Step aside, The Avengers. Sit yourselves down, Guardians of the Galaxy. A new team of heroes is making a comeback on the big screen as part of the current trend of resurrecting nostalgic TV shows/toy lines established by the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises. Earlier this year it was announced that Power Rangers, the classic tale of expert teen martial artists taking on the nefarious forces of the galaxy in order to defend Earth, is making a comeback in a new big screen reboot from Lionsgate and Saban Brands.

The original series, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, ran for three seasons (plus two feature films) before continuing with a new show title for each season - all the way from Power Rangers Zeo to the upcoming Power Rangers Dino Charge. Keeping track of a franchise that has been ongoing for over two decades can be a little tricky, but for those who want to brush up on their facts, the ongoing video series History of Power Rangers provides a fairly comprehensive guide.

Any movie - reboots included - runs the risk of getting stuck in development hell, but it looks like Power Rangers hasn't lost its momentum yet. THR reports that Roberto Orci (Star Trek) has boarded the project as executive producer, and that Power Rangers will be scripted by X-Men: First Class screenwriters Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. In addition to his producing role, Orci will also develop the story alongside Miller and Stentz.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers perfected the art of epic giant mechs vs. giant monster battles long before Pacific Rim came along (admittedly the special effects weren't quite as impressive), and given the fact that the core of the franchise is teenagers being gifted with incredible powers that they must use to defend the planet, it makes sense that Lionsgate would want to bring some superhero movie talent onboard.

Miller and Stentz previously collaborated with Orci on the sci-fi series Fringe, and the screenwriting duo also co-wrote the screenplay for Thor with Don Payne, and scripted episodes of Andromeda and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Power Rangers certainly fits with their area of expertise, and their involvement makes for a promising start to the movie's development.

The next important step, of course, is to hire someone to record a new version of the classic Mighty Morphin Power Rangers theme tune. If at all possible, that person should be Trent Reznor.

We'll keep you updated on Power Rangers as development continues.
