When Sony launched the PlayStation 3 back in 2006, the console stumbled out of the gate. An impossibly high price point and overblown promises hurt the PS3 early in its life cycle, causing sales to lag behind the Xbox 360 for most of the last generation. Sony managed to correct a number of their launch problems, but the first few years on the market proved difficult.
Sony took those tough lessons to heart with the launch of the PlayStation 4. The PS4 is the most successful console of the current generation, easily outpacing the competition. With just over two years on the market, the console has sold over 30 million units worldwide. While Microsoft hasn’t released current sales figures, most estimates have the PS4 outselling the Xbox One two-to-one. Additionally, marketing studies have since indicated that PlayStation was the best selling console of Black Friday 2015, further increasing the sales gap.
Sony’s marketing team is intent on keeping their lead, announcing that two of the currently available PlayStation 4 bundles will be discounted for the holidays. From December 6th through December 19th, both the Star Wars: Battlefront Standard Edition PS4 Bundle and the Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection PS4 Bundle will be available for $299.99.
The Battlefront bundle features a 500GB PS4 and Dualshock 4 controller, along with a copy of the recently released game. There’s also a digital voucher included for four classic Star Wars games: Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, and Star Wars Bounty Hunter. The first of those titles originally released on the Super Nintendo, with the rest launching on the PlayStation 2.
The Uncharted bundle also includes the console and controller, along with a copy of The Nathan Drake Collection. The game features a remastered version of the original three Uncharted titles, though the multiplayer component has been removed. The bundle will also give players access to the exclusive Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End multiplayer beta, running from December 4th through the 13th.
These discounts are comparable to those offered by a number of retailers throughout Black Friday weekend, so this is great news for any would-be console buyers that missed out on the sales. With the standard console price currently sitting at $349, these bundles are easily the best choice.
At its current sales rate, PlayStation 4 is outpacing the PlayStation 2 – the bestselling home console of all time. With the number of holiday sales and bundles still to be determined, that rate is likely to increase a significant amount by the end of the year. This doesn’t necessarily mean the PlayStation 4 will overtake its predecessor as the bestselling console. A number of factors, including competition from the Xbox One and Nintendo’s upcoming NX, along with a shifting marketplace make the possibility seem unlikely. Still, if Sony manages to keep their momentum, it stands the best chance of ‘winning’ this console generation.
The PS4 Bundle holiday sales start on December 6th, 2015.
