Daybreakers is an upcoming vampire film with a twist – the vampires are the majority, and the humans are the ones who live in fear and are hunted. It stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill, and today we have the Daybreakers teaser poster and full trailer for your viewing pleasure.

Before we get to the poster and trailer, here is the official synopsis for Daybreakers:
In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.
I don’t know about you but I think the plot for Daybreakers sound awesome. And thankfully so does the teaser poster and the trailer. Check them both out below:

I just love the way that the Daybreakers trailer is put together, as well as the general feel of it – very moody and dark but yet and still seems like a lot of fun (in the same way The Dark Knight was). The idea behind the movie is one of those that we’ve seen explored before in other vampire movies, but I really dig how this one clearly defines it: Humans are in the minority and vampires rule the world. As the trailer includes, the whole concept poses the idea that if the vampires continue to live off of human blood they will eventually eradicate the species, and in turn their own.
The Daybreakers poster is also very cool. However, is it just me or does it look startlingly similar to the poster designs for another vampire film, 30 Days of Night? If you can’t quite picture it, I’ve put the two movie’s posters side by side so you can decide for yourself how similar they are:

Great vampires apparently have more in common than just the need for blood.
I love genre movies that put a unique spin on what we’ve seen before, while introducing interesting ideas and raising questions along the way (The Canadian zombie film Ponytpool that I just saw recently also does this very effectively). I’d never really heard of Daybreakers before now, but it’s quickly made it’s way onto my most anticipated list.
Daybreakers is scheduled for a January 8th, 2010 release.

Oh my God! Really?! More vampires???
I’ve said it once. I’ve said it twice. I’ll say it again. VAMPIRES ARE TAKING OVER TELEVISION!!!!!
“We are the ones with the crossbows”, that alone would’ve been enough for me to go see it. Indeed, Dark Knightish, the plot also reminds me of ‘what do you get when you combine a standard vampire movie with The Matrix?’
That’s two more reasons to go. I’m not a big vampire movie fan, but this looks great.
DRAT! The trailer ends just when it starts! Sorry blasted network! I guess I’ll have to watch it when I get home.
First thing I thought when I saw this headline is “Not another vampire movie please”
Then I saw the trailer…
Holy crap. One of the few trailers that gave me goosebumps, especially when I heard Dafoe’s voice.
Looks freaking awesome. Might not be a 10/10 movie but as far as entertainment movie it looks like 11/10.
Great, great cast!
I’m freaking excited.
Thanks screen rant.
@ogb,
I did have thoughts of “Oh, ANOTHER one,” when I first started to watch the trailer. But the fact that the trailer rocks ass, plus the fact that vampires are pretty much my favourite kind of horror creatures, means I will always give them a shot (maybe that explains why I liked Twilight…).
Screw Twilight. Vampires still have spines in this world. I’m so going to go see this. My boyfriend will be so happy that this vamp film isn’t meaningless, romantic fluff.
Wow……how did my radar miss this one? I’m totally in!
All is right with the world! I was able to bring the trailer up and it does look awesome. And ditto to what LeeAnna said, no more tween-romantic-boring crap.
sounds like the the plot to the original novel “I am Legend”
Rats.
I just wrote a synopsis and ouline for a short story idea based on this exact thing.
My timing sucks.
Vampires have suffered from being stereotyped into “romantic” roles in the past few decades.
It’s fine when it’s done well but I prefer vampires to be badass. Blade 2, 30 Days of Night, those are my kind of vampires.
I like the evolution of vampires and zombies on screen, always fun to watch. We went from Romero’s stumbling corpses to Danny Boyle’s scary as f*ck, running zombies.
We also went from Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise seducing girls as vampires to some totally evil creatures of habit (lust for blood) in Blade.
And Ross, please don’t be offended, but I don’t think I like vampires enough to like Twilight lol. I haven’t seen it, maybe I’ll like it, but everything I’ve read/heard/seen about it makes me think otherwise.
@ogb,
Don’t worry, no offence taken
I know, I am in the minority with Twilight in these circles, but I have to be honest in my liking or not liking of a movie. I like my vampires to be badass as much as the next person, but something about Twilight I just liked.
Damn Ross,
Now I’m scared I’ll like Twilight too.
I just remember watching a recap of MTV movie awards and seeing Twilight beat Dark Knight, made me throw up in my mouth a little (I understand the circumstances are different for voting/judging, but still)
‘We’re the ones with the crossbows’
Nice!
No actually this DOESN’T look like the original “I Am Legend” book plot, it does though look like a half way interesting vampire movie which is far more than I can say for the majority of them as of late.
Ok. I’m a HUGE vampire fan but I prefer the anti-hero version. I thought Twilight was a visually beautiful movie but I felt older than Edward watching it. I must be long past the teen loves vampire romance phase and that’s very sad indeed. I still think Buffy and Angel the best teen/ancient vampire paring but I understand how people enjoy the romance of Twilight. It’s just not my thing.
So I dreaded viewing this trailer even though I liked who was cast. Wilem Defoe played the title character in Nosferato and now I guess he’s on the other side. He’s a great actor with a lot of range.
Anyhow, I was prepared to be disappointed but I too got chills watching the trailer and that song was perfect. I first heard it at the end of a Bones episode and it really set the mood. I’ll have to find out the artist now and buy it.
I does seem like a cross between I Am Legend and The Matrix but who cares so long as it’s good and this looks good. Can’t wait to see it. Thanks for the heads up!
Btw, what’s the name of the song in the trailer?
twilight jacked everything about vampires. this looks more like the vampires on Blade, and i like that. Might go see it, but then again…
@ogb,
It’s called “Running Up That Hill” by Placebo (originally sung by Kate Bush). Great band, great song.
Thanks Ross. Heard some good songs from Placebo. I’ll be getting this one for sure.
That looked awesome, I was pretty pleasantly surprised.
Running Up That Hill is on Placebo’s Meds album as well as the Bones soundtrack.
Meds is a really good album, btw. Loving it.
Killer trailer and story. Can’t wait to see it.
Anybody read ‘I Am Legend’? Excellent!
Too bad they didn’t follow Richard Matheson’s book when they did the Will Smith movie. It might have turned out like this only with a bigger budget.
For the year prior to ‘I Am Legend’ being released I was waiting to hear the word, ‘Vampire’ on sites like this one but alas, it was not to be.
It looks like the black and white Vincent Price version will be the only film adaptation that will nail the book.
Oh man, this looks awesome. I can’t wait!
finally a Decent Vampire movie, not one that Pre-teen Girls will be Screaming over.
Bring it back to what vampires are really about.
this pleases me.
so i got this to look forward to.
that and im undecided on the Re-make of “Fright night”, that was on an eairler Post.
but finally we get a good vampire centric movie.
or at least the Trailer looks great.
i can only hope the film will turn out well.
OMG an original idea from Hollywood…kinda.
It looks really cool. Kinda reminds me of Soylent Green/Matrix in some ways.
While I don’t really like Ethan Hawke as an Actor, some of the people in the movie are great… Defoe to name one!
I’m looking forward to it, because it’s kind of a Vampire movie with Zombieish factors through in![IE: very little humans, lot's of them.]
i am vampire
i’m vempire luljeta!who will read it be careful, cose i’m going to come on night and i’m going to eat u.and i will make all of u vempire!
Actually, the poster design is a complete rip-off of the book “If You Don’t Sleep, you Don’t Dream” by William Pauley III. Here is the link to the book’s artwork: http://www.webook.com/project/If-You-Dont-Sleep-You-Dont-Dream
