Many children’s television series beloved by those who grew up in the ‘80s, ‘90s, and early ‘00s have received reboots and revivals in the past year. First, The Disney Channel announced a spinoff series from Boy Meets World titled Girl Meets World that would focus on main characters’ Cory and Topanga’s daughter, Riley. More recently, LeVar Burton launched a Kickstarter to bring Reading Rainbow to a new generation of kids and a reboot of The Magic School Bus will debut on Netflix in 2016.

Now, Cartoon Network’s successful and beloved superhero trio, The Powerpuff Girls, is the most recent children’s property to receive a revival.

According to The Wrap, Rob Sorcher, Chief Content Officer at Cartoon Network, announced that an updated version of The Powerpuff Girls will debut on the children’s entertainment network in 2016. The Powerpuff Girls is one of Cartoon Network’s most financially successful brands, grossing more than $2.5 million in retail sales since its premiere in 1998.

Created by Craig McCracken (Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends), the original series ran for six seasons - and won two Emmy Awards - until it was canceled in 2005. Earlier this year, Cartoon Network aired an original television special starring redesigned versions of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup titled The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed.

Pete Yoder, vice president of consumer products for North America Cartoon Network Enterprises, said of the reboot:

As the original ambassador of ‘girl power,’ 'The Powerpuff Girls' brand continues to resonate with people of all ages and there is tremendous excitement around introducing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to a new generation. With proven success and great content plans in place, there's so much potential that we're looking forward to explore with our licensing partners in the coming weeks.

It’s no wonder The Powerpuff Girls continue to resonate with audiences of all ages considering the lack of female-led superhero content on the big and small screens. Despite the outcry from fans wanting a solo superheroine movie - or at least a superhero flick in which a woman has top billing - no such film has been officially scheduled by any of the major studios.

Although DC and Warner Bros are rumored to have a Wonder Woman film scheduled for 2017 and a Black Widow solo film has been talked about as a possibility via Marvel, neither studio has officially announced dates for their respective superheroine flicks. Similarly, a rumor about Jennifer Lawrence starring in a solo Mystique movie hit the web prior to the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The television side is a bit brighter, though, with Marvel TV debuting Agent Carter on ABC this winter, and a Jessica Jones-centered one-season show on Netflix in the coming years. Now, in 2016, The Powerpuff Girls will join their ranks.

With less female superheroes than male superheroes - and even fewer superheroine teams - on TV, a reboot of The Powerpuff Girls may appeal to fans of all ages as Yoder suggested. Additionally, perhaps it will give proof that the recipe for a successful female superhero franchise is as simple as Professor Utonium’s: sugar, spice, and everything nice - with a dash of Chemical X.
