Maria Bello Prime Suspect Series Premiere NBC NBC Halts Production on Prime Suspect; No Return In Sight

NBC’s newest tough-as-nails cop drama Prime Suspect appears to have been given an unceremonious farewell, as the network is shutting down production on the freshman series after leaving it off of their 2012 midseason schedule.

Prime Suspect, which is an adaptation of the popular British series starring Helen Mirren, has had trouble finding an audience since its September premiere.  With an initial rating of just over 6 million viewers, Prime Suspect quickly dropped to an average of 4.5 million viewers per episode.

Despite Prime Suspect receiving favorable reviews, NBC isn’t in any position to allow a new show to underperform – even if it is a competent series. That being said, NBC did attempt to help find an audience for the series. Following The Playboy Club’s cancelation, NBC replayed the first three episodes of Prime Suspect in its time slot. Unfortunately, that didn’t help.

Of course, Prime Suspect hasn’t officially been canceled yet, and being left off of the mid-season schedule alone doesn’t mean that it’s not coming back – this is something that Community fans should take note of, following the announcement of Community being put on hiatus.

Unfortunately, whereas Community is continuing to film episodes, NBC is shutting down production on the Prime Suspect without any sign when it might start up again. While it’s common for television production to shut down around the holidays, Deadline is reporting that the cast and crew have been notified that there isn’t a date set for production to begin again. According to the network, they’re still weighing their options.

Helen Mirren in 'Prime Suspect'

For fans of Prime Suspect, this is certainly not the best news in the world. Fourtunatly, if you enjoy what Maria Bello did with the role, you still have the opportunity to also see what Helen Mirren did with it. Desptie NBC’s Prime Suspect only producting 8 episodes, the original British series ended after just 14 episodes. Of course, the British version’s 14-episode run stretched over the course of 15 years, from 1991 to 2006. Each episode was  3+ hours and followed Mirren as DCI Jane Tennison over the course of her career.

As NBC is still “looking over their options” with the series, we’ll make sure to keep you up to date if anything changes. But as it stands now, it would be wise to bid farewell to Prime Suspect.

You can watch the last remaining episodes of Prime Suspect Thursdays @10pm on NBC

  1. Well this sucks, it was my new favorite show of the season.

Can’t they try moving it on Fridays? Isn’t Chuck ending this December? So maybe give it that timeslot and it’ll survive with those rating.

If not then hopefully someone like TNT will pick it up and it’ll thrive on cable like it should.

  2. What will happen to the hat?

    • Lol I was wondering that myself

    • I think maria bello looks AWESOME in her fedora. why is it that everyone has to look and dress like everyone else. I thought this nation was about individuality! I wish hats would come back in style. Getting tired of grunge hair on men…hat would hide grease!!!!!!!

    • The hat must go.

  3. The BBC version was so much better.

  4. Unfortunate. I liked this show.

  5. It isn’t/wasn’t a bad show. I’m not crazy about Bello’s portrayal but it’s got decent storylines.

This must really feel bad to Kenny Johnson. First, he was killed last night on Sons of Anarchy and now his other show is probably being cancelled.

  6. The character that Maria Bellow has created on Prime Suspect is truly a delight. The whole show surprises and pleases. Yes, it has a great sense of humor and I can laugh without a laugh track. Please, please, keep Prime Suspect coming.

  7. Nooo! I love Prime Suspect! They need to give it more time.

  8. So NOT pleased!!!

  9. It seems that networks are so quick to dump shows. This one is unfortunate because it is a good show. *frown face*

  10. I love this show!! I am very disappointed it has come to this. They should have lined this up with Law & Order, not with the lame Whitney!

  11. After the episode where she worried about ruining the life of a child rapist by telling the woman that was dating him that he was a convicted of raping a girl the same age as her daughter I tuned out of this show.

  12. I am very disappointed that they aren’t renewing Prime Suspect. Really liked this show!

  13. NBC I am done with your incompetent decisions. There are only a handful of good shows left and prime suspect was my favorite new show. Either Neilson ratings are false or you need better measures. I guess I have to pay for more cable channels. Unbelievable.

    • I agree. Come on NBC – CBS has a great line up. You will never have top shows if you don’t give them time to grow and have people spread the word. I don’t mean a few months either. Give this show a break. I just found it about five episodes ago. It is refreshing. And to the people having a problem with the fedora – look up Marlene Dietrich – she was way before her time.

  14. …and yet again NBC gives themselves a proctological exam by stuffing their collective heads up their bums…

  15. NBC, I think we should just cancel you!

  16. Please don’t cancel Prime Suspect—it’s the best show on TV—not just NBC. It has a growing following—-keep it on!!!

  17. Best new show of the season. I don’t get it. Shows like Whitney and Unforgiven make it…Criminal Minds, Bones, NCIS (anything) survive. Who is watching this crap?

  18. What a mistake! this is one of the best new shows on TV and I do also still watch the original with Helen Mirren, and this new version is one of the best re-makes of a British show that I have seen in YEARS, many re-makes are rubbish, but this was not I will miss it…..

  19. All I can say is that truly sucks. And that NBC should get stuffed!

  20. If more episodes were as good as the one upstate it wouldn’t be cancelled. That was some Great TV!

  21. Wow. The yahoo website discussing the cancellation of the show is so negative about strong women and most comments are around “why does she have to be so male”. I get it though because yahoo news and fox news are two peas in a pod. This is a great show. It’s good detective work with knowledge of the law. She has flaws and made big mistakes and learns from them. Great! and yet good at her job but not a super hero. and handling the tough situation of finding a space in a male world without whining about it.

  22. I agree with a previous comment, this was my new favorite show!!!! NBC needs to get behind it.

  23. DO NOT CANCEL!!!!!!!

    • This REALLY stinks!!!! I love(d) this show!!!! Is there a petition we can sign to keep the show??

  24. I will gladly sign a petition to keep Prime Suspect, a really quality show. NBC cancelled a great show 42 years ago (Star Trek). I signed petitions then also. Learn from your mistakes NBC! I have avidly watched Prime Suspect since it premiered and have relished every episode. Don’t cancel it!!!

  25. Please do not cancel Prime Suspect!! It is literally my favorite show on TV. I don’t understand why NBC barely gave it a chance. The show has excellent writing and acting. I will never invest my time in another NBC show if Prime Suspect is cancelled. It makes no sense how CSI, Bones, and NCIS survive season after season when they are horrible, but a brilliant show like Prime Suspect will be cancelled so soon? Ridiculous!

  26. I would go to another Network if I owned this show. It is well written, well thought out and Well, just plain and simple…it is good.
