[SPOILERS!!!]
The 4th season series finale of Prison Break ended it’s dying ratings existence in its Friday night slot.
This final season trudged along while everybody was chasing Scylla. The General wanted it, Christina Scofield wanted it. China wanted it. India wanted. Hell, who didn’t want it? I wanted it so I can find some dirt to write about.

I tried to break this down in a chronological order, but my new novel adaptation of Fox’s Prison Break was getting way too long. The closing story became too convoluted with twists, turns and the reappearance of old characters that I felt that maybe I just needed to draw on my emotions about the finale and not try to detail out the episode. We all say it. Right?
There are some SPOILERS included in one way or another, so you have been warned.

The brothers Michael (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln (Dominic Purcell) went through a lot through the entire show: from Michael allowing himself to be incarcerated to help free his brother Lincoln for a crime he didn’t commit, to the endless manipulations they were put through to achieve their one true goal: freedom.
General Jonathan Krantz (Leon Russom) was the man who was in control until Michael undermined his entire infrastructure by snagging different parts of Scylla from his control. The General’s only leverage on people was to have his operatives put everyone’s families and friends under the gun. Literally. In the end, his electrical reward was the perfect gift for all his deeds.
Christina Scofield (Kathleen Quinlan) was nasty. The mother of Lincoln Burroughs and Michael Scofield, she was the nasty nail in everything. She was a true “Company” operative that did what was necessary to get her job or goals done. She even gave up her kids to affect her end game. When all was said and done, her demise at the hands of Sara Tanchredi (Sarah Wayne Callies) was perfect.

Theodore “T-Bag” Bagwell (Robert Knepper) was the tragic Shakespearean character in this show. Evil by impulse, he had gotten a taste of legitimate work and loved it. An honest job was one of the lures that the General used to manipulate him into doing his bidding.
Yet T-Bag had a keen analytical mind that was wasted on crime. In the end, the General’s biddings seemed to push T-Bag back to his core mode of murdering and “other” things. Knepper made T-Bag incredibly believable and I couldn’t decide to like, hate or feel sorry for him. In the end, his compulsive nature to take the easier path of crime landed him back where this all began, in a prison with some poor fool hanging on to his pocket linen.
Alexander Mahone (William Fichtner) was a catalyst of action when he had sufficient inspiration. I really enjoyed Fichtner’s portrayal of the character. In fact I like most of what William Fichtner does. He proves that men with receding hairlines can get the job done! Though he was forced to become allies with Scofield, things were worked out in the end for him.
Donald Self (Michael Rapaport) was the fed who promised immunity and gave the escapees blank paper for their work. Who then found himself manipulated back into the fold to be part of this ragtag team of non-criminals (mostly) committing criminal deeds. In the end, he was getting what he deserved as he found himself in a hospital.
Rappaport made us believe that Self was there to help, until he turned on the brothers. Then we didn’t know what to think about his loyalties until I decided that Self was loyal to no one but his own end game. In the end when he was put in a corner so to speak, his written defiance to the feds showed his loyalties finally cemented in with the gang and I’m mixed on his ending. In some ways he deserved it for all his manipulations. Then again, who deserves that kind of vegetative state?
Honorable mention though she wasn’t in the finale:

Jodi Lyn O’Keefe as Gretchen Morgan. I can’t remember a time when a character was done so well. O’Keefe played Gretchen so well that A: I hated every scene she was in. B: Every scene she wasn’t in, I was hoping the scene was producing some end-game to Gretchen’s demise. Yea, it was that bad. A kudos to the actress for scarring me for life.
The Finale Of Twists
Everyone had either been kidnapped or had someone they knew kidnapped or was going to be kidnapped. The other angle that kept coming at me was that every 30 minutes or so, someone else had a gun to Michael’s head. And everyone was tricking everyone. At least Michael had dissected that damn Scylla.
All the on-the-sly maneuverings that went on allowed some old faces and other government entities to show up and finally get the upper hand.
There were a few fresh faces of old in the mix. Fernando Sucre (Amaury Nolasco) and Benjamin Miles “C-Note” Franklin (Rockmond Dunbar). Sucre and C-Note show up as C-Note has a way for everyone to get himself or herself out of this endless spiral of legal trouble they keep finding themselves in and they work their way toward finding Michael and Lincoln.
And suddenly there’s Paul Kellerman, (Paul Adelstein) offering a legal way out of this whole debacle, as it seems he’s backed by the United Nations. Man, everyone was in on this.
In the end, Kellerman had the power to exonerate everyone. Sucre keeps the pen he used to sign his freedom. Everyone bids farewell. Everyone’s loved ones are safe.
The End Let A Steam Out Of My Bag
As everyone is settling into normalcy, Michael’s nose starts to bleed again. You’ve got to be kidding me. Then we jump to four years later and Michael is dead.

It’s four years later and we watch Sara and Michael Jr. gather together with Sucre, Mahone and Lincoln to pay a remembrance visit to Michael’s grave. Lincoln leaves the ever-iconic origami crane on top of the tombstone.
My Quick Take
This finale had to pack a lot into two hours.
Quick nit: Did you notice the Verizon commercial showing off their streaming video in the first hour? They were showing scenes that weren’t going to happen for another 45 minutes? Just brilliant.
I think the show took a ton of extra turns and twists and steps to get where they were in the finale.
It felt like the writers never had an end game, but they let the writing take them wherever it did. That works for some, but then in the end, it feels like writers are scrambling to account for things they hadn’t fully explored or finalized.
Even though I enjoyed watching the finale, there were so many different twists and turns in it that it got old for me. At one point, we were just waiting for the close. It felt like an over-hyped James Bond action flick. Sometimes there’s so much action that it is no longer exciting to see yet one more explosion. Whoopee.
Michael’s death almost seemed to suck the emotion out of me. It distracted from the entire journey of these four years. It disappointed me that after all that work and effort, his only real reward was his own death. Does that mean he’s truly escaped and is free now? I don’t know.
I was hanging out on Twitter before and during the show and Twitter was aflame with frustration and anger toward the ending. It seemed anti-climatic after all was said and done.

For me, the image I can’t get out of my head, when all is said and done, is Lincoln putting the origami crane on Michael’s tombstone. For me, that sad and touching scene will probably be my memory of this whole series.
At least my emotions were invoked one last time and they managed to engage my imaginative depression one last time before closing credits.
I thought the first two years were fantastic.
After that, I know that Fox wanted to keep a ratings winner in their pocket, but the stretching of the feasibility started after the gang got manipulated into helping Self and then everyone else and their mother (literally) after that. If I stick to the first two years, I say fantastic. The third year, well, yea, OK, it was still good. But then this last season I was on-board solely out of sheer loyalty. Loyalty and the hope for a great end game kept me watching. I could not abandon Michael. I needed to see how he came out of all this.
How did you feel about the finale of Prison Break, the season as a whole or the entire 4-year run? Let us know.

I loved the show from day one. I also love the fact that there’s a forum like this to discuss the series finale. Michael dying was indeed bittersweet. He was sick but managed to enjoy a sense of freedom, love and marriage before he died. It was like I felt his death coming as the scenes were closing to an end. The series could still spin-off with Michael Jr. growing up with his own “Prison” hardships. So sad that it’s over.
By the way…I’m a car guy and that Cadillac Escalade Hybrid that Lincoln used for “Company” errands, is an ‘08 model and so were the black Toyota Seqouia and Corolla models used in the show. Michael dying in ‘05, hmmm…
Ok first of all michael isn’t dead. It’s a faked death and we’ll find out why in the last two episodes.Secondly was i the only one who thought it was completely pointless bringing back C-note.I mean could kellenger not have gone straight to sucre himself.
@arsenal, it was the series finale, they try and bring as many cast members back as possible on those…
C-note’s appearance was great, as it wasn’t clear if he lived after he hung himself at the end of Season 2.
well if they were trying to bring back as many characters as possible why not have gretchen come back.at least she would have a purpose there having been involved with the whole scylla thing from the start.
Well Gretchen might come back in the Final Break dvd, who knows? Last we saw of her she was clipped and down, the police more than likely captured her.
She was a great character though I agree the sexual tension between her and Link was great!
Prison Break was beginning to drag on too long. It was the right time for a finale, but I think that the way Michael dies was dumb. Didn’t they take care of his tumor with the revolutionary surgery which allowed his mother to live on? it would have been OK for him to live, but if the writers felt that they had to kill Michael, why not have him give his life for the final victory over the Company? Just dying from cancer was lame.
@Mike I have a feeling the writers have a more noble death? planned for Michael in the upcoming “Final Break” dvd coming out soon.
I absolutely agree with all those that said they enjoyed the finale. I think it was amazing. Sad? Yes. Unexpected? Absolutely! The writer’s did their job on this one! You have shock, surprise, hatred, justice absolute bliss and dissapointment, all packed into one fabulous ending! I think the saddest thing for me right now is that it’s over. Otherwise, BRAVO!
Stellar piece of journalism there Bruce. It’s anticlimactic, not anti-climatic. Are you against the weather? And the use of “end-game” throughout the article show you didn’t use a thesaurus once. Bravo!
Just because there are two more episodes that doesnt mean Michael faked his death or that he died during a prison break.
Lets not jump to conclusions.
Its all because of FOX.
why does FOX have to cancel PB? whats with the rating issues and stuff?
if PB wasn’t cancelled, perhaps we’d see another season,
if we have another season, perhaps mike didn’t die.
if mike didn’t die, perhaps LJ will be available to be cast at that time.
and
if mike didnt die, and LJ is casted, then perhaps there wont be any disappointment to all of us….
I Have been a long fan of prisom break !! But what a deception for the end . It is a scandal the way the serie has been ended .
why should he had to be dead at the end ?? come on !!!!
could have been a soft end (and they leave happy for ever)style .
He for sure deserved it
so sad that michael died. but it was a good series finale.
Joe
You know, it IS possible to point out problems with an article WITHOUT being a complete dick about it.
Vic
I thought Kellerman was killed in season 2?
HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE HORRIBLE, ENDING. THEY SHOULDN’T HAVE LET MICHAEL DIE – LIKE SOMEONE ELSE SAID – JUST THEM LET THEM ALL RIDE OFF INTO THE SUNSET TOGETHER – IT DID SEEM LIKE IT WAS ALL FOR NOTHING. I LOVED THIS SERIES FROM DAY ONE AND CERTAINLY WASN’T EXPECTING ANYTHING LIKE THAT FOR THE ENDING – BAD MOVE ON THE WRITERS PART.
It’s fine that Michael dies. I actually am impressed that the writers even had the balls to do it.
What’s not fine was this entire last season of Prison Break. Pathetic! Horrible. How did we go from an amazing show that was season one to this? From an amazing escape plan to a plot to take over the world? Super-lame.
And all this sneaking up behind someone with a gun… but wait… someone just snuck up behind them with a gun… is the worst, laziest kind of writing there is.
I fully expect that if they have this 2-hour special, Michael will be alive. Why not? They did it for everyone else? Oh, and guess who else will probably show up and help save the day? Why not have Brad Bellick come back? Oh and Abruzzi and Haywire and Tweener! Yeah, they’re not really dead either.
I think I have the plot for “The Final Break.” The Company is also running hell and secretly hijacks Michael so he can’t go to heaven. He has to rescue all the people he killed and break out of hell and break into heaven. Yeah, why not? Wouldn’t be any worse than season 4.
It’s quite amusing that there’s so many people on here slating season 4. I’ve got a simple solution to your problems; could of stopped watching it and moved on to other programmes perhaps?
For me I enjoyed season 4. People say it was all about Scylla, as if it’s a bad thing. Well…hello? in order to take down the company this is what they needed? So obviously the whole season will be about Scylla! It was building up to Scylla in season three with Whistler’s Bird Book, if you remember at the begining of season 4 he was against the company to find Scylla, which is why the company wanted him out of Sona in season 3 because he had the bird book. So when you think about it, it does link up. I enjoyed Don self’s character, turning on the team by killing Miriam was superb. The fate of Self was quite an eye opener. But it needed to be, not everyone can have a happy ending and fitting in as a sort of pay back for putting his wife in a vegatative state in the first place. I was absolutely shocked to see michael dead at the end; when Sara and Michael jr. was in the marketplace I didnt for a second think of a Michael being dead at the end. People complain about it not being a happy ending, but imagine if Michael was alive, and all they did was walk off together with Mahone, Sucre and Lincoln? I bet any money people would have criticized it for being too predictable not a good enough ending to a good series blah blah. You all predicted Michael to be alive and well, but you’re all shocked to see his grave at the end. That, was superb, and very fitting to sum up an unpredictable Programme. It left me in shock for hours after watching it, I can’t say I would have had the same reaction if he would have walked into the sunset with his family. I’m really gonna miss Prison Break a great deal, I’m happy with all 4 seasons, not so much 3, but I think it would have been just as good had it not been for the Writer’s Strike, and I’m sad to see it finished. But, even I can admit they can only break out and go back in so many times before it’s over, bring on the special 2-hour episode in the next few weeks!
Don’t click if you dont want spoilers, this page has always been dead on…they have spoilers for the 2 hour event…..

I got into this series too, the first two seasons I watched, I think I watched them, I stopped when they were still in some like South American prison, I don’t think I saw what happened, I think I stopped right before his girl came back from the dead (which seemed to me like they were doing for ratings because everyone liked her) well I wasn’t interested anymore at that point.
It seemed to drag on too long and get way outta hand and it became like a world wide conspiracy of insane proportions, all because his brother killed some dude (which he never really did apparently but cant remember doing or not doing…)
SO after all is said and done I’m really curious if I should put it on Netflix or something or just forget about it altogether. Hmmm….
so..answer a question for me…what happened to Brad Bellick?
i know that he supposedly died..HA..do you really believe that? maybe hes the key to the finale?
The whole 4 years of Prison Break was great !! I do agree that the last season drag on a bit, but had to see how everything turned out. I did not like the ending very much, I don’t think Michael should have died. They did great with the other characters, but it was sad to see Self the way he was. At the end his loyalty was with the gang and he should have been saved by recooperating in the hospital, not trapped in his own mind. T-Bag….I wanted to believe that the man changed, he had issues, the making of his own childhood. But at the end, he could’nt control himself and went back to his evil ways and turned up on the wrong side and ended up back in Prison where he actually belongs for all teh crimes he commited in the past. Overall the seasons were great and most likely add them all to my collection.
I was shocked, and saddened with Michael’s death. It did leave an empty feeling. I agree with most, and think that the first two seasons were AWESOME, the 3rd was good, and the fourth could’ve been better but, I’m not complaining, I LOVE Prison Break. Someone mentioned the book that T-Bag was reading “Gate” that was in reference to Gate, the place T-Bag was pretending to be that salesman, and Danny was Kellerman’s partner that he killed if I remember correctly. I’m so sad to see Prison Break end, and hope that we’ll see alot more of Dominic Purcell, Wentworth and the rest of the awesome cast in future movies/tv series!!!
Yes Myah!!! I believe you’re right. I was trying to figure out who “Danny” was. Thanks a bunch. If I remember correctly, he was having second thoughts about the whole conspiracy. P.B. was/is indeed a great show. The writers strike crippled Hollywood in more ways than one.
Btw, I remember Bellick teasing a young inmate (Season 1?) with a burger, fries and milk shake. When he dipped the fries in the shake and ate it, I thought “yuck” at first…then found myself doing the same thing a week later. Lol! That scene was short yet powerful. Maaannnn I’m gonna’ miss P.B.
I’m still hoping for Michael Jr. to have a series. : )
It was a sad ending but he die in honor…everyone will remember him forever..this is the best show ever..
I know some people are sad that there won’t be a season 5; but really I don’t think the viewers are gonna wait 8 seasons for Linc and Michael to be free for good. I didn’t like the fact that Michael died but this is not Disney where there is always a happy ending. I agree with someone here that said it would’ve been corny. I watched this entire show and it’s one of my favorites ever along with 24, Fringe and Lie to me. I’m very satisfied with the finale.
I loved Prison Break! I thought season 3 was somewhat strange, and season 4 a little long in the tooth. However, it has easily been one of my favorite all-time shows. I do believe that it is now officially over, and there is no more. The season 4 DVD, includes everything but the final 2 episodes, then the Final Break, is just the final 2 episodes…That is it! Please let me know if I am missing something here, but I really believe that Prison Break has concluded FOREVER.
I diagnose Michele with Benjamin button’s disease !!
How about this? If they get enough people to call, email and write in to bring it back, they could bring back Michael, since we never really seen the 4 years that past. Another agency or entity could have staged his death and Michael could very well be working on the inside? Who knows what the writers, producers, Fox might do… Just a thought…
I am angry that the series is finished, why not season 5? since we didn’t see how michael died, so there is a chance of saying he faked his death. bring him back and make Kellerman’s freedom papers fake. We all loved prison break but the ending was unfair to michael. Why nose bleed since the company treated him with the best medical instruments? it doesnt make sense. Please bring it back… Fox please bring season 5.. it was my life.
