The Pitch Perfect franchise has been a surprise hit for Universal, combining modern and old school songs together to bring a new spin to theaters. The movies have so far given Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson a boost in popularity and notoriety, but the supporting cast in both films also have their fair share of moments. Following her producing credit and role as Gale in the first movie, Elizabeth Banks stepped into the director’s chair for Pitch Perfect 2. Despite better box office earnings, the movie dipped in critical and audience reception.

Although Banks’ directing style was not entirely the problem, it was announced she would not return as the director for Pitch Perfect 3 earlier this year. The search had been quiet for some time, causing an eventual push in the release date, but they have now found the next director.

THR is reporting Universal has signed on Trish Sie to be the next director for the franchise. Sie is not a high profile director for film, with Step Up: All In being her only directing credit so far. She has however had plenty of experience directing music videos for OK Go, including their world famous treadmill video for the breakout hit “Here It Goes Again.” To celebrate this announcement and her approval of the choice, Banks tweeted the following photo of her and Sie together.

Even though Sie is not a well versed film director, she does bring a new perspective to the evolving franchise. Both movies have had great musical renditions and numbers performed by the various groups, but Sie’s experience with music videos could help the numbers reach a new level of creativity. Outside of the treadmill idea, she also filmed a music video in zero gravity for OK Go, so she could bring new creative concepts to the singing and dancing.

While everyone should remain optimistic that Sie is the right choice, she will be in charge of directing the third installment that will find both Kendrick and Wilson away from the Bellas. Last we saw of the all female a capella group, the majority of the team had graduated, leaving Hailee Steinfeld in charge. Whatever story they decide to tell, do not be surprised if Sie calls in favors from other musical pals for cameos. The franchise has already featured appearances from Snoop Dogg and Pentatonix, so OK Go or other bands she knows could be in play as well.

Pitch Perfect 3 will open in US theaters on December 22, 2017.
