“It began with the Black Plague. Within weeks, the dead began to rise.” So begins the first U.S. trailer for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, the upcoming movie starring Lily James (Cinderella) – based on Seth Grahame-Smith’s 2009 novel of the same name. The previously-released U.K. trailer can be viewed here, and the newly-unveiled U.S. trailer can be watched above.
Directed by Burr Steers (17 Again, The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud), who also wrote the screenplay for the movie, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies re-imagines Jane Austen’s classic novel, turning the five Bennet sisters into weapon-wielding zombie fighters with an attitude.
James stars as Elizabeth Bennet, with Sam Riley (Maleficent) opposite as her moody and mysterious Mr. Darcy. Matt Smith (Doctor Who) takes on the role of the insufferable Mr Collins, while Suki Waterhouse (Insurgent), Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows), and newcomers Ellie Bamber and Millie Brady play the remaining Bennet sisters. Game of Thrones’ Charles Dance plays Mr Bennet, the father to these five young feminists, while Lena Headey plays Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
The road to getting this movie made has been a long one, with directors quitting and financing causing issues, so it’s great that the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies trailer promises all the blood, gore, and horror one would hope for in the adaptation of Smith’s hit novel. Not only that, but the film has stayed true to the Regency setting; in fact, it seems to place it very firmly at the center. Elements of Austen’s work are not lost either; such as the troubled romantic connection between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy and the weary resignation yet complete pride that Mr Bennet has for his daughters. (“My daughters are trained for battle, sir,” he tells Mr. Collins. “Not the kitchen.”)
Elizabeth’s gritty determination – another strong trait from both Austen and Smith’s novels – is also clear as she declares that she’s been training for this her whole life. She boldly states that she will never relinquish her sword for a ring, and when it’s mentioned that she would if the right man came along, she confidently declares that “The right man wouldn’t ask me to.” Make no mistake, these Bennet sisters are fierce, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies looks set to unleash five new feminist role-models upon the world when it’s released – along with some epic zombie slaying.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies arrives in U.S theaters on February 5th, 2016.
