Season 1 of AMC's Preacher certainly featured its fair share of crazy characters taken straight from the pages of the comic book, but there were actually a lot more characters showrunner Sam Catlin wanted to introduce who had to be left out. For season 2, Catlin is getting a chance to bring in more of his favorite faces from the comics, including the villainous Herr Starr, who will have a major role in the story.

Preacher season 2 sees our heroes heading out on a road trip that brings them eventually to New Orleans, where much of the season's action will be set. Catlin says Preacher season 2 will expand on smaller episodes from the comics and overall will be closer in feel to Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s original works.

In an interview with EW, Catlin talked about a few of the new characters the show will bring in from the comics to help achieve the requisite level of insanity:

“We bring in all sorts of crazy characters from the comic that we had to really restrain ourselves from bringing in too early in season 1. So that’s been a lot of fun.”

Herr Starr Preacher

A major figure in Season 2 will be Herr Starr (Pip Torrens), a humorously malevolent killer who leads a mysterious organization called The Grail (he was briefly glimpsed in Season 1 as the "man in white"). Catlin said:

“He’ll be a big part of the season and he’ll be a big part of Jesse’s life going forward. That was a character that, as soon as I read the comic the first time, I loved him so much. Obviously, we couldn’t wait to bring him out and give him his due.”

Catlin says season 2 will also include Starr's associates Featherstone and Hoover, played respectively by Julie Ann Emery (Better Call Saul) and Malcolm Barrett (Timeless). In the comics, Starr and his henchmen hunt down Jesse Custer but things go wrong as Starr has his ear shot off by Tulip, and then mistakenly captures Cassidy instead of Custer. Cassidy is brutally tortured by The Grail, and Custer goes running to save his friend. This is when the Saint of Killers enters the story, and actually helps Jesse escape.

The Saint of Killers is also going to be a big part of Preacher season 2, after getting his big intro in season 1, but it remains to be seen how much of the insane comic book storyline involving him, Starr, Custer, Cassidy and Tulip will actually make it into the show. We do know that season 2 is set to feature a ton of action and gore, and loads of outrageous road-tripping humor.
