We’ve turned a corner and are headed down the final stretch (re: one more month to go) before the theatrical premiere of Sir Ridley Scott’s new addition to the Alien franchise, a prequel/spinoff titled Prometheus. Despite having seen some fairly revealing footage – and read commentary from the cast and crew about the film’s high-minded sci-fi themes, there’s still a good deal of secrecy being retained around this project.
In many regards, the mystery surrounding Scott’s film – which sees him return to the sci-fi/horror sub-genre that he lay the foundation for, with the original Alien back in 1979 – remains as thickly layered as that surrounding this summer’s third (and final) major tentpole release, The Dark Knight Rises.
Judging by today’s batch of new Prometheus images, it seems the extended international trailer could mark the event horizon (reference intended) as far as material offering additional insight on Scott’s project goes. There are no Alien “easter eggs” in the background of these pics; just the attractive cast, dressed and at work in their astronaut duds on the Prometheus set. Most of these images are either just promo stills shot in a studio setting – or just miscellaneous behind-the-scenes photos from the overseas portion of production.
That said: we doubt anybody’s going to complain about photos that avoid divulging any more of Prometheus‘ secrets – nor ones that feature people like Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace dressed in body-tight spacesuits.
With R-Rated subject matter, contemporary blockbuster production values and 3D technology at his disposal, Scott is poised to meet moviegoers’ heavy expectations for Prometheus head on. So long as he and his collaborators are able to (at least, partially) recreate the disturbing atmosphere and unnerving subtext of Alien – and not just deliver a bland product that’s more dazzling to the eyes, but lacks its predecessor’s substance – we should be in for a real treat.
Prometheus lands in theaters (2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D) around the U.S. on June 8th, 2012.
