[Warning, this article contains possible SPOILERS for Saban’s Power Rangers.]

Saban’s reboot of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers franchise, aptly titled Saban’s Power Rangers, represents a major retooling of the franchise. As recent pictures and updates from filming have emerged, fans are getting a taste of the new cast, the costume designs, and Elizabeth Banks’ turn as Rita Repulsa. In the new film, the revamped Rita, returning from the original series and the first film, has a new look herself – one that’s turning heads.

Although little is known about the global menace she'll pose in the film, aside from what Banks and the crew have shared, some interesting fan theories have emerged.

As they often do, the latest fan theory has emerged from Reddit. Redditor The_AtomBomb posits that, due to the striking similarity between the battered and torn outfit Repulsa wears in the film and a full-outfitted Power Ranger, the otherworldly antagonist has a deeper connection to the team in the film. The theory further suggests that Rita was once the Green Power Ranger. The redditor even included a side-by-side shot of Repulsa next to a green-tinted version of the Pink Ranger. Take a look for yourself.

Power Rangers: An Interesting Theory About Rita

Although far-fetched, the theory does have some merit, considering what we know at this point. Banks herself said that the dastardly Ms. Repulsa has “a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.” Initial reports on the reboot also indicated the presence of a possible prologue which explains the a prior history between Ranger-leader Zordon and the villainess. Further theory fodder comes from the Power Ranger film's costume designer, Andrew Menzies (Fury), who stated that the costumes are not mere armored garb. Instead, they’re an “alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made.”

Keep in mind that, although The_AtomBomb’s idea is intriguing, until further details are revealed by the producers, it’s nothing more than a hypothesis. The user’s theory does make some sense, though, given the similarities between the new uniform designs and Rita’s new look. If Rita, said to be "a striking, yet subtly alien-looking woman," and the costumes are both alien in origin, we could infer that the Power Rangers powers and their boss, Zordon, will once again come from beyond the stars (as he did in the series). If the theory is true, it could add new layers to the film, and create a more interesting backstory for the character than emerging from a space dumpster (as left-field fun as that was).

However, in the original series, Rita and Zordon were ancient enemies. If the reboot retains this element of the television show's storyline, it would cast-aside this fan suppositioin. It is possible Repulsa could have served in a long-ago version of the Power Rangers before turning against Zordon and being exiled. One thing’s for sure, it will be interesting to find out if this theory holds any water.

Power Rangers opens in U.S. theaters on March 24, 2017.
