‘Psych’ Gets Canceled – But Will It Return as a TV Movie?

Published 1 year ago by , Updated February 6th, 2014 at 6:54 am,

Bad news, Psych-Os. USA’s long-running psychic detective dramedy, Psych, will come to an end following season 8 – the current season – with the series finale set to air on March 26th. That final episode will be followed by a live, one-hour cast and crew Q&A, but that may come as little comfort to fans of the show who were hoping season 9 was on the horizon.

The announcement came from James Roday and Dule Hill – the stars of the show – via video message (above). The playful and grateful tone makes it sound as if series creator Steve Franks and his cast and crew just decided that it was time to walk off into the sunset, with Roday telling an upset Hill:

“We all came together in a big group, we said we wanted to go out on top. We wanted to Elway and T. Davis it.”

However, according to EW, Franks and company haven’t had this news for long. Nevertheless, they had an “inkling” that it was going to happen, which means that the finale will have a proper air of finality to it. Which is good, because in the absence of that, USA’s offices might have been inundated by pineapples and angry tweets from the show’s impressively plugged-in fan base.

Roday – who’s aware of the dedicated and vocal fans and the show’s long run for USA -  spoke to TV Line about the possibility of a proper send-off back in July while promoting the show’s upcoming season and the musical episode that ran in December.

“I think we’re all pretty confident that, after such a long haul, the network will do us right and give us the opportunity to send ourselves and the fans out properly.”

Is the upcoming series finale going to be proper enough? Perhaps it won’t have to be, at least according to USA Network President Chris McCumber, who said:

“ ‘Psych’ has made an indelible imprint on the television landscape, with a unique brand of comedy. [...] The final season celebrates the iconic characters that have made this show so beloved, and will be an exclamation point on the series’ incredible run. And while the series will wrap in March, somehow I don’t believe we’ve heard the last of Shawn and Gus.”

Clearly, he is referring to an old timey radio play. No? That only leaves a few more practical options for Shawn Spencer and Burton Guster, a.k.a. MC Clap Yo Handz.

Spin-off? While it might be interesting to see Steve Franks pull a Vince Gilligan and try to succeed where Baywatch Nights, The Golden Palace, and Saved by the Bell: The College Years failed, Psych relies too heavily on its entire ensemble for fans to go along with a setting change or some other device that would greatly alter the show. Shawn and Gus are the hook, but is this the same show without Lassie, O’Hara, or Henry? Doubtful.

That would seem to leave a TV movie as the most likely option. Psych has often demonstrated a flare for the epic, be it their Clue-themed 100th episode, the Twin Peaks episode, or the musical; and with USA airing a Burn Notice TV movie before that show’s end and with one-time speculation about a Monk TV movie, it’s not like the suggestion is that far-fetched. In fact, this might be the best option for Psych fans (apart from, you know, another full season) since one TV movie could certainly turn into a series of them (like Murder, She Wrote or Jesse Stone) if the Psych-O machine does what it does best each time out.

So, what do you think: is a possible future return enough to dull the pain of hearing about Psych‘s impending finale?

  1. I work in the tv business in the town that this was shot in. That Psych was cancelled has been known FOR MONTHS. I’m surprised it’s even a thing. The Set Dec sale for all of the props, set dec and wardrobe of this show was last year.

  2. Psych has been my favourite show since season 3 (when I discovered it) and I’ve watched each episode at least 5 times. Honestly I’m having quite a bit of trouble getting used to the fact that it’s ending. I mean a world without Psych? I can’t imagine anything more depressing. If there is a tv movie it could be the light at the end of the tunnel that I need to see…

  3. Psych/Monk crossover movie!

    • Psych+Monk=Delicious Flavor

  4. A spin off which teams up shawn, gus and Monk

  5. I think that the producers of psych should do like what the producers of the MythBusters, a television series by the discovery channel, did and make more seasons. The MythBusters TV show has gone on for 13 seasons I believe. I would rather fall in love with a vegan than to see psych be discontinued :C

  6. Lol at everyone here working in the TV industry. Yet they decide to use the comments section of screen rant to spread their knowledge? Come on lmfao.

  7. Oprhah is the truth and that is final.
