alien vs predator 2 Predators Start Date Announced

A couple of months ago it was announced that a director had been found for the upcoming Predators reboot/sequel in the form of Nimrod Antal. The Vacancy director was just one of many that was in the running to direct the highly sought-after project, with another notable naming being The Descent helmer, Neil Marshall (who I, and many other fans, strongly favored).

With Robert Rodriguez on-board to produce (he was also rumored to be directing at one point), Antal on-board to direct, and Alex Litvak and Michael Finch having written it, it looks like Predators is definitely on the way. And now Production Weekly is reporting a shooting start date (and location) for the film: September 28th, 2009 at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

Predators is being said to be about a “very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors – that are not always from outside their group.” Sounds like it’s putting a new spin on the franchise but at the same time keeping the spirit of the original – I’m sure fans will agree that’s a good thing.

I’m still not sure about Antal directing the film, though. As I’ve said before, he showed some talent for tension with the Kate Beckinsale/Luke Wilson thriller, Vacancy, a couple of years ago, but that movie doesn’t exactly show that he would do the Predator franchise the justice it deserves. I much would have preferred Neil Marshall to direct, just because his resume (The Descent, Dog Soldiers and Doomsday) seems a lot more suited to Predators.

However, I’m willing to give Antal the benefit of the doubt for now. What about you?

As stated, Predators is (apparently) to start filming on September 28th, 2009, and is slated for a release on July 7th, 2010.

  1. It’s called Predators? lol this will not be anything close to Aliens.

  2. I still can’t get over Rodriguez not directing, he’s one of my favorite directors

  3. One of the greatest things to see out of the Aliens/Predator movies was the Predator home planet(i assume that was there home planet) in Requiem. I think because it was so short it made it so much better, but a whole movie set on the planet, idk alot could go wrong. Rodriquez is one of my favorite directors as well Huggybear and i agree with you totally Ross about Neil Marshall over Nimrod Antal cuz lets just say it Dog Soldiers is one the best if not THE best werewolf movie ever made. But i’ll wait to pass judgement on Antal until i see his new movie (Armored)in December.

  4. Id also prefer some marshal or some one else over Antal to direct predators, because well vacancy was boring.

Dog Soldiers is one of the best, but not the best. Its between An American Werewolf in London and The Howling.

  5. Dog Soldiers proves that Marshall can do a Predator film because all you have to do is exchange those werewolves with Predators and voila!

  6. To be perfectly frank, after having seen both The Descent and Doomsday, I think I would skip a Predator movie directed by the same director. Those two films were probably the biggest film disappointments for me of the last 20 years.

  7. So they’re filming in little over a month, and no news on the cast yet?

  8. @ Mike E

Yeh doomsday was a bit ho hum aside from Rhona Mitra, but it was gory. The Descent got a bad rap i think because it came out right after The Cave because they were so similar.

  9. Hmmmm. Not sure about this one. I LOVE the franchise and all, but it seems as if milking this particular one into the ground is going to end up eventually spawning a bunch of straight to DVD sequels, which basically spells DEATH for a franchise. Always been a fan of Predator AND the Alien monsters. Just wish the directors of the originals would jump back in after so many sequels. For example, to have Ridley Scott and/or James Cameron to come back in and give the Alien franchise another try would be BEYOND cool, just as having John McTiernan to give “Predators” a shot would be glorious.

  10. I’ve got a feeling that this will turn out just another average stinker. let’s hope rodriguez has some decent input into the script.

  11. So I wonder when is this story set? Far enough in the future for mankind to have achieved interstellar travel, or are these humans hitching a ride? Seems like an idea I had a few years back for what the first Aliens vs Predators should have looked like. They seem so below the curve story wise it’s frustrating…

  12. I’m gonna see this because i have enjoyed both predator movies\ and the AVP movies.

Someone wrote about how they liked seeing the predators home planet, as did i.

  13. “Those two films were probably the biggest film disappointments for me of the last 20 years” – pmsl… were they the ONLY 2 films you’ve seen in the past 20 yrs? I can think of many, MANY more than have been far worse, I think perhaps you’re being a liiiitle over dramatic eh? :)

I love the Predator franchise but it’ll take a lot to recover from the 2 AvP “mistakes”… jus keep on rapin that franchise till something good comes out of it!
