A new featurette for Michael Mann’s upcoming Depression-era crime-drama, Public Enemies, debuted this week (inappropriately enough) during the 2009 MTV Movie Awards.
The featurette…um, features Public Enemies stars Christian Bale and Johnny Depp, as well as Mann himself, all discussing the era of The Great Depression and John Dillinger’s status as less of a criminal than a bonafide American celebrity. Most of the footage is lifted right from the Public Enemies trailer, but there are some new clips and the interviews with cast and director are pretty interesting.

Check out the behind-the-scenes featurette for Public Enemies:
I have nothing less than supreme confidence that this film is going to ROCK. I’m already a pretty big Michael Mann fan (it rhymes so you know it’s real) and I even like his less-appreciated films, such as Miami Vice (that’s right, I said I like Miami Vice. Deal with it). Do I need to even argue that Johnny Depp and Christian Bale under one marquee is an awesome thing? I would think that by now it would be universally acknowledged that Public Enemies has the best pairing of quality actors since Bale and Heath Ledger faced off in The Dark Knight last summer.
For anyone who has a hard time distinguishing good films from bad ones: just listen to what Bale, Depp and Mann talk about in that video – their shared understanding of what John Dillinger meant for America at the time of The Great Depression, as well as the kind of icon he’s become today. These are serious filmmakers who grab hold of their films with both hands – much to the benefit of us, the audience. Can’t wait for the mindless summer season to get an injection of Oscar-level quality.
Public Enemies steals into theaters on July 1, 2009. Let us know what you thought of the featurette.

Well I guess it’ll be somewhat of an AWESOME MOVIE!
Im really looking forward to this movie both heat and collateral are great films and i think this will be to with another soled cast
Miami Vice, Really?
I’m looking forward to this, but I’m really iffy on it. I mean It looks excellent in fact the trailers make it looks so great that I actually like Depp in this. However, Mann has produced mostly crap in my opinion. I think the guy puts out some of the biggest garbage in film. This looks like a smart film which is odd coming from a guy who mikes mindless explosions. I”m also not a fan of Depp all of his roles look pretty much exactly the same and I’ve never really seen him give an original performance until this trailer at least. It’s like nothing he has done before and for the first time ever I found my self thinking he’s actually a good actor. Not to mention he took part in raping the best musical ever written with Sweeny Todd.
Daniel F,
We were friends up until today, man. You broke my heart. Depp and Mann are great
Heat
Manhunter
Collateral
All great films.
Depp is one of the top actors of his generation.
i cant stand mann hes just barely above Bay for me. As far as Depp goes i cant think of a more over ratex actor. I’ve i liked a grand total of like two movies by him. He destroyed sweeny todd and willie wonka not to mention those god awful pirate films and its kind of me to call them that.
Woah.
My anticipation for this film just went up another notch, I’m past 12 already.
After seeing the trailer a couple of times at the cinema, I really can see what Rob Keyes meant when he said previously that the digital cameras don’t work on this type of movie.
You can really tell it’s not shot using film (it’s a lot more noticable on the big screen), and it almost looks like a DVD featurette in places… it really cheapens what should look nice and classy.
I used to love Mann’s cinematography on stuff like Manhunter and Heat, and the digital video did look good on Collateral for some reason… but it just doesn’t suit this type of film.
Other than that… I am looking forward to it
I don’t know to me the digital seems fine. To be honest in most cases I actually prefer digital. I mean granted film looks better theses days than it did 20 years ago, but it still doesn’t compare to digital in my opinion. I can’t watch most films before the 90’s because the film quality is just so awful even remastered they still don’t look that great. There are exceptions as far as movies I still like despite the terrible film quality, but not many. Anything with Mel Brooks or most Hitchcock. While I’m not a huge fan of Star Wars remastered it still holds up fairly well.
Daniel F, how can you say that about Mann?
“Just barely above Bay” come on dude, thats blasphemy! Please do not put Mann next to Bay, now you made me cry.
Kofi, Im with you homey! Mann rules, and Miami Vice rules! I say it all the time, everyone was expecting something like Bad Boys but what Mann decided to do was show the true nature of going undercover, excellent!
The last sequence with Farrell having Gong Li be taken off, with Foxx in the hospital for his girl with Autorock playing is the best sequence I have seen in film so far that is not only cool but tells a whole lot about the subject and nature of the film. And with no dialogue as well!
Johnny Depp is the best actor of our time, and he is different in every movie. Plus, his choices remain outside the mainstream and always interesting. I know a lot about Dillinger, having grown up in Chicago, and I hope the movie sticks as close to the facts as possible. Purvis was no hero, as the press liked to make him, and Dillinger’s rise and fall was one of the first real celebrity rides to hit the American consciousness in an age of fast cars, faster guns and sensationalized journalism.
I trust Johnny to live up to the role and take it where no one else could. If Johnny signed up with Mann, he will no doubt produce an entertaining and informative picture.
I can’t wait!
This looks to be dynamite! I read the very think non-fiction study PUBLIC ENEMIES that this is derived from, and the story is bigger and even more amazing. This looks great.
thick, not think. Excuse me.
Barb Nessinger I’m sorry, but even if you are a Depp fan your comments are ridiculous. He makes choices out side of the mainstream ? Have you seen Pirates? You know that movie he did that made hundreds of millions of Dollars that has Disney plastered all over it and has 3 movies ? Also wheather you like his performances or not most of the characters are almost exactly the same. He always plays an extremely strange character with all kinds of crazy ass quirks. I get that dillanger is a bank robber, but he’s a fairly normal person as far as personality goes not an extreme eccentric. Which is new for Depp.
OMG!!!! I’ve been sooooo looking forward to this one! It looks amazing.
I have yet to see a film where Johnny Depp wasn’t wonderful!
I recomend you watch Willie Wonka and Sweeny Todd than. He ruined both of those films and while I won’t judge his performance specifically if you just want to watch some films of poor quality with him in it I suggest all the Pirates films.
Daniel F, 99.9% of movies are still shot on film, today. And if film looks so bad why do they spend so much time and money trying their best to make DV look like film?
I’m certainly not against stuff shot digitally where appropriate, but for a period piece like this… nah.
And Depp’s great, except for Willy Wonka maybe…
Meh Willie Wonka was bad, but Sweeny Todd was far worse. Burton and Depp tag teamed to destroy one of the greatest musicals of all time.
I mean granted film looks better theses days than it did 20 years ago.
Those were my words. I’m sorry where does that say that film looks bad these days? I didn’t at all say that in fact. I said that Digital looks better and that film looked bad in the 80’s and prior to that. I think Film looks fine these days, but digital is far superior.
charlie and the chocolate factory was great and sweeney todd was f***ing amazing. i don’t know what movies you were watching. Johnny Depp is the best actor i know. same with bale. this movie will rock
also, daniel f, you say johnny depp is the same person in every movie, yet you’ve seen willy wonka and sweeney todd. you can’t say they were anything the same :p
I didn’t say he was the same person the characters are different I said that Depp portrays them the same. He performs them as if they were the exact same person in a new situation.
Also Willie Wonka and Sweeny Todd were destruction of great things that had already been done. Both were jokes when he did them.
Daniel F, I’m sorry but you are off-base here. Depp may be doing eccentric takes in his interpretations of the characters, but they are not “all the same.” Certainly, his Sweeney Todd was especially interesting and his singing a very pleasant surprise!
Watch the actual musical and you’ll see nothing interesting about what Depp did.
I have seen the original Broadway production, which was wonderful, but still stand by what I said.
How does Barney play in to this ? Seriously? That’s not even a good insult. I stand by the fact that Depp has only done two movies that were good three if this turns out to be as good as it looks. Edward Scissor hands was great I’ll give him that much credit. I may like him more if he tries to say away from Tim Burton, Horrible remakes and the Pirates franchise sadly that’s most of his career.
I was just thinking of something random. haha. i’m just a johnny depp fan. sorry. i know you’re entitled to your opinion and i respect that. i didn’t mean to be mean
You were very succesful lol that was about as random as it got. No worries man thanks for being cool in the end.
i am sorry though. i just get all flustered sometimes. lol. i’m glad we’re cool. i also think it’s funny that they took out my comment and it makes yours seem random
i’m also not the psycho that i seem to be, i swear haha
but back to this movie… it’s gonna rock
