Walt Disney Pictures has released additional footage from its upcoming adventure flick Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the Mouse House’s big-budget adaptation of the popular video game of the same name.

Prince of Persia – which is directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) – revolves around one Prince Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal), a ruggish warrior who seeks to protect an ancient dagger capable of controlling time itself from the villainous warlord Nizam (Ben Kingsley) – a quest he is aided on by the mysterious Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton).

Will Prince of Persia break the trend of previous video game-based movies and be a financial and/or critical success?  Based off this early footage  it should at least leave a better impression on moviegoers than the infamous 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie.

First, we have a clip of Dastan in action as he flees an onslaught of guards – armed with bows and arrows no less – across the rooftops of a Middle Eastern town.  Suffice it to say he gives them a run for their money.

Just have a look for yourselves:

Based off this clip, it seems that Prince of Persia will avoid the overly-kinetic, rapid-fire editing style of a lot of modern action flicks – Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen being a prime example – and settle for something overall more comprehensible and less exhausting.

Is it just me or do the sound effects seem a tad bit over-the-top, almost borderline cartoonish?  That might seem less the case when I view this film in theaters so I’ll withhold judgement for now.

Additionally, there is a short scene that shows Dastan and Tamina as they run for their lives while an ancient, sand-strewn temple collapses beneath their feet.

You can check that out below:

The CGI in this sequence looks kind of dodgy to me – not to mention the expression of terror on Gyllenhaal’s face is unintentionally hilarious – but that too might be due to the fact that I’m viewing this footage on a computer and not up on the big screen.

But what do you think?  Does Prince of Persia look as cool – if not more so – than before?

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time will hit theaters in the U.S. on May 28, 2010.

  1. It looks like its going to be a big success. This was one my favorite games and cant wait to see it on the big screen! And i know they are going to make a sequel.

  2. some how this scene reminds me of Disney’s Aladdin, you know the first scene where Aladdin been chase by many guards. all we need is the song from the scene ‘one jump’.

  3. I cannot wait to see this movie when it comes out ? It’s like Sinbad
