‘Project X’ Sequel will Continue the Party

Project X Sequel Project X Sequel will Continue the Party

Opinion about the found-footage party film Project X is so divisive that it nearly tore apart our Screen Rant Underground podcast team. One look at the film’s Rotten Tomatoes scores further evidences a sharp divide between critics who detested the movie (read our scathing review) and average movie goers who enjoyed it for what it was: a crazy party caught on film.

But studios measure success squarely in dollars and cents, and after Project X‘s $20 million opening weekend, Warner Bros. has determined that a sequel is worth making.

THR has the exclusive that WB is moving ahead with a Project X sequel; the studio has already tapped the writers of the first film, Michael Bacall (21 Jump Street) and Matt Drake, to work on a treatment for the second film. Producer Todd Phillips will be the one responsible for deciding if that treatment is good enough to move on to the scripting stage.

No word yet on WB’s plans for bringing the Project X cast back (or not). THR couldn’t confirm whether or not the starring trio – Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper and Jonathan Daniel Brown – have option deals in place for a sequel, but considering that they were virtual unknowns before the film, they don’t exactly have a whole lot of leverage when it comes to negotiating a bigger salary for a second go-round.

Bring back the original cast? Or bring new faces to the party?

Also in question is whether a sequel film would follow in the found-footage format of its predecessor. The smart money is on WB continuing with found-footage, as it is cheap to produce and has the potential to net a wide profit margin. Whether movie fans will still be open to the format (which is not without some inherent problems) remains to be seen, as found-footage has been in danger of being overused lately, thanks to 2012 films like Chronicle (a good use of the format) and The Devil Inside (a terrible use of the format).

Personally, I think the studio would be smart to go with a new cast of fresh-face actors and a new story about a different crazy high school party. The characters of the first film were an issue for many viewers (particularly Cooper’s foul-mouthed hype man, Costa), and weren’t particularly beloved or memorable. Furthermore, Project X was about the party┬ámore so than the lives or emotions of the characters; so long as the event itself stays at the center of this of event film franchise, we’re fairly certain that people wouldn’t miss the original cast all that much.

We’ll keep you updated about the status of the Project X sequel.

  1. I think it should start off with thomas coming home from jail and costa throws him a welcome home party

  2. I would love to get a audition if new faces is what there going for I been told by many that acting I should pursue

  3. Keep the trio
to the Break of Dawn, yo!

  4. It be funny if the threw a party at the high school……that would be fun to watch….n u got to change cast….but i love costa

    • To The Break of Don Yo

  5. It would be a horrendous mistake to change the cast. The next party should be their high school graduation party.

  6. in the movie they mentioned a party that they werent invited to. “even the guy in the wheelchair got a hand job” Maybe that party was epic also

  7. old faces :D because at the end of project x costa says to the woman ” I’ll invite you to my next party”

  8. If there is tryouts for the next movie i would love to try out and want information on how to go about that. I loved the movie and have been told i should try out for a comedy.

  9. I think that they should have the same cast! We all love them and it was pretty amazing! They should have a WELCOME BACK party! Also showing Oliver Cooper’s children and Thomas Mann’s relationship with the girl.

  10. New Faces, but maybe a guest appearance of the old trio?

    Hell yesss!

  11. The party would not be the same if the cast did not come back, if there not coming back then dont name it project x 2 because it would be stupid if its not the same characters!

  12. It has to be the same cast or the movie will not be the same!

  13. Personally, I think thee should keep the trio for Project x 2!! Each character perfectly balanced out each other, and it would be a mistake to go with a new cast. Also, Costa implies he will be having another party at the end of Project x, so you can’t really go with anyone else

  14. Thomas Costa n Jb……….
Without This trio is No project X..
we WAnt Only them in The Sequel…

  15. To brEak The dAwn Yoo..!!

Only with costa Thomas n Jb……
please dont add new cast to the sequel….

the trio[ thomas , costa n jb] iS the beSt..

  16. Of course it needs to be the same cast it would be stupid to change them, and it wasnt just about a party, it was about changing the game for these high school losers and personally loved costa character, he was awesome! Project X 2 should deffinetly be costa birthday party, but how they are going to be able to top the first one going to be difficult. I just hope it dosent turn out like hangover 2 – same story different setting as that was an awful sequel.

  17. We need the original cast back and set the party as a university

  18. maybe it should start off with some kids seeing the party on the news and just deciding to throw one themselves…. this would involve new cast but could have cameos of the old cast coming to the party

  19. People wouldn’t miss the original cast?! Are you kidding! Yes we would. It wouldn’t be project X if you don’t bring back the old cast. I love cooper’s foul mouth. If you don’t bring back the old cast then don’t bother bringing the movie back.

  20. They should keep the current cast. Costa is a beast. They couldn’t have done the party without him. Thomas is just legit, and the fat ass whale is funny. Keep the original cast.

  21. i think they should all go to a college that doesnt party n they change the school much like van wilder but if it aint done right then it will be retarded

  22. im in between, i do want to see new faces but at the same time i want the trio back!! or maybe get new people and costa finds out about the party and they all go!? i want to see Dave Franco as the main guy..

  23. me parese que tendrian que hacer la secuela por que costa al final de la pelicula dece “a y recuerda traer algo ajustado” la tienen que hacerrr y saben que casii todo el mundo la vera es muy buena

  24. Would love to Audition for this movie! Im a great Actor been in Plays back in my whole Highschool Career!

  25. I want to be apart of this next film!!!!! I fell in love with the first film and they should add new faces!!! PLEASE CONTACT ME!!!!! I’ll do anything.

  26. I have two ideas. For one, have Costa find out all three of the paternity tests are found to be his kids and right before they are born have one last party which goes a little wild. Or if any of them can get into a college have them throw parties that are lame like they lost their touch and have tons of people come because they hear that they are throwing the party, but it sucks and they are really boring. Then after a while they get back to their old selves (mainly costa) and throw another kick-ass party. But definitely keep the trio.

  27. just go on with the ORIGINAL CAST. Its much better that way. please people will be looking forward to another EXCITING AND FINGER BANGING MOVIE WITH THOSE THREE PARTY LEGENDS. just sayin. TO THE BREAK OF DAWN YO! PLUS I LOVE COSTA.

  28. I personally think they should keep the same cast.

    • Really simple plot. End of summer party, or more likely college. First keep the same team because they balanced each other well and worked well together and there’s no way they can cost much to keep on for movie #2. Second, take it to college. People will discuss and talk about this crazy party, and it was on the news. They would be local celebrities to teens about to graduate. Being legendary when they enter college, everyone would want something huge to begin the year and these guys could do it. Surprise appearance by T-Rick is a definite possibility. The two kid guards going through intense training becoming more hard core. A family of little people looking for revenge? And working with a long distance relationship with Thomas’ new girlfriend. People wanna know, do they still have it in them to party like there is no tomorrow? Gonna need national guard to shut this one down. To the break of dawn!
