In yet another underwhelming box office, there was a big shake-up at the top with the reigning king dropping to number 3.
Skyfall reclaimed the top spot this weekend with $11 million after spending 4 straight weeks sitting behind Twilight. James Bond's 23rd adventure has been racking up records left and right over its 5 weeks of release, and now we have a new one to add to the mantle: highest grossing Sony film.
While the film still has a ways to go in terms of a domestic total (it is currently at $261 million), its $921.4 million worldwide total puts it at number 23 on the all time top grossers list, and, more importantly, above the previous Sony title holder Spider-Man 3.
Right behind Skyfall, at number 2, is Rise of the Guardians with $10.5 million. Though the film has already been labeled as a box office failure by analysts, it continues to hang around in the top 3. Unfortunately, it isn't generating all that much box office revenue in the process. The film is now up to $61 million in domestic grosses.
At number 3 is The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 with $9.2 million. It was bound to happen sometime – the inevitable fall from grace – but thankfully for Summit, this 5th film in the franchise was able to rake in $268 million in its first three weeks of release.
Nipping at Breaking Dawn's heels is Lincoln with $9.1 million, which brings its domestic total up to $97 million. Though the Spielberg biopic is starting to taper off, we expect it to still hang around, maybe even post an uptick, as awards show nominations begin to roll in.
Rounding out the top 5 is yet another member of last week's top 5, Life of Pi, with $8.3 million. As we noted in our November movie preview, Ang Lee's adaptation of Yann Martel's celebrated novel was going to be a tough sell, but $60 million in domestic grosses thus far certainly isn't bad.
Playing for Keeps – the only wide release for the weekend – opens in the number 6 spot with $6 million. For star Gerard Butler, who plays a former soccer pro now in charge of coaching his son's recreational team, this marks his second 2012 flop, with the other being Chasing Mavericks. There's currently no budget listed for the film, but with a cast that includes the aforementioned Butler, Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman, and Dennis Quaid, among other big stars, it presumably couldn’t have been made for cheap.
At number 7 is Disney Animation Studios' Wreck-It Ralph with $4.9 million. The film, which features the voices of John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman, is now up to $164 million in domestic grosses, $1 million under its production budget.
Red Dawn comes in at number 8 this weekend with $4.6 million. MGM's remake of the 80s cult hit failed to land with audiences, but it has generated $37 million in domestic grosses.
Coming in at number 9 is Flight with $3.1 million. Robert Zemeckis first live action film in over a decade is now up to $86 million in domestic grosses.
And rounding out the top 10 is Killing Them Softly with $2.7 million. We noted in last week's box office post that the film wouldn't need much to surpass its $15 million budget. However, The Weinstein Company was hoping for more out of the Andrew Dominik directed film.
