In less than two years there will be a new, big budget movie reboot of Power Rangers in theaters. Are you ready? Lionsgate, makers of hit film franchises Divergent (under their Summit Entertainment label) and The Hunger Games certainly are, and they're hoping to launch a new franchise in the summer blockbuster season by teaming up with Saban, creators of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series.

The franchise began in 1993 and every year since, there's been a new season of Power Rangers, each usually featuring a different cast and theme. On July 22, 2016, we'll meet another group of young individuals in a re-envisioned take on the property with a big budget film executive produced by Roberto Orci (Star Trek 3). Don't worry, he already promised not to "ruin" it and actually teased a good idea. Also producing are Brian Casentini, Allison Shearmur and creator Haim Saban.

We first learned that Lionsgate and Saban were partnering to launch a new film franchise based on the Power Rangers three months ago, and in the weeks since screenwriting duo Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz were penning the script. Their previous works together include Thor, X-Men: First Class and they're also working on the upcoming Starship Troopers reboot.

Power Rangers Reboot screenwriter rumors

Official Power Rangers movie synopsis:

From a story by Executive Producer Roberto Orci (TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, THOR) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.

All jokes aside, there's absolutely strong potential for an all-ages Power Rangers film that drops the camp factor of the older seasons of the series in exchange for a more realistic world, real characters, better action and weapons, tech and mechs that look real. They'll have the money to do it this time and they're bringing in proven blockbuster film talent to get the ball rolling.

With a July 22, 2016 release date, Power Rangers finds itself competing directly against Warner Bros.' King Arthur on the same weekend. July is a typically a busy summer month and moviegoers will also have Independence Day 2, an unannounced film from Marvel (we guess Doctor Strange), Universal's Bourne 5 and the third Planet of the Apes film from Fox all in theaters around the same time.

Production will need to begin early next year to meet its release date and with a continuous stream of official announcements in just three months, expect casting announcements and a director selection later this year.
