Following the original show’s cancellation back in 2014, Pysch: The Movie continues to pick up steam by casting Chuck star Zachary Levi as its main villain. Originally created for the USA Network by Steve Franks in 2006, the original detective comedy series Psych followed the chief exploits of pseudo-psychic and crime consultant Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his faithful side-kick and best friend, Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill).

Over the course of eight seasons, Shawn and Gus aided the Santa Barbara Police Department in solving a series of particularly puzzling crimes, aided by Shawn’s superior instincts (which were masked as seemingly-paranormal abilities). Going on some ten-plus years, the show has remained a hit with its core fanbase – who are sometimes lovingly referred to as “Psych-O’s” – and the latest word has production steadily moving forward on Psych: The Movie.

According to Deadline, Levi has just been cast as the central antagonist in the upcoming two-hour made-for-TV Psych movie directed by Franks and based on a script that he cowrote with Roday. Levi will be playing the role of the Thin White Duke, a nefarious villain who decides to target one of Shawn’s closest compatriots and friends. The movie will also feature supporting turns from Roday, Hill, Timothy Omundson, Maggie Lawson, Corbin Bernsen and Kirsten Nelson.

James Roday and Dule Hill in Psych Pysch: The Movie Casts Zachary Levi As Its Villain

Based on his past experience as a lead actor in the like-minded TV comedy series Chuck, Levi should be able to fit into the surrounding Psych: The Movie, as the series has always been well known for its light-hearted humor and saitrical bent. Only time will tell whether or not Franks will manage to please longtime fans of the hit USA Network show, but here’s to hoping for the best in the meantime.

Over the course of eight seasons on the air, Franks, Roday, and Hill helped to make Psych into a compelling comedy series that saw fit to offer viewers who might have been turned off by the more dour offerings of such like-minded programs as Criminal Minds a more light-hearted take on the police procedural. Keeping that in mind, Psych: The Movie should provide for more of the same later this December.
