
Direct to dvd would have been a smart move…
This franchise is done theatrically.
Leave it to Lionsgate, lol.
But anyway, it’s only dead if no company is willing to spend the money on it. But this is MARVEL we’re talking about. They are not just some company looking for licenses to make money, they are where the comics came from, so they have a reason to want to make a Punisher movie more than just to profit. Of course to profit is the goal, but I’m sure if they are confident in their ability to make a good reboot that will get attention, all the while finally getting a good representation of one of their comics on film, they will do it. Look at Hulk. I know it’s not the same since it only failed once, but they can have the same reasoning with this one. A lot of people didn’t have confidence in the idea of another Hulk film, but due to good advertising and having a good actor in the starring role, Marvel was able to win confidence. Not to mention, the ones who were not won over by the advertising would have been won over by word of mouth once people watch it and saw that it was good. The same could happen if they make a better Punisher film. And seeing what Marvel has done so far, they will not get Lionsgate to produce it, so it WILL be better, lol. I just hope whatever happens, they keep the same actor. I hope Routhe staying as Superman will set a precedent.
What marvel might do is crossover Punisher with one of its already established film properies Like Spider Man and then from that Spider Man apperance Spinoff the Punisher into his own franchise again.
Didnt the Punisher premiere in Spider Man 129?
This might be a good idea after all.
So let me get this straight Ken, do you think Punisher is better than Ghost Rider? (?)
Cause Ghost Rider’s got a better chance at a sequel at this point. Marvel’s got too much on their plate as it is,,,
You might get another Punisher in 10 years,,,
Um, considering that I thought Ghost Rider was not only bad as a movie in terms of acting/script/story/etc. but also lacked in any kind of guilty pleasures at all… At least this one had a protagonist I can identify with, not some idiot that sold his soul and rides around with a flaming skull, and handles weapons well, and kills every criminal a-hole he encounters. At least that part was enjoyable. I don’t have much respect for some long-haired motorcycle riding daredevil guy…
I’m glad you put it that way Ken J, because what you thought is only your opinion…
Um, isn’t what anything any of us say our opinions? If I’m not mistaken, right above the comment box it says: “What’s your opinion?”
Yep that’s why yours means nothing,,,,
Rock on Ken J,,,
Yep, welcome to the club 790, lol.
Okay Vic you’re right. I’ll check out The Punisher.
Vic,
Your the man its nice to see that there are still pro’s out there who know how to review like with a un biased to the point review…
and Damn you nailed it. after seeing the “bloody trailers” i was not sure i was going to like this movie and it was going to have a Uwe Boll feel and look to it…
I am glad it is not and i hope to see this movie when i get a chance…
(Now to convince the pregnant wife…)
hmmm….
dang too bad they didn’t bring back Thomas Jane to be Frank Castle again
@ patrick.
dude seriously yeah Jane is good actor ,
but stevenson LOOKs the part .
you ani’t gonna get any closer frank then Ray Stevenson.
This movie wasn’t even a guilty pleasure for me and I will never watch it again. Movie goers have spoken and they unanimously shunned this tripe. Good riddance…hopefully the property will fall back into Marvels capable hands and they can try and revive this dead franchise.
@greenknight
Marvel won’t revive this under their studio banner because they’ve said they’ll never go above a PG-13 rating for their superhero flicks.
Vic
There’s no point in Marvel taking the Punisher license because:
1) They can financially only self-make two features a year for the next 4 years, then they hope to move to 3. Punisher will never be a part of that.
2) As Vic says, Punisher is rated R, that’s not Marvel’s style.
3) Punisher is not even close to an A-list popular character for Marvel and he does not tie into the big planned crossovers (The Avengers or Fox’s X-titles).
I loved Ray Stevenson as Punisher and it’s too bad War Zone is getting owned at the box office because I would love to see more. Maybe we can get some Lionsgate straight-to-DVD followups?
like I said earlier, I really think that taking our those 3 stupid things would of made this film so much better.
Great review.
I thought I’d hate this film, It’s just not my style. I was dragged to it and was surprised by how much I got into it.
I wasn’t bothered by the acting, all that scenery chewing fit and Stevenson was perfect. Lexi wanted to make a big, bloody, over the top, violent comic book flick and that’s what she delivers.
It’s not high art, but I agree, It was fun. I was entertained.
@Vic
Thanks for this indepth review. I believe the style of reviewing movies based on “context” works really well, expecially for the movies you mentioned above (2 out of 3 I own and cherish, and on your advice I will check out The Signal as well). It’s really too bad that some movies don’t get a fighting chance when other reviewers base them on “Oscar Worthiness” or “Artistic Merit” when that is not at all what they are about.
I’m a lot more excited about PWZ now, as I find my views on the films covered on this site are often pretty close to any of the reviewers here. I’ll have to make some time to go see it this week.
Thanks again and keep up the great work! This site has provided me some cool topics to discuss with the guys at work, and I make sure to turn people onto your site whenever I can.
@Andrew Leslie
Thanks, bro. That’s always great to hear. Spread the word about Screen Rant!
Best,
Vic
Patrick, if they had brought back Tom Jane, it would have somehow been even worse. Because then it will have bad acting, bad script, AND a Punisher that doesn’t look like the Punisher… At least with the way it is now, everything is bad, except we have a kick ass main character.
I liked the first Punisher movie but it had too much story for me. The new one had lots of over the top killings that rocked. The acting wasn’t as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Sure its not the best but come on.. the only actor that has to do a good job when it comes to killing lots of bad guys is the Punisher. I will buy this one and add it with the other comic book movies I own.
I enjoyed the movie, but come on, the acting by everyone except Stevenson was pretty bad…
i didnt find acting a problem at all except for the two policemen helping the punisher.
thats an overexaggerated complaint
Thanks for the review Vic. I plan on seeing it Wednesday night.
Your review was exactly the same as I’ve been telling folks.
It was AWESOME. SO many ways to kill someone. Ray did a fantastic job IMO. One of the things that is important in me liking a film for the story is caring about the characters and I actually cared about them here (using a child always helps).
Yes, the LBJ and Jigsaw chars nailed it home that this was a comic book film, but otherwise, it seemed like a good old-fashioned JCVD
This movie was by far the BEST Punisher film. It was a comic film done the way a comic film should be done, it brought me somewhere filled with death, guns and cool visuals. Excellent! The acting was OK, not too bad, but no one did extremely well. The only problem I had with the film was the fact that Jigsaw was a supposed mob boss, but he put in alot of footsoldier work. I didn’t mind it, just didn’t make me believe the realism, but his face getting stitched was realistic(?) Anyway, I do not recommend this for the weak of heart, but in my view its waaay better than just about any other comic film, save the Dark Knight (damn I love that movie)
Well, the FBI agent wasn’t that bad, but Soap was horrible. LBJ was HORRIBLY HORRIBLE, or terribly terrible, either one, lol. And Jigsaw was just kind of annoying, and it was more the lines he was meant to say that were bad than his actual acting of it. But still not exactly a great performance either way. Microchip was pretty bad too, but at least it looked like he was trying to take it seriously unlike most of the other cast members. Ray Stevenson was the only one that both seemed like he was trying to take the role seriously and performed it alright. Some of his lines were kind of corny, but it’s not like he wrote it. He still delivered them in a serious manner and didn’t seem “goofy” about it like everyone else did. I don’t know, I felt like Stevenson was playing in a different movie than everyone else. He was acting in a serious ultra-violent action film with some drama while everyone else thought they were in a campy goody action/comedy…
