Robert Rodriguez is in attendance at this year’s Comic-Con to promote Machete, but he took a moment to address speculation about a sequel to Predators – and offered insight into what fans can expect from a follow-up.

Modestly-budgeted for a summer blockbuster, Predators quickly recouped its expenses and received mostly positive reviews. It should come as no surprise that 20th Century Fox is hungry to repeat that success. The ending of the film certainly hinted at the possibility of further installments and Rodriguez confirms that he’s been approached to get the ball rolling on a sequel.

Apparently Predators was the studio’s way of “testing the market” – and the scope of the film was deliberately modest. Rodriguez spoke with IGN asserting that, with a renewed interest in the franchise, we can expect bigger and better things from a Predators sequel:

“They really wanted it to be pretty contained, pretty scaled-back. They didn’t want to put too many of the ideas into it that we could save for a second one. So we could see what the appetite was, because the bigger movie would actually be what comes following that. That kind of sets up a new storyline, new location and world, and then you can really go crazy from there.”

Rodriguez goes on to say that while he’s got a few of his own ideas for the sequel, he’ll probably bring in other writers to pitch their take – and then choose the approach he likes best.

When asked about the possibility of stepping into the director’s chair for the next installment he brings up one potential obstacle:

“I don’t know… I think I have too many people wanting me to do Sin City 2 first!”

Personally, I only had two major complaints with Predators. The film never tried to flesh-out characters – beyond their one-dimensional archetypes. The second was the previously mentioned restrained scope and style. The alien jungle looked just like Earth’s jungles and, despite the fact that the planet was a game preserve, we  never saw any other creatures for the Predators to hunt. While these are relatively minor grievances, expanding on these details could have appeased fans who found Predators to be a little too similar to the original.

That said, it was still an entertaining ride and if it reinvigorated the studio’s faith in the Predator franchise – that’s a win in my book.

What do you think? What would you like to see in a Predators sequel?

  1. Sin city 2 first THEN Predators 2, and ONLY if he directs it lol

  2. Does anyone else find it insulting that they “held back” as a means of “testing the waters” on this film?

I walked out of it feeling rather unsatisfied.
Sure, there were predators, there was some action, there was a BIT of story, but honestly, there was absolutely nothing new in it. They brought absolutely nothing to the franchise. I walked away from it feeling that I may as well have stayed home and watched my DVD of the original Predator film.

For all the bitching and moaning on this website about the Alien vs Predator films, they contained considerably more material, and at least TRIED to push the envelope surrounding the subject matter.

    • I thought the film had a bit of a different tone than the others in that the other two films were about ‘we gotta get this mofo’ as apposed to this one where it’s more about survival. Although I’ll admit that a lot of the film’s potential stays just that potential, much like AVP. Like some of the characters I felt could have been really interesting if they had just been fleshed out a bit more, like the guy from Africa why was he okay with dying? Or what happened to the mercenary to make him leave the military? Were those other aliens dropped on the planet prey for the Predators or just another obstacle to weaken the humans? Is the predator civil an actual civil war or is more like the bigger group is oppressing the little guys?

I’m not positive but I bet a few things were left on the cutting room floor that could’ve really made this film a lot better. Still excited for the next movie though, as I want see what Rodriguez can do when he’s given a bigger budget and less restraints on the story.

    • Absolutely! This film was lackluster to say the least.I definitely won’t be duped into paying to see a sequel to this that crap.

    • Nah your wrong! they did put new things!
the Super Black Predators were new and the dogs!
and it was kind of like the 1st movie but it had a good story and it amazing!
5/5 come one theres alawys haters in every single movie!
      dont be one

      • oh please.
I don’t base my opinion on that of others.
who cares if “every other website gave it 5/5″ (which they didn’t, by the way.. many critics felt it was “entertaining, but on the whole, nothing to write home about. and by the way, THIS forum didn’t give it a perfect score, either)
        I watched the film.
        I found it lacking.
        I’m not a “hater”.
If I were a hater, I would not have gone to see it in the first place.

Just because you liked it doesn’t mean EVERYONE has to like it.
I found it lackluster, unengaging, uninteresting.

adding more of the same (wow! predators that are a different colour! who’da thunk. adding dogs that are basically.. the pig from the 1st film. wow, how… not new) doesn’t make it new. It didn’t push any envelopes. There was nothing story-wise that brought the story of predators forward.

      • Super Black Predators?! How were they different from the 1st. The guy who played the predator in 1 and 2 was actually 7 feet (Kevin Peter Hall who passed away). These predators were barely 6’5 and they looked anorexic, the one with red eyes. the dogs were new, but that was it. what about the other creatures that the were hunting or have hunted. Amazon has this Predator novel called Deep China Sea”. excellent for a movie, where the predator has recordings of other creatures on other planets that he has conqured and killed. They need to show us why the predators are the best hunters in the universe.

    • “I walked out of it feeling rather unsatisfied.
Sure, there were predators, there was some action, there was a BIT of story, but honestly, there was absolutely nothing new in it”

I guess a new planet, new Predators, alien hunting dogs, and Predator vs Predator action doesn’t count?

      • no, they don’t actually.
those are nothing more than window-dressing.
the STORY had nothing new to it.
it was in a jungle: check.
it had predators: check (oh boy, they were a different colour! woot, how original)
it had “alien hunting dogs” / wild boar: check (exactly like in the first film… had they DONE something with those hunting dogs, THEN it would ahve counted as something new and original… as it was, they came out of nowehere, some died, the others disappeared back into the forest. nothing new.)

god you guys are SO easy to please!
let me guess, you are the FIRST to b**** and moan about M. Knight Shyamalan.
would you even recognize originality in a film?

        • “it had predators: check”

Well a Preadtor movie with predators just seems kinda silly don’t you think???

“it had “alien hunting dogs” / wild boar: check (exactly like in the first film”

?????????????? WHAT? There were totally ZERO alien hunting dogs in the original film. Actually I don’t think there were even earth dogs…

“had they DONE something with those hunting dogs”

I forgot they all just stood there and acted cute… :/

“god you guys are SO easy to please!
let me guess, you are the FIRST to b**** and moan about M. Knight Shyamalan.
would you even recognize originality in a film?”

          Uhm……………………………….. 2 camels in a tiny car

          • Oops! I spelled “Predator” wrong

        • Also, how can you compare the alien hunting dogs to the boar in the first movie? Tripping your trap wires and stabbing it til it’s dead because it was dark and scared the livin’ $&%# out of you is one thing; an entire pack of mutant ninja turles running at your face while you’re trying to mow them down with your crazy big guns is something totally different.

  3. I wanna see other creatures they hunt besides boring humans who always end up surviving

    • the cockroach creature chasing Topher in Predators was an example of non-human prey…

      • Yes it was. Way to actually pay attention to the movie and not just be trolling like everyone else.

  4. I’m excited about this. Predators I felt has really opened the door for the next movie to show us a lot more about the Predators themselves. We got a little information about their society in that there is a sort of class system, but I would like learn a bit more. Plus by a larger scope I hope that means we’ll actually get to see this Predators civil war.

  5. My opinion. I’m burned out on the franchise. I felt the movie did good for what it was, but if it was announced that no more predator OR alien movies would be made, I could care less.

    • So you wouldn’t be disappointed if news broke tomorrow that Ridley Scott has decided not to do the next Alien film after all? Sure the name has been dragged through the mud a bit, but the next Alien film will be nothing short of epic…

      • I would love it if Scott didn’t direct the next Alien film. In fact, I would love it more if the film was canceled all together. That film is going to ruin the mystery of the creatures, which is one of the greatest things about the alien.

        • Touche…

  6. Yes They Should Put More Creatures then just humans! and make it before sin city 2 start workin on it now! more people want predators 2 then sin city 2!at the end of predators the movie it showed more people being dropped off the planet make those people arnold aka dutch! in the movie they said they got the best hunters from earth well arnold is considered one since he killed a predator!

    • lol…RR said himself more people are bugging him about this than a sequel to Predators

      • andy, watch the original one again my friend.

  7. I’d like to see Rod take this to a major urban metropolis.

Where the “Predators” would hunt down drug dealers for sport. The cops wouldn’t have a clue except for a lone officer that takes it personal.

They could even have DHLS trying to capture the aliens.
    ^
Naw that would prob suck,,, :-)

    • so you basically want him to remake Predator and Predator 2?
      You’re right, prboly never work

    • I hope that’s sarcasm :)

  8. 790 forget drug dealers. It’d be cool if they hunted all men with XXY chromosomes; the baby killers, child molesters, rapists, serial killers, people who are born with that extra chromosome that makes them feel good to hurt others. The predators will have a new tracking color spectrum built into their masks that will “see” the gene in people. The color it will display for those particular people will be “vomit pink”……

    • Interesting idea you have there, with the Predators going after scumbags, child rapists(ssame thing), and serial killers, but, truthfully, I think Dexter would kick the Predators asses!

    • Nice idea Desolate One, but to make that work you’d have to prove genetic inheritance is 100% responsible for rape, murder and other antisocial acts. The last time “eugenic euthanasia” was tried on a mass scale culminated in the Second World War. Also, I think you’re referring to XYY. XXY shrinks your nuts.

  9. screw all that, i wanna see the wars they have within thier own factions

  10. Anthony, didn’t they hint on that in the movie? Remember the “little predator” that was strung up on that pole? Remember, the bigger ones hunted the smaller ones when they were low on other species of creatures to hunt….

    • yes they did!! i just wanna see more of that and for them to expand on it more. hell maybe it’ll pick up where this one left off, who knows.

      • Normally that’s how (good) sequels work :)

  11. Uh, does no one remember the stickman alien and the cages used for his species?

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

    • You’re not crazy Sawse, you’re not crazy :)

  12. Anthony that’s way too cerebral for the mainstream. The entire film would have to be in subtitles. There goes half your audience :-)
    ^
Ok I changed It around a little for ya, Desolate One. How’s this grab ya?…. (No pun intended)
    ^
On there way to Hollywood, the Predators get lost and land in Rome, Italy…
Bored and disgusted by the locals, the Predators begin hunting down (boy loving Priests and gay Bishops) for sport.
The local cops are kept out, as the Vatican’s damage control team (super/gay Priests, Pope, etc) step in and take over. One non gay boy lover clergy knows what’s going on, but will he speak thy name out loud?
    ^
Meanwhile a secret division of MI:5 are sent in to capture the Predators. They get there, see what’s going on and then close off the area so the Predators won’t be bothered by the media.

After hunting down everyone in the Vatican the remaining non gay boy lover clergyman is given a trophy. Its a Roman Shield from long ago,,, Fin

  13. On a serious note I agree with Mike E.

After hearing Robert Rodriguez was in charge I knew this wouldn’t be a high brow science fiction epic. And after seeing the trailers and the lame setting I decided to avoid the theatrical release.

After reading Rod’s comments he sounds like he’s already somewhat burned out on the franchise.

    • i tend to think he’s more ready for Sin City 2 before giving this one another go

  14. Preadtors vs. Boondock Saints…? Maybe….

  15. “we never saw any other creatures for the Predators to hunt”

    Uhm… yes we did

Predators was definitely good enough to deserve a GOOD sequel. Keep ‘em coming!

  16. Ha! I’m actually in the middle of watching Boondock Saints right now…

So far its pretty good! ;-)

  17. Well what Predators needs is an interesting story, Duh…

It has to be simple but clever enough to be interesting. I was wondering if a different story could be told, like a stranded Predator ship is encountered by an “Aliens” like, colonial marine ship. The predator ship would be somewhat shot up, but the marines would go in to investigate. Maybe make it a prey transport ship. Have the ship stuck in an unstable orbit around some kind of stellar core. The marines don’t know what to make of it, but see benefits in capturing the ship and its technology. Here could be a good showcase of different kinds of hostile prey, injured predator crew treating the whole scenario like another hunt. Marines getting offed by unusual creatures, monsters always get loose you know. Have a three way showdown between a marine a predator and an immature Alien queen. Throw a few human captives on the ship too, more the merrier…

  18. Maybe in the sequel they won’t kill off every NON-WHITE person in the movie????????????????????????????????????????????

    • HE HE you gave me a surprise cliffhanger ending idea starring The Rock. I call it “The Eternal Face-Off.” People would call it the EEE FOO moment.

  19. But we did see other creatures in the game preserve, for the predators to hunt. Two of them.

One was an homage to the original Predator design.

    • oh joy, as im reading the comments, looks like there was a fight at the con..one was stabbed…good job morons, keep it coming. pork, yeah youre right, we did, lets just hope that they expand on that in the sequel too

  20. Yeah I heard that it was 2 people stabbed at 4:45 pm PST. Both taken to the hospital.
    ^
Let’s just hope they were fighting over something important like Inception or Tron Legacy, rather then something lame like Team Jacob vs Team whatever,,,

    • I heard it was over seats :/ in Hall H.

      • in alll my years of going to these..well this is the second one i didnt attend since 1992, this is the first incident that ive heard of. usually people are pretty chill

  21. The past few posts are a perfect example of how “good” this movie really was.The conversation goes from Predators to how a fight broke out at Comic-con.If that’s not an indictment on the film, then nothing is.

    • conversation was about Predators. Hall H story different? Sounds to me like the conversation hasn’t deviated a bit…

  22. They’ll make Hall H movie because of this one day. And the panel will be held in Hall B…
    ^
You know,,,the first thought I had was Kofi finally went nuts and went after the guy from Trekmovie. ;-)

    • hopefully this damn incident doesnt damnpen san diegos rep for hosting the con in the future. anyway im for a sequel or two, just hope RR takes the directors reigns

      • Really Anthony real predators should be on the silver screen. Bet security is beefed up in the future. I want to start a new organization for the cons, nerds against violence international Navi for short. Do you think I would get much interest?? :P

        • Maybe it was Avatar cosplayers who were “in so deep” they’d forgotten they could die in the real world, old man. Blue guy with badly-attached tail asked military guy if his mother gave him those scars, and it all ended in tears…

  23. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was two Pirate of Caribbean fanatics in full gear accidentally pulling there plastic swords out and forgetting there at a convention, and there weapons won’t fully penetrate plastic armor,,,

    Injuries,,, ambulance trip,,,,
    sober house….

Ah its prob two latino gangers. Lol,,,

    • Klingons performed CPR and assisted medical crews at the scene…

    • Actually, I think they were both Harry Potter fans(shrugs shoulders).

      • “Quidditch argument turns ugly. Wands used in sick brawl.”

  24. Nice acro Old Man,,,
    You should copyright that one.

There’s so much potential at CCon.

I hope to get some ideas produced myself next year.

    • Stabee becomes Grim Avenger of the Night, teams up with self-harming sidekick who’s good with computers. Like Kick-Ass, only more violent.

      • That’s a point: where were all the people dressed as superheroes while this was going on? Who stepped in to save the day? That sorted the wheat from the chaff, didn’t it?

        • Once you guys get rollin you’re just too much. :D

Best of luck 790™. Maybe I’ll make a satirical short to fund Navi… ;)

  25. I enjoyed Predators. But like some of my friends, i didnt see the point of them of saying they wanted the film to intend to ignore the AVP films. From what i read IMDB, in a way, the AVP films could still excist in the same universe because they’re referenced in Predators. And even Predator 2 wasnt referenced as the filmmakers of Predators have said as i read, Predators is intended to follow both Predator & Predator 2. While the AVP films could very well taken place. Makes sence with the kind of plot Predators had after the events of AVP-R, and taken humans off Earth to hunt and they dont rish any technology of their doesnt fall into mankind’s hands again. Besides the AVP films were mostly cross over films that also served as sequels to predator franchise while serving as prequels to alien franchise. We did see dead creatures the predators hunted in the film, just not live ones which they should show in the next film perhaps. Id like to see of the classic predators in their conflict with the others. Lol seems like they’re have to make the movie little longer. One question i have is, i wonder if Arnold seen Predators and what he thought of it?

    • He has detailed files… :-)

      • i hope he stays away from acting once he is out of office, its bad enough he acted as a governor

        • Has he mentioned anything about acting in film again? Lol People must really hate him out there if they dont wanna see him on film anymore.

          • well what else can he do? he can do politics for a living, he cant run for president…he continues to butcher the english language lol

            • Go with him if you want to live!

  26. Lol i meant to say AVP films weren’t referenced in Predators in above message.

  27. The original was much better than this reboot unless your 18 yrs old and don’t remember the original from 1987

    • Of course the original will never be surpassed…but Predators was very enjoyable from a fans standpoint.

      • Of course, you never look at a ‘jack in the box’ the same way twice! You could equal it, but to exceed it, is very difficult. It’s the same story for “Alien” or even “Terminator.” Every time you do one on a regular basis, every few years, it gets increasingly difficult. So you get escalation, everything gets bigger and sooner or later it gets bigger than the imagination behind it. Serious new dynamics need to be created to take the story further. Mystery setups with satisfying solutions need to be generated. Perhaps interlocking character stories could be the answer? My guess is though that the Predators story, their history, will end up as narrative. Much of it has been done that way thus far already. Anyway I was disappointed that Edwin wasn’t skewered like Bishop by an Alien, when he and Isabelle were in the pit. I think that could have been a good jack in the box moment.

  28. The next movie should be about a Predator that gets captured by government people while he’s hunting on earth. Then the next 80 monutes of the movie is it escaping and kicking whole sale @$$ on any human that gets in his way.

Sure it would suck as a movie, but it would be kick @$$!!!!!!

    • Yes an excellent first post here, welcome. An interesting challenge is to make the reacquiring of the Predator’s gear by the alien interesting and authentic. In that situation I’m concluding that he’s deep in a government facility and if that’s the case, then their would be a pretty short time between capture, lockdown of the alien, and the divestment of his gear to different research facilities. Definitely a popcorn flick worth watching ‘R’ rated and good opportunities for healthy blood letting…

      • Jake Busey could go the same way as his dad in that one.

    • Maybe even have some of his friends help him break out…

Speaking of always refferring to the predator as “him”, we should see what a female predator looks like in a sequel… Anyone?

  29. I like that idea Pikachu on this.
