Though three different actors have played The Punisher on the big screen, Jon Bernthal’s take on the character for the Netflix side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is fast becoming the definitive version of Frank Castle. After wowing fans and directors alike with his turns on The Walking Dead and Fury, Bernthal impressed Marvel diehards with his faithful take on the classic anti-hero when he debuted in season 2 of Daredevil earlier this year. His embodiment of the character proved so popular, that a solo series was announced just a few short months after the entire season dropped on the streaming giant, and the supporting cast is already growing.
Photos have started popping up online showing the filming of the new series, but the past year has also proven that Bernthal is keen to take part in showing off some behind-the-scenes looks at his evolution as the vigilante. Even before filming started for season 2 of Daredevil, Bernthal regularly dropped photos on social media of himself boning up on some comic book lore. His dedication to the character and his history won over many fans before they’d even seen him in action on the streets of Hell’s Kitchen.
Fans of Bernthal and Punisher will be pleased to see that the actor isn’t letting up anytime soon. Referencing an inside joke from the Mark Waid run of Daredevil in the pages of Marvel Comics, artist Mitch Gerads took to his Twitter to show off a photo of Jon Bernthal wearing an “I’m Not Daredevil” shirt in his home recently.
The image compares Bernthal in the shirt to a Punisher comic book cover by Gerads himself where the character dons the article of clothing. Just scrolling through the replies to the tweet will give you an idea of how excited this sight makes fans of both Punisher and the actor. Within the pages of Daredevil, the shirt was a way for the recently outed Matt Murdock to sarcastically downplay the reveal of his secret identity. Taking the eccentricity of Waid’s Murdock and applying it to the grim Punisher is a great way to show off Castle’s darker sense of humor, while also referencing the two character’s shared history.
With filming for Marvel’s The Punisher underway, we’re likely to get more more shots like this as Bernthal dives deeper into the history of his character. And though it’s unlikely that the shirt will show up on Frank in the show, the appearance of it will still give fans something to dream about. Would just a flash of it on his floor as he gets ready or the use of it to wipe some blood off his face be too much to ask? Luckily, we won’t have to wait too long to find out, as the spinoff series is set to debut sometime next year, along with Iron Fist and The Defenders. Until then, keep your eyes on social media for more great moments like this.
Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, and Luke Cage season 1 are now available on Netflix. Iron Fist will premiere on March 17, 2017, with The Defenders and The Punisher arriving later that year. Premiere dates for the next seasons of Jessica Jones season 2 and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.
