A set of new character posters has been released for the second season of AMC’s Preacher. The show had a successful first season and although fans of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s original comic series may not have been totally happy with how far the television adaptation strayed from the source material, the show was profitable enough to warrant a second season. The series was perhaps primarily praised for its bleakly comic tone and some fantastic performances from the likes of Joseph Gilgun and Ruth Negga.
While the first season largely took place in Jesse Custer’s home state of Texas, season two promises to be a more expansive affair since Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy are heading out on a road trip to find God who – according to the angels of Heaven – has gone AWOL. Meanwhile, the mysterious Saint of Killers will seemingly have a more prominent role to play after being released from hell to hunt down and kill Custer.
In new series of posters (via Nerdist) the five central figures of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga), Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), The Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish) and Eugene “Arseface” Root (Ian Colletti) are depicted. Each poster features a bright, retro visual style with a fiery red and orange palette that gives the impression things will be getting hellish for these five characters.
The inclusion of Arseface in the poster set is particularly interesting as the character was previously sent to hell – accidentally, mind you – by Jesse Custer in season one. He made a number of appearances as a hallucination in latter episodes but the character’s mortal soul is still suffering eternal damnation as far as viewers know. His presence here, however, suggests that the the Saint of Killers isn’t the only man who may be making the a topside trip from hell.
As mentioned previously, the first season of Preacher did attract criticism from some quarters due to the differences between the TV adaptation and the comic source material. Essentially, the series acts as a prequel to the comics and showcases Custer’s regular, everyday life as a preacher far more than was explored on the page.
However, it does appear as if season two is finally getting ready to delve into the source material proper with the central trio’s journey to find God now starting and the emergence of the Saint of Killers also in motion. The new posters further this assumption, with the characters looking slightly more akin to their comic counterparts and the retro vibe harking back to the 90s when the comic was first published.
Preacher season two premieres June 25th on AMC.
