There’s a new, music video-style featurette online for the upcoming big-budget video game adaptation Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time that showcases the romance between the Prince (Jake Gyllenhaal) and the warrior princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton).
Viewers take note – those hoping for some deep insight into the dynamics of the relationship between these character from the actors portraying them will unfortunately be disappointed.
Those who seek some cool visual FX shots involving time travel – in addition to footage of Gyllenhaal showing off his ripped body while rehearsing the choreography for the film’s fight sequences – should definitely get their fill ;-) .

So far, the advertising campaign for Prince of Persia has been heavy on drawing comparisons between the epic action flick and the Pirates of the Caribbean films – explicitly so in the first official trailer – so the Will Turner/Elizabeth Swan romance from that series seems like the obvious parallel for what moviegoers might expect from the Dastan/Tamina pairing.
However, those who found the Will/Elizabeth romance dull and often just a hindrance to the action in the POTC films – which, as I understand it, is most every fanboy out there – can take comfort that at least the dynamic between Dastan/Tamina seems more energetic and entertainingly flirtatious. Plus, the Prince of Persia duo look to be at the forefront of the action throughout the film, so here’s hoping for the best.
The big issue for now – as we mentioned in our 2010 Summer Movie Preview – is whether or not Prince of Persia can break the trend of most video game-inspired films and actually translate well onto the big screen. Having a quality director like Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) at the helm certainly bodes well for this adventure flick – that alone is a trait most every other video game-to-film adaptation has lacked up to this point in time (insert Uwe Boll joke of choice).
But what do you folks think? Does Prince of Persia look like a hit or miss so far?
Prince of Persia: Sand of Time hits regular (but shockingly NOT 3D) theaters on Wednesday, May 28.
