During the last few years, the a cappella female comedy franchise, Pitch Perfect, has been quite the surprise. The first movie, headlined by Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, showcased how they could put a new spin on "musicals" in a non-traditional manner. The Bellas came back last year to mixed reviews, but that did not stop Pitch Perfect 2 from doubling the worldwide gross. Despite that success, Pitch Perfect 3 hit a bump in the road when Elizabeth Banks announced she would not return to direct as initially planned, but the film has since course corrected itself to get back on track.

The most recent form of good news came with Trish Sie being called upon to direct the movie, which has allowed pre-production to continue along in the form of potentially adding their first new cast member.

Variety is reporting that Orange Is the New Black star Ruby Rose is in talks to join the ensemble in an undisclosed role. She could be an edgy new addition to the Bellas, but could just as easily be part of the rival group that they will inevitably find themselves competing against.

While Rose has not yet officially joined the project, it could be her latest attempt to add some level of diversity to her resume. Outside of the Netflix hit series, she has four action films on her upcoming slate already - Resident Evil: The Final ChapterxXx: Return of Xander CageJohn Wick: Chapter 2, and Meg. Joining this franchise at this point in her career should allow her the opportunity to show some of her comedic timing and her vocal range if necessary.

At this time there have been no plot details released for the third installment, but since Pitch Perfect 2 ended with Beca (Kendrick), Fat Amy (Wilson), Aubrey (Anna Camp), and the majority of the Bellas graduating, it will be interesting to see where Rose will fit in. It appears as though Hailee Steinfeld's Emily has been put in charge of the club, and brining in someone like Rose would certainly continue to break the traditional Bella mold that had been in place.

However, she may be better fit to be the leader of an opposing all-female a cappella group that are the complete opposites of the champion Bellas. This direction would be one that keeps the films cast and story female driven, but also offers up an element that has not yet been explored in these movies. The Bellas have proved over the last few years that all-female groups can be nationally and globally recognized, so to have other groups try and emulate their success seems like a natural progression. None of this is likely to be revealed for some time as the movie has yet to begin filming, but the possibility of Rose joining could open the door for quite a few possibilities.

Pitch Perfect 3 will open in US theaters on December 22, 2017.
