Maria Bello Prime Suspect Series Premiere NBC NBC Halts Production on Prime Suspect; No Return In Sight

NBC’s newest tough-as-nails cop drama Prime Suspect appears to have been given an unceremonious farewell, as the network is shutting down production on the freshman series after leaving it off of their 2012 midseason schedule.

Prime Suspect, which is an adaptation of the popular British series starring Helen Mirren, has had trouble finding an audience since its September premiere.  With an initial rating of just over 6 million viewers, Prime Suspect quickly dropped to an average of 4.5 million viewers per episode.

Despite Prime Suspect receiving favorable reviews, NBC isn’t in any position to allow a new show to underperform – even if it is a competent series. That being said, NBC did attempt to help find an audience for the series. Following The Playboy Club’s cancelation, NBC replayed the first three episodes of Prime Suspect in its time slot. Unfortunately, that didn’t help.

Of course, Prime Suspect hasn’t officially been canceled yet, and being left off of the mid-season schedule alone doesn’t mean that it’s not coming back – this is something that Community fans should take note of, following the announcement of Community being put on hiatus.

Unfortunately, whereas Community is continuing to film episodes, NBC is shutting down production on the Prime Suspect without any sign when it might start up again. While it’s common for television production to shut down around the holidays, Deadline is reporting that the cast and crew have been notified that there isn’t a date set for production to begin again. According to the network, they’re still weighing their options.

Helen Mirren in 'Prime Suspect'

For fans of Prime Suspect, this is certainly not the best news in the world. Fourtunatly, if you enjoy what Maria Bello did with the role, you still have the opportunity to also see what Helen Mirren did with it. Desptie NBC’s Prime Suspect only producting 8 episodes, the original British series ended after just 14 episodes. Of course, the British version’s 14-episode run stretched over the course of 15 years, from 1991 to 2006. Each episode was  3+ hours and followed Mirren as DCI Jane Tennison over the course of her career.

As NBC is still “looking over their options” with the series, we’ll make sure to keep you up to date if anything changes. But as it stands now, it would be wise to bid farewell to Prime Suspect.

You can watch the last remaining episodes of Prime Suspect Thursdays @10pm on NBC

  1. I LOVE this show…

  2. Wow this stinks. I really loved this show & loved the whole cast. Maria Bello was AWESOME!!!

  3. This show was the only one on TV worth watching. Mindless crap is all that continues to air.

  4. Dear NBC,

You SUCK. Thank you for cancelling the best new show on television.

  5. SO disappointing!!! I liked this show very much and was checking every week for it’s return. Cast was great and especially Maria Bello. I don’t get ;{ Maybe they will see the light?

  6. Please, with due grace, reconsider the decision on cancellation of “Prime Suspect.” The show reveals quite marvelous acting by M. Bello and her supporting cast. The show’s writing is quite eloquent and much to the point with its delightfully candid exposition! We, who found this gritty, well-done show, were fully nonplussed by its continual displacement among NBC”s panoply of lesser shows. You, of NBC, have determined, with wrong reasoning, “Prime Suspect’s” difficulty in holding viewer’s interest The show is erudite, streetwise, and moves with a crackling realism. Reconsider, and provide “Prime Suspect” the fuller opportunity it deserves in your line-up, it truly pleads for a future. Thanks, in advance!

  7. I absolutely cannot believe that NBC would cancel this show. Mario Bello is awesome, but so are the other characters. Each provides a unique addition to the show.
Another thing is this–Mario Bello doesn’t have to run around with hair extensions and full make-up while she investigates a murder. She eats in the break room like a real person would. The jokes are gritty and the humor is intelligent.
Is that the problem, NBC? Do you prefer your cop shows to be all saccharin, with the females dressed to the nines while they run after criminals?
Maybe TNT, AMC, or USA will pick up this show, like one of them did with Southland. That would be your loss, NBC….

  8. now NBC will have more time for Obama propaganda

  9. Nbc blows, u finally got a good show then u cancel it. Back to watching cbs

  10. Sooooo UPSET!!!!! Loved that show!!! Bring it back!!! Why can’t NBC give a show a chance???? Give it a moment to gain an audience? Come on!

  11. Just found out my worst suspicions were correct: NBC has cancelled a show that was well-written and well-acted, with characters evolving and merging in their work and personalities. Must have a lot of boneheads working on those upper floors at 30 Rockefeller Center. Maybe THEY need to be cancelled, and keep the good shows on the air. No chance, I know.

  12. Wow how could you cut one of the best acting shows on TV ? Way to much reality crap! No serious acting Anymore!!! Why wouldn’t you move it to a different night and do some advertising since there wasn’t any to speak of!!!!! Seriously stupid manouver NBC

  13. WHAT ARE YOU DOLTS THINKING ???!!! This was one of the best shows on the tube and you can’t find a way to make it work but you can put on more mindless “reality” shows??? Give me a break !!! Put this show back on the air !!!

  14. loved the show. nbc sux.

  15. Please don’t take this show off the air. This is such a great show. Finally characters you could come to love and hate. This gritty show was a favorite in our home, and there weren’t many this year. Please reconsider and let this show take some time to develop the characters, I am sure the TV viewers will become fans. Love Maria Bello and the chemistry between the cast members is amazing.

  16. Great show… well written… produced… please bring it back!!!

My wife liked the show also.

  17. This is CRAP! I love this show, Maria Bello is awesome. This show is different from any other primetime cop show. So sad to see it go :(

  18. Do you actually know how many people watch this show. Geez..give it time.I told many and once they watched it they were hooked. It’s like Hill Street Blues and NYPD with a strong female lead. Better than the predictable CSI series. Cancel a few reality shows for God’s sake. People watch what their given..give them reality and then the polls say reality wins…give them only comedies and the same holds true. There are people out there that love dramas…..sad

  19. This is a real shame.. This is the best cop show since NYPD Blue.. Every character was well cast and the writing was tremendous.. The humor that finds a home in this gritty Drama was so well placed and written that it never felt out of place. If you were to give this show a better time slot and support it with some advertising it would gain traction as I am sure the 4.5 million viewers it has are loyal and the base will grow.. There is a lot of crap on TV these days and this show was a true breath of fresh air…

  20. This is why I HATE nbc. The dont give these shows a chance. They start a series, and then just cancel it without any kind ending. Every single time I get involved in a show on nbc this happens. I guess I will stick with a more reliable network like ABC.

  21. Say it ain’t so….NO NO, this is a Great Show. Just when I found my Thursday night show, it’s gone. Please reconcider….Bello was GREAT and so was the cast.

  22. I cannot believe “Prime Suspect” may be no more. I resented all the publicity at first, but once I watched this show, I was hooked.

  23. Please consider putting Prime Suspect back on at a better time slot. I dont watch tv that often but I looked forward to this show. All of the actors were very likeable, greatly convincing in their parts and meshed well together. Maria Bello is Refreshing real! You Guys at the top really called this one wrong,Big mistake. Bring it back

  24. Can’t believe you dropped Prime Suspect!!! I’ve been waiting & wondering why it hasn’t been on. You need to rethink this decision!!!! PLEASE

  25. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I love this to much….Maria is so great in it very well written. I’ve been waiting for it to come back on.

  26. really.. i actually put up a schedule on watching this show.. and now its gone.. How many viewers should a show get to be successful?

lol i actually thought 4.5 million viewers per episode is pretty high?

  27. This is my favorite new show. Bello is a breath of fresh air for real woman. This is the only NBC program I watch. This show is intelligent and interesting. I am very disappointed that it may end.

  28. My wife and I cannot believe that Prime Suspect has stopped production and is probably cancelled. This in our opinion was the best of the new TV shows. Excellent storylines, great acting by Maria Bello and the rest of the cast. We looked forward to each weeks show. NBC should reconsider and remove some of the other mindless crap on their schedule. We hope one of the other networks/cable companies picks this up.

  29. Exactly!! Look what happened with Southland!!! NBC had premature rejection of that show too, again one of my favorites…somebody with a brain at TNT snapped it up and it’s one of the best and best watched shows on TNT! No wonder NBC is having problems, they ax all their best shows and keep a lot of junk people don’t watch for long. DUH!!!!
