‘Project X’ Sequel will Continue the Party

Project X Sequel Project X Sequel will Continue the Party

Opinion about the found-footage party film Project X is so divisive that it nearly tore apart our Screen Rant Underground podcast team. One look at the film’s Rotten Tomatoes scores further evidences a sharp divide between critics who detested the movie (read our scathing review) and average movie goers who enjoyed it for what it was: a crazy party caught on film.

But studios measure success squarely in dollars and cents, and after Project X‘s $20 million opening weekend, Warner Bros. has determined that a sequel is worth making.

THR has the exclusive that WB is moving ahead with a Project X sequel; the studio has already tapped the writers of the first film, Michael Bacall (21 Jump Street) and Matt Drake, to work on a treatment for the second film. Producer Todd Phillips will be the one responsible for deciding if that treatment is good enough to move on to the scripting stage.

No word yet on WB’s plans for bringing the Project X cast back (or not). THR couldn’t confirm whether or not the starring trio – Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper and Jonathan Daniel Brown – have option deals in place for a sequel, but considering that they were virtual unknowns before the film, they don’t exactly have a whole lot of leverage when it comes to negotiating a bigger salary for a second go-round.

Bring back the original cast? Or bring new faces to the party?

Also in question is whether a sequel film would follow in the found-footage format of its predecessor. The smart money is on WB continuing with found-footage, as it is cheap to produce and has the potential to net a wide profit margin. Whether movie fans will still be open to the format (which is not without some inherent problems) remains to be seen, as found-footage has been in danger of being overused lately, thanks to 2012 films like Chronicle (a good use of the format) and The Devil Inside (a terrible use of the format).

Personally, I think the studio would be smart to go with a new cast of fresh-face actors and a new story about a different crazy high school party. The characters of the first film were an issue for many viewers (particularly Cooper’s foul-mouthed hype man, Costa), and weren’t particularly beloved or memorable. Furthermore, Project X was about the party more so than the lives or emotions of the characters; so long as the event itself stays at the center of this of event film franchise, we’re fairly certain that people wouldn’t miss the original cast all that much.

We’ll keep you updated about the status of the Project X sequel.

  1. Unless they shot this film on a shoestring (really, REALLY cheaply) and it’s therefore already “in the black” after a single week, I find it hard to believe they’ve greenlighted a sequel before they even see second weekend box office results.

    • Correct. It’s budget was $12 million, and it has already grossed $28 million domestically. It is a big money maker for WB.

      • i agree bring the characters back bring the birthday boy back just getting out of jail and them throwing him a bigger better welcome back party

    • F..k off Vic go beat of to kiddy porn your like 60.

  2. Loved the movie, bring on the sequel, with the same characters.

  3. saw the movie regardless of what the critics said and I thought it was a great movie…correction…an epic party!!!… not sure if they can out do this party though…

  4. I’m pretty sure all those kids would be in jail or juvy for all the damage they caused…

  5. people were actually entertained by this. I’m shocked.

  6. Wouldn’t be surprised if the studio filmed the sequel along with the first film. I can easily see the sequel being shown through the perspective of other party goers, hopefully female ones ;)

    • That would be pretty cool!

  7. I haven’t watched Project X but still will watch it despite it getting negavtive reviews because this movie is a teenager movie.

I am 18 years old so.

If Project X gets a sequel, my idea for the sequel would be having superpowers involed.

Kind of like Chrolince meets bad teenagers in a wild party.

Have to be honset when I watched some parts of the Project X trailer like the flamethrowing part and the car falling into the pool, I thought this will be a movie with superpowers involed at a wild party.

I just hope Project X 2 will have a bullied loser having party, getting to beat up his bullies and get his girl, kind of like Drillbit Taylor.

    • U have no clue

  8. I’m so sick of this story.
Not the story that Project X will have a sequel (it won’t) but that the latest high profile failure will. Because it happens EVERY TIME. Every single time a movie crashes, the studio immediately spreads rumors that a sequel is in the works in a desperate attempt to save face. They said they were gonna make a sequel to Constantine, people.
Stop paying attention to this studio spin.

    • This might be true in some cases (John Carter), but Project X has made a ton of money and will be immensely profitable for WB. These movies have no-name actors and little production value. They’re cheap and very profitable. There WILL be a sequel.

  9. Well it will be just fantastic to make the second part of the sequel, but WB should just bring one character back that will be Oliver Cooper (costa) because on the end of the movie he said he will be making another big epic party
then he will just the only one getting back, and something cool it will be that he move to somewhere else like new york some where else and get on a high school and began another big party and better that will be my idea for the next movie

  10. if yur going to do a project x 2movie u better have the same cast (jonathan brown, oliver cooper, thomas mann) those are the actors that make this moviee just right and everybody would be like, what happened to the same actors as last time? you dont need a new fresh cast for a second one

  11. Why everyone hate this is a teenagers dream and they are ust stating that anyone can host a massive party. I am sure that the income of this movie will be alot aswell as its the best movie i have ever seen. Dont change the cast or anything like that or you could make thomas younger brother and J.B and Costa helped host another party and he is trig to live up to his older brothers party, apart from that you should keep the cast the way it is i dont know why idiots on this thread are hating on the characters and i thik the acting was great apart from were J.b SAID THERES THE NEWS LOL. Please dont change the characters and plz keep the movie and make a sequal.

    Thanks Robin From Northern Ireland.

  12. I really would like to see at least Thomas and Kirby back in it tho only 2 characters in the film that stood out to me. Personally i did think the film was awesome kinda slow to start but great towards the end.

  13. from italy…i love american pie films but this is so much better!!!

  14. Please let me be in the sequel!!

  15. Keep thomas kub, and costa, Kirby, miles, and Alexis knapp and add more new comers to the plot it would be epic if costa hosted the next party that’s his party and the whole city or state had a party cause costa is swagging out TO THE BREAK OF DAWN,YO. Haha let’s goooooooo

  16. They should use da same cast & base da movie on dem being seniors in high schools doing one last party or being freshman in college

  17. Keep the original cast

  18. bring back the three cast members , especially costa!! he was funny and perfect for a party movie!!

  19. It would be better if they left it how it is . There isn’t really any other way they can top the first. But Hollywood now is just about making money don’t care about what they distribute .

If they make a sequel they should bring back costa only, we can easily forget about the other cast members. I’m tired of the whole loser kids try to prove others or try an become cool. Something new an funny or this can easily become another ‘hangover 2′ pure disappointment

  20. Project X was one of the best movies I have personally because of the crazy events that took place. Others enjoyed it because they could relate to it, mostly the young crowd. I knew this movie would be a hit, with out a doubt. This movie got the crowd so hyped when i went to go see it in the theaters. I really hope that they make a sequel WITH THE ORIGINAL CAST ! I will surely be 1st in line for that one !

  22. Uma sequela seria o máximo e se nao for com os mesmos gajos nem vejo pa!

  23. They should definitly bring back the originall cast. They were hilarious and even though it is a party movie i wouldn’t mind seeing the love conection between kirby and thomas and how that plays out! also casta is the f****** man and JB is just great hahaha. Either way i can’t wait for the second movie!

  24. I think it would be awesome if Project X 2 would be Costa PARTEE!

  25. They should keep the original crew

  26. WTF? how could you even want new charecters in the second one!! i want thomas, Jb, and costa to be in the second one.. they were hilarous!! if they put new charectors in the second project x, i might consider not watching it!!!

  27. I think new face’s and they try to top the party.
