Predator Reboot Shane Black New Predator by Iron Man 3 Director Shane Black in the Works [Updated]

[UPDATE: According to Shane Black, the film will be a sequel, not a reboot.]

Movie remakes and reboots are (unfortunately) a standard part of the business these days – and it seems like no property is too sacred to be meddled with. And yet, after years of some lackluster reboot films, we have, admittedly, seen more and more reboots that actually manage to follow our rules for redux success, offering a different or exciting spin on a property we thought we knew. 21 Jump Street, Dredd and Rise of the Planet of the Apes are examples of some recent reboots that managed to justify their recycling of old intellectual properties – with films like The Equalizer and Terminator Genesis offering at least the hope that future reboots will be just as worthwhile.

…Then again, there are plenty of reboots that fail for one reason or another (Dredd), and there are also films that we consider SO sacred that they should not be meddled with at all. In that latter category we would place classic films like Casablanca or The Godfather – but also an action movie classic like Predator. Now, much to our collective horror, it’s being reported that Predator is indeed getting a reboot (a bullet we thought we dodged last year), with the story being crafted by none other than Iron Man 3 director, Shane Black.

THR dropped the news that 21st Century Fox has tapped Black to reboot Predator. To be specific, Black will handle the treatment for the project, and then hand actual scripting duties to Fred Dekker, who is best known for writing/directing late ’80s/early ’90s cult films like Robocop 3 and The Monster Squad  – which itself was almost remade a few years back. Black and Dekker (the Hollywood guys, not the tool parts company) have strong collaboration history; they co-wrote Monster Squad together, which has got to count for something (and does, at least in our book). On his own, Black has history with the Predator franchise: it’s a not-so-secret story that as young screenwriting prodigy (Lethal Weapon), he was given a small role in the original 1987 film as attempted bribery for him to polish the script. (See him in the cast photo below standing behind Schwarzenegger’s right side.)

Scene from the 2010 reboot, ‘Predators’

No details yet on exactly how the studio plans to reboot the franchise – but it certainly is a looming question. After two installments in the late ’80s era (touching 1990, if we’re getting technical) – and slogging through Aliens vs. Predator films during the early to mid-2000s – the Predator franchise got its best shot at new life with the Robert Rodriguez-produced Predators in 2010. That film was supposed to be a hard reboot of the franchise, and soon after its modest reception ($127 million worldwide on a $40 million budget) there was serious talk of a Predators sequel. Four years later and it’s obvious that Predators 2 lost all momentum – so what’s the game plan to make this Shane Black reboot more enticing?

With Black teaming with another ’80s/90s veteran – not to mention John Davis, a producer on the original film – it seems that this time, there’s going to be an attempt to recapture the nostalgia of the first film. Does that mean bringing back Arnold Schwarzenegger in some capacity? Wouldn’t be surprised if it did. Beyond that, a Christmas setting is about the only bet we can make right now (Black loves to set his films during the holidays).

Predator 1987 Cast 1024x574 New Predator by Iron Man 3 Director Shane Black in the Works [Updated]

The original cast (L to R): Ventura, Black, Schwarzenegger, Duke, Weathers, Landham and Chaves

After Iron Man 3, however, there is going to be no end to the barrage of jokes fans are going to toss at this new Predator project. For as much money as IM3 made, hardcore fans were less than thrilled with some of the… “liberties” that Black took with the material. “So what, we going to find out that the Predator wasn’t a REAL alien – just a junky English actor in a body suit?” Yep, we can already hear the jokes spreading across the Interwebs…

Bottom line, though: Predator is one of the last movies from my younger years that I still carve out time to watch nearly every time I catch it on TV. For nearly all of my thirty-two years of life, it’s been there to bring me entertainment and pleasure on some of the most dreary, lazy, sickly, or boring days. Never once have I wished to have an updated version to replace the jungle misadventures of Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Bill Duke, Jesse Ventura, Sonny Landham, Richard Chaves and Kevin Peter Hall in the Predator suit – and I’m probably not alone in saying that I haven’t started wishing for that change in recent years. In my eyes, this reboot is facing a steep uphill climb to relevancy and/or appreciation.

We’ll keep you updated on the status of the Predator reboot.

  1. Two things.

    1. Sequelize it and have The Rock team with an aging Arnold.

    2. Erase all evidence of the aweful, mongoloid “Super Predators”. Classic or GET OUT. Didn’t work with Spinosaurus and doesn’t work here. +1 is lazy as…

    • I totally agree with you!!!

These guys are lame, why reboot a Clasic Like the First predator, reboot predator 2 and predators.

Predators was so awful, i just think that people were happy seeing the predators on film.

    • Know what else doesn’t work? Half of the movies that Dwayne Johnson is in.

      • This is easy, you take expendables movies and have them go to war with the predators boom!!! instant movie success

        • Dude…IM ALL ABOUT THIS

  2. So will it take place on CHRISTMAS?

    • It wouldn’t really make sense, since Predators hunt during the hottest summers, at least according to Predator 1 and 2.

      • That wasnt true according to Comic book cannon….I think it was just their own limited knowledge. The comics had Predators hunting in russia and alaska.

        • Whose limited knowledge? The character of Predator was first introduced in the 1987 FILM, not in the comics.
In that film, it is said that Predator only comes to hunt during the hottest summers – if that isn’t true canon, then I don’t know what is.

  3. I wouldn’t mind Arnold coming back as an advisor. Sort of like Aliens. Gets roped in and has to help the younger star whoop some @$$.

  4. I’ve been a serious Predator fan my entire life. Was then thoroughly dissapointed in anything cinematic that had to do with bringing them into the Alien universe (although I do think the idea is awesome). I have yet to be fulfilled with any adaptations brought to screen. Still, I would Totally watch a reboot if they did it. Say, would there be any room in there for Megan Fox? Haha *Jokes*

  5. Its apparent that the fans are not the only ones who were not impressed with his mockery of the
    Mandarin because
    1. All hail the king brought back possibly the return of the real mandarin after pearce and black
swore up and down during im3 release that he was not real.
    2. Black must need another directing job because why would he agree to a reboot on a film
He starred in and also had a hand in writing.
    3. Total recall reboot failed, terminator salvation failed, and every predator film failed without arnold
has failed which says one thing, that the fans only believe that arnold is only one capable of
    Owning these characters.

    • Predator franchise has done extremely well without Arnold…I think most people who saw Predator hoped arnold would die at the end instead of Predator.

  6. And lets not forget jason momoa’s conan was another huge failure. While scharwznegger box
Office mojo non existent at moment, but he made all those roles iconic to his image.

  7. please no. he should not be allowed to do anything after what he did to the mandarin.

  8. no I hope they keep the predator film separate from Prometheus 2 I was just saying it would be interesting for both films to show female versions of both races.

    • +1

  9. i’m very interested in this. ‘Predator’ is one of my top 10 all time fave films, so, i hope it will be good. and i hope it will have a adult rating. plus The Rock would be perfect as Dutch

  10. “Then again, there are plenty of reboots that fail for one reason or another (Dredd)”

Oh come on, if this reboot is anything like Dredd, it will be awesome.

    • LIKE!!!!!

  11. They should have left hawkins body in that tree

  12. Kevin Peter Hall was the Classic Predator standing at 7 feet tall. Changing that format was horrible for the franchise.

Use the guy that played the Greyish/blue Albino in Prometheus

Or someone in the NBA looking for a side job

As far as Shane Black and as Horrible as Iron Man 3 was (regardless of how much money it made at the box office. Fans were still disappointed)., Even Joss Wheden was like WTF at the end of it.

Someone needs to micro manage that dude with this film and stay close to the source material

    • That person should NOT be Fred Dekker. I didn’t even think that guy was allowed near a movie after Robocop 3.

  13. After IM3, I’m boycotting Shane Black movies just like I boycott M. Night Shyamalan movies after The Last Airbender. They both ruined things that had the potential to be great and were two of my favorite characters.

    • I’m sincerely glad two of your favorite characters were ruined for you.

  14. “21 Jump Street, Dredd and Rise of the Planet of the Apes are examples of some recent reboots that managed to justify their recycling of old intellectual properties” and “Then again, there are plenty of reboots that fail for one reason or another (Dredd)” make your mind up or even have an opinion of your own!

    • You’re not reading (or quoting) that in context. Kofi is saying that Dredd was a worthy reboot of old material, and is generally praised by it’s target audience as being superior to the first Stallone movie in every way. But it didn’t bring in $$$ at the box office, so it failed at the box office “for one reason or another.”

  15. I prefer Dredd over the Sly Stallone’s Judge Dredd

  16. At this point they might as well do Expendables vs. Predator.

    • How does that even make sense? You say “at this point they might as well…” as if the thought of a Predator reboot is so outlandish of a thought that Expendables vs. Predator is within the same realm of ideas. AvP was more outlandish than a straight reboot of the Predator franchise.

And making Expendables vs. Predator is one of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard 1) because audiences expect the Predator to kill people and the Expendables refuse to die in their movies and 2) because The Expendables franchise already has Arnold in it and he’s not Dutch.

  17. Predator is a classic and nothing they’ll do will match it.

They can try and do sequels or spin offs (I found Predators a honest attempt and better than Danny Glover’s Predator 2), but there is no need for a hard reboot and revisiting the jungle story again.

    • It seems like what you’re saying would make a lot more sense if the word “reboot” was replaced with “remake”.

      • Both. There is no need for a reboot or a remake. They can keep telling as much stories as they want about Predators keeping that first movie as canon. There is a whole planet with these creatures they can use.

Replace the “and” in my original post for “and/or” and that clears it up. That’s what I meant.

    • +1

  18. I guess they need one more nail in that coffin….

  19. If they’re going to do it right, they need to bring back Arnold and even find the asian girl actress who was rescued at the end, seeing as they’re the only survivors who know how a Predator acts on earth. It would be really awesome to have a sort of flashback or nod to files that Dutch gives the government as far as his synopsis of the events and the descriptions of weaponry wielded by the original Predator. Maybe the summer is growing hot and it’s time for the Predators to come back again to take their trophies. Then again, maybe they got smart once one of them was successfully killed by a human, or huMANS, if you include Danny Glover.

It would be great to see him advise a jungle rescue from a new group of Predators.

    • I’m assuming you are ignoring the existence of Predator 2, correct?

    • Arnold died in a military holding cell (no one belived his story and that he killed his team) due to radiation poisoning according to the synopsis for the Original ending of Predator.

I wonder how they will handle this…I dont want to see Arnold come back in any capacity unless hes trapped as some trophy on the Predator homeworld (like in a zoo setting) lol.

My favorite part of Predators was that humans in some capacity survived on a Predator Game reserve somewhere in the far reaches of AVP galaxy lol.

  21. Im probably one of the only Predator fans that enjoyed Predator 2 & Aliens vs Predator. I really enjoyed the risks taken to show that Look…Predators hunt in all climates, in all Terrains and Predators greatest foe is still…surprise surprise…Aliens.

I bet most people wouldn’t even know that juvenile predators sent to earth haven’t even fought Aliens yet…hunting humans is at the bottom of the barrel…anyways. Would love to see the Predators hunting on other planets and the Predator home world…if you cant show me that s*** then what is the point of it all????

Bringing absolutely nothing new to the table will not help the franchise grow. All you get is something similar to jurassic park 2 or 3…which is basically just more of the same.

  22. Fred Dekker killed Robocop. He killed the franchise, spit on it, lit it on fire, pissed on it, threw gas on it and burned it again. Robocop 3 is one of the worst movies I’ve ever attempted to sit through. Anything Fred Dekker is attached to, I will avoid like the plague. Was not impressed with Shane Black on IM3 either. I don’t hate IM3, but there is just too much stuff that is glaringly wrong, and someone else would have given us a better Iron Man than Black.

    • Calm down…stop yelling. We dont even know if its a reboot yet. Lets give shane the benefit of the doubt. hes the best person (IMO) to handle a quasi reboot/sequel. I mean hell he helped write much of the first one.

Shane black is much more familiar with Predator then Iron Man. I for one think that hes really gonna give us an awesome movie.

  24. You know, outside of Iron Man 3 Shane black doesnt really have any stinkers…Lethal Weapon, Long kiss goodnight, kiss kiss bang bang. Iron Man 3 isnt a terrible movie, its actually one of the better comic book movies…Its just not a good Iron Man movie.

I think People need to Cut Shane Black a break, I dont want a reboot…obviously Fox hasnt learned their lesson. But I trust that Shane doesnt want to ruin a legendary movie that he helped write & star in. Im gonna give SB the benefit of the doubt untill I actually see the movie.

And I fully support anything Aliens & Predators…we fans really have not been as blessed as fans of other comic book properties.

Ok my thoughts on a reboot:

Fans arent stupid…Fox has given us soooo much movie cannon. Dont treat us like dummies who have never seen these movies…Predator & aliens vs predator are on TV at least once a week.

Dont try to reinvent the wheel…please for the love of God…stick to what we know.

Predator 2 failed…because of Danny Glover, the concept was awesome. but Danny at 50 years old was no Arnold.

Stop trying to make your hero like Arnold.

Stop making rip offs…one dimensional characters of the first crew.

We dont need twists we need solid Sci Fi horror…thats all I can think of for now.

  25. I can see a reboot if the original doesn’t hold up but the original DOES. The FX really can’t be improved upon (Advanced CGI ain’t gonna make it better) so this is nothing but a cash grab. Hollywood has basically given up trying.

  26. Boy you people are something else.
Most of you can’t wait to hate on any movie if you’ve seen a previous iteration of it.

I for one would not really care for a reboot of Predator but your hatred of the sequels that followed I think are unwarranted.
AVP was a VERY good story plot to add to both Predator and Alien properties.

What I think Hollywood needs to do is if they want to keep going with a particular property, stop rebooting them and just make adjustments as they go but keep the continuity and add new stories.

Case in point. They had a good Spider-Man but felt they had to reboot it and it didn’t need that it just needed new stories.

Green Lantern wasn’t too bad either it just needed adjusting from there forward.
Reynolds Jordan character was a little too gung-ho and unsure through most of the movie not like the Jordan I remember from the comics who was way more serious but we saw the glimmer of that in the end. So they should have just went with that forward.

The original Batman was ok too although a little campy for me but that’s not what Burton was trying for (the campiness). That was WB’s fault.
Then came Nolan/Bale with brooding grit and got it right as evidenced by profits and public reception.

Anyway what they need to do is when they’ve got a decent movie that pulls in enough profit and the fans like then just keep moving forward with it.
    Stop with all the restarts.

  27. what this movie needs is to be set in space and we need some colonial marines

I know im crossing franchises but those AVP games were cool

nuke from orbit only way to be sure

  28. I want to see a Predator battling a pack of Jurassic Park velociraptors!
