Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Captain Jack Sparrow teaser Captain Jack Recruits Pirates in Stranger Tides Teaser Trailer

During the Tron Legacy panel at this year’s Comic Con, Disney surprised audiences by showing a 3D teaser for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

The teaser consisted of Johnny Depp as the fan-favorite pirate Captain Jack Sparrow speaking directly to the camera, teasing (in his own unique way) the plot of the fourth movie in the franchise.

At first plot details for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, (aka Pirates 4), were being kept under wraps but last month we finally got a full synopsis for the film – confirming that the story will follow Captain Jack’s search for the Fountain of Youth (we already knew that was the general plot but it’s always nice to get confirmation).

But if Captain Jack is be trusted in this teaser, there’s a whole lot more to it, “including, but not limited to, zombies, cut-throats, mermaids, and the vicious and vivacious Penelope Cruz.” Talk about breaking the fourth wall!

Take a look at the teaser below:

The teaser may not provide any real footage from the movie but it was still a great way to tease the audience – until the filmmakers get a bit more work done (particularly the CGI) to show off. The teaser comes after the first set image of Captain Jack appeared online via producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s Twitter.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is thankfully setting sail in a better direction than it took with the second, and particularly third movie (I still use the latter as a helpful tool to send me off to sleep). In terms of main characters, they’ve “replaced” Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley with Sam Claflin and Penelope Cruz. In addition, they’ve added an interesting new villain with Blackbeard (being played by Ian McShane) – as well as selected an interesting piece of mythology to focus the plot on (the Fountain of Youth).

However, despite dumping a lot of the old baggage overboard that doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten about a lot of the characteristics that made moviegoers first fall in love with the Pirates franchise. The biggest welcome return is probably Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, who is arguably the best character of the original trilogy – and was certainly the best aspect of the third movie, At World’s End.

Hopefully a lot of the fourth movie will focus on the sparring (verbal and otherwise) between Captain Jack and Barbossa.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will hit 3D and regular theaters on May 20th, 2011.

  1. Not sure why our friends Lee Arenberg and his other comical cohorts aren’t included. They were the “character” of the films.

  2. thats gonna be great, looking forward to this one. who is directing it?

    • It’s Rob Marshall, who previously did Chicago (and was nominated for an Oscar for it). Strange choice but an intriguing one.

      • On Stranger Choices

  3. Is it just me, or does “Captain Jack Sparrow” become less interesting and humorous with each film. I thought he was brilliant in the first film and went downhill after that. This teaser makes me cringe with what they have down to the character that was once amazing.

    • It’s just you

      • LOL!

    • “Seth W” it is really just you, and you suck as a film critic, the second film was obviously the best of the 3, and now you can stfu, because no one cares what a dork like you has to say.

  4. How can you not FREAKING love Johnny Depp?!?

    • Just because Johnny Depp is a great actor, doesn’t mean everything he touches is gold. I reference ‘From Hell’, ‘The Ninth Gate’ and ‘The Astronaut’s Wife’.

      • actually from hell was GREAT. the ninth gate was polankis fault, depp was still good it.

      • Did i say every movie he’s done was great? No. I said he was AWESOME! Which he is :)

        • pik, i wasnt commenting on that YOU said LOL

          • What…? lol

  5. i am growing tired of his offbeat choice of roles these days though

  6. There is a cool video game coming out called Armada of the Damned that is set in the Pirates universe as well. I heard about it at ComiCon and saw a trailer online that looks sick. I think it comes out right before the movie.

    • good to see you back rogue-x!!

  7. Sign me up for the next Captain Jack Sparrow adventure.

  8. i never ended up watching the 3rd movie, not because i lost interest but the fact that the movie dragged on for over 2 hours turned me off.
whilst i like both the character and the actor (sparrow) i doubt i’ll watch this, imo the 1st was and will always be the best…. much like with every movie series.

    • The people that made the second and third movie, know that they both sucked, so their gonna make the fourth one be more in the realm of the first movie, and with the same tone of the first movie too, so that it will not suck.

      • so,the same people that made the first then too?

        • Yes, but the first movie didn’t suck, the people that made the second and third movies “behind” the camera, knew that Pirates 2 and 3 sucked, so they will not over do it with Pirates 4, and it will be more like Pirates 1.

          • im pretty sure the director and producer kept the same crew thoughout, and i think they film 2, and 3 back to back, in any even gore isnt directing this one as stated about, sooo, im hoping that it doesnt lose anything because of that.

            • Right. Gore Verbinski is not direction this one. Also, yes they kept the “some of” the same cast. Pirates 4 wont be filmed back to back with a Pirates 5. I wont lose anyting because of that, expect for the William Turner and Elizabeth Swann characters played by Orlando Bloom and Knightley, because their story ended in the third movie and, also because the decided to quit in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, for movies that are 100 times more boring then the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, which these movies are not boring at all!.

              • Look at all these replies!

                • There’s a bunch

                  • I have no life…
