Regular Screen Rant readers will know that 20th Century Fox has been slowly and ever so quietly developing a Planet of the Apes prequel, which is tentatively titled Caesar: Rise of the Apes . Well, it looks the special effects maestro Aaron Sims (shouldn’t that be simian?) is now attached to the project.

Sims spoke to MTV about the Planet of the Apes prequel at the Clash of the Titans premiere, and when he was quizzed about the potential primate project, he said:

“They’re just starting. There was another director. It’s in the process right now.”

When asked to confirm if there was a director Sims said:

“No–. We’re just starting on that project, it’s just coming around.”

This seems to gel with what we already know about the new POTA film, which (at this early stage in development) will be a prequel to the 1968 Charlton Heston original. Screenwriter and director Scott Frank was originally going to bring the project to the screen, however there reports that The Escapist director Rick Jaff was going to be the organ-grinder on the project after Frank and Fox had a different opinion on which direction the film should move in.

Now, if Jaff (or somebody else) is directing, then it looks like this film is still gaining momentum – why else would a special effects artist already be onboard if there wasn’t serious studio support?

Apes Franchise Gets The Kiss Of Life

When asked what stage he was currently at with his work, Sims replied:

“Looking at a lot of chimpanzees and apes”.

I imagine that his work will evolve from there (see what I did there?).

At least there’s one good piece of news in the interview with MTV – when asked if Tim Burton was once again directing (after his disastrous 2001 Planet of the Apes remake) Sims said:

“No, it’s not going to be Tim.”

Burton’s probably off looking for his next established property to destroy!

  1. Not shy about your opinion of Burton, are you?

  2. What a hell?? the 2001 remake was the greatest remake ever made of any movie… I can't believe it sunk.. I've watched it a dozen times and every time I love it even more..

  3. Yeah, come on, the remake was pretty good… I was hoping they'd come out with another one based on the end scene with the ape police… and exploring the underground world of the mutants is always fun… as much as I'm a big fan of the original POTA movies (and the TV show!), I think remakes of these properties could be really cool–and a great pop-culture way to battle the morons that think intelligent design is a pretty nea tidea.

  4. I'm looking forward to this, but I'm also in the camp that believes the Burton remake was pretty good. Sure, the Heston film was better and is a classic but the remake was also fun.

Also, I wouldn't call someone who believes the universe just happened a moron, so I would appreciate not calling me a moron for believing in an all-powerful being who designed it (this is for giljamesbavel, of course).
