The boys of the satirical pop band The Lonely Island are back in full force in their directorial debut feature film Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, which is due out in theaters later this June. Having received their start on the small screen of Saturday Night Live, the new mockumentary comedy film stars frontman Andy Samberg as former rap group sensation Conner “Conner4Real” Friel, who is forced to reunite with his old musical outfit after sales on his second solo album prove to be less than chart topping.
Popstar will be co-directed by fellow Lonely Island bandmates Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer (who also co-write and co-star in the film with Samberg), with studio comedy stalwart Judd Apatow (Trainwreck) producing the entire affair. The first full-length trailer has already promised plenty of hilarious hijinks soon to come from the feature film proper, which is an intimation that can now be further attested to in the latest preview.
In the Popstar footage featured above, Samberg, Taccone, and Schaffer are at it again in several sequences depicting all-out musical hilarity. Paying obvious comic moments of tribute and sharply aimed satire at various aspects of the popular music industry, “Conner4Real” comes off like the hack talent that Samberg is obviously going for, all the while being backed by the infectious new Lonely Island single “Mona Lisa” (which sees fit to call Leonardo da Vinci’s infamous muse overrated).
Granted, much of the comedy teased thus far is entirely in keeping with what’s come before from Lonely Island on record and TV, though being able to kick back and relax while Samberg, Taccone, and Schaffer pump out their stereotypically lurid jams may be an option too enticing for many fans of the trio to pass up. Much like how Keanu served fans of the comedic stylings of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele well last month, Lonely Island super-fans are sure to flock to theaters to see Popstar next month.
Whether or not general moviegoers who are less than fond of such hit SNL digital shorts like “Lazy Sunday” and “I Just Had Sex (feat. Akon)” will find Popstar even passingly amusing remains to be seen. However, for those who are already proud owners of the first three Lonely Island studio recordings, Popstar is sure to be a studio comedy that you won’t want to miss.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping will see theatrical release in the U.S. on June 3rd, 2016.
