While 2017 might seem far away, the new Power Rangers movie has not delayed in announcing their new cast members. The assembling of the new Power Rangers team has been quick with casting announcements being by Lionsgate/Saban of late – and today, they have announced their Blue Ranger, too.
Over the past two weeks (at the time of writing this), the new Power Rangers movie has already set three members of the new Rangers team: the Pink Ranger (Naomi Scott), the Red Ranger (Dacre Montgomery), and the Black Ranger (Ludi Lin). All three of these actors, as you no doubt noticed, are lesser-known talents, in keeping with previous rumors about director Dean Israelite’s (Project Almanac) planned approach to casting the film.
The announcement was made on the Power Rangers Twitter and Instagram accounts, welcoming RJ Cyler (who broke-out this year with his role in the acclaimed indie film Me and Early and the Dying Girl) as the Blue Ranger in this new Rangers movie:
Presumably, the next Power Rangers (2017) movie announcement will be for the film’s Yellow Ranger. Considering that the last three announcements have been made within a day of each other, expect to be hearing news of the Yellow Ranger fairly soon.
However, fans should be aware that the new Power Rangers team might not be a new version of the crew from the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV show; in fact, recent rumors have suggested the 2017 movie will follow the timeline of the most recent Power Rangers TV series, rather than be a reboot of the property . The current Power Rangers are the Dino Charge team, so the new squad could be following the events of their timeline.
With the possibility that the new Power Rangers team will not be the Mighty Morhpin team, could we be seeing a different team with more than five or six rangers? Considering that previous Power Rangers teams have featured Green, White, Gold, Purple, and even Graphite Rangers, who knows – maybe we’ll end up seeing more announcements than expected for Ranger casting in the film.
With the social media accounts of the Power Rangers acting swiftly with their announcements, more could be revealed soon – so stay tuned!
Power Rangers opens in U.S. theaters on January 13th, 2017.
