The Putties may, at long last, pose a genuine threat to the Power Rangers. For years now, Rita Repulsa's hench-aliens have been nothing but - in pro-wrestling terms - glorified jobbers. They show up, annoy the civilians before the Power Rangers show up to kick their alien butt in quick fashion. Rinse and repeat. Now Rita's alien minions are finally getting a major upgrade in Saban's Go Go Power Rangers comic book series, or at least one of them is.  Boom! Studios has released some new covers and details on the upcoming issue of the comic book and it looks like we'll be getting a shape-shifting Putty.

Putty, also known as Putty Patrollers, are footsoldiers formed out of clay, used by the vile Rita Repulsa. Right up to the third issue there has only been one type of Putty. These Putties are created by Rita and used as pawns to fight the Power Rangers. However, Putties may also be sacrificed and used as clay building materials. (You know, just in case Rita needed a cup to pour her morning coffee.) However, in a recent turn of events, it looks like fans of this comic book will be getting a human shape-shifting putty that will not only be able to look like humans, but also think like one too.

In these comics, the Putties have previously shown minor abilities to shapeshift. However, their transformations have been mostly limited to something random and weird, like a scary clown. This upgrade has the potential to add much-needed depth and thrills to this sometimes stale franchise. If Rita's minions are just there to get their butt kicked like they always have, the action scenes between the Rangers and these minions are void of any tension. With the ability to shapeshift, though, things may be different. Rita can summon one of her Putties to mask as one of the Rangers to gather information. The Putties can also transform into the Rangers' family members and find out deep personal secrets about them. The new Go Go Power Rangers issue will also come with many stylish covers, which include the fan-favorite locker series that centers around Kimberly Hart, the Pink Ranger.

According to Morphin Legacyeven Go Go Power Rangers writer Ryan Parrott loves these covers. He says:

Are you kidding? The locker ones themselves changed how I wrote the book. I actually have a folder on my desktop that, whenever I get stuck -- I open it, look at what's in their lockers and go -- oh yeah, that's who these characters are. They're all pretty amazing.
