It seems like every story about Psych's upcoming 8th season assumes that it will probably be the USA show's last, but show creator Steve Franks keeps saying that he isn't ready to slice the last pineapple, and with a musical episode coming in December, a host of new and familiar guest stars, the addition of an Oscar winner to the cast, and a new teaser trailer, Psych may not be ready to fade away.

In San Diego for their 5th appearance at Comic Con International, team-Psych reportedly goofed off a bit while also delivering  a few tidbits about the now 10 episode long 8th season.

For starters, the winner of the vote that asked fans to select one of three prospective stories was announced and the "Dream Therapy" entry took the prize.

Directed by star James Roday, the Dream Therapy episode is called “A Nightmare on State Street,” and it will feature Gus as he "undergoes dream therapy to understand the cause of his night terrors. But when he’s done with the treatment, everything’s a little… off."

Psych - James Roday and Dule Hill

Known for their ability to execute high concept episodes like last season's Clue-inspired 100th episode and tributes to Twin Peaks, Hitchcock, and the like, Psych's 8th season will also see a redo of one of their old episodes, film a Harry Potter/Guy Ritchie inspired episode (featuring the return of Cary Elwes' Despereaux, Olivia D'Abo, and Vinnie Jones), on top of the previously mentioned musical, which will premiere on December 15th.

Here's a brief synopsis for "Psych: The Musical":

Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dulé Hill) attempt to track down an escaped playwright madman, played by Anthony Rapp. Once their investigation hits a snag, however, Shawn and Gus are forced to consult with the one person Z confided in while in the institution … a dangerous and familiar villain from Shawn’s past.

Following the panel at SDCC, Franks and show stars James Roday and Dule Hill joined TV Line for an interview where Franks addressed the show's future:

We want to keep doing this forever and ever till we're 93, 94 [...] We're goona take it as long as it will go, as long as we're allowed to go, and we're goona ride this horse till it dies and then we're goona grab the reigns and we're goona drag it.

With filming for season 8 now half way done, Roday was asked about having enough time to bring the show to a right conclusion when the time comes.

I think we're all pretty confident that, after such a long haul, that the network will do us right and give us the opportunity to send ourselves and the fans out properly.

As for the partial departure of show co-star Maggie Lawson, aka Roday's on-screen love interest, Juliet O'Hara and the addition of Mira Sorvino to the show, Roday was clear that Sorvino was not replacing Lawson, saying that Sorvino's character was a "Brand new character, completely different energy, different everything."

So, with all of this stuffed into a 10 episode season, the question has to be asked: despite Franks' desires to keep going, is he trying to take Psych out with a bang, or loudly state the show's case for renewal? We won't know for quite some time about the future of the show, but at least Psych-Os can take heart in the knowledge that with Franks and the show's stars seemingly not ready to throw in the towel, half the battle is already fought.
