The last we reported on the much-speculated Pirates of the Caribbean 4, it was when Johnny Depp updated fans about the possible sequel while talking up his other upcoming movies, Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows. Depp didn’t give much, but did mention that the project was in the early stages, with the filmmakers trying to get a script together, and that generally he’d love to do it. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer also reportedly said a little while ago that a script was being worked on at the moment.

In an update and extension of what all has been said about Pirates of the Caribbean 4 as of late, Disney Head of Production, Oren Aviv, has revealed some rather surprisingly forthright news: the fourth installment in the hugely successful franchise is hopefully going to shoot in the first half of 2010, and could possibly be the start of a new trilogy:
“We’re going to shoot ‘Pirates 4′ in April and May of next year… We are going to release it hopefully in 2011 is the plan… hopefully [to] be the first of another trilogy.”
Aviv went on to talk about what the story needs to be for Pirates 4, admitting that he wants everything to be less complicated for the next one (and beyond):
“It’s important to get the story right and it’s important to me to scale it down, because we can’t get bigger… The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters.”
Aviv also made mention of the fact that there’s a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow’s backstory that we haven’t gone into yet, but at the same didn’t say whether or not Pirates 4 would include any of that.
Bruckheimer also gave some more of his thoughts on Pirates 4 in a Q&A with TIME, confirming the fact that they’re working on a script. He sounds pretty eager to do another:
“I can’t wait to see it. We are working on a screenplay right now, and hopefully that will come together. These things are difficult to get right. We know Johnny [Depp] is interested in doing it, so that’s a good start.”

It’s interesting to hear the direction that the Head of Production of Disney wants to go with the Pirates franchise now. It’s so relieving to see he realizes how complicated (although unfortunately he states that made them compelling) the franchise got as it went on, and I’d personally love to see the type of scaled down sequel he’s talking about.
To me, the first Pirates movie was the only good one, with the two sequels being (as stated) overly-complicated and overly-long tedious messes (particularly At World’s End). One of the main problems was the concentration on the love story between Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley’s characters. Thankfully that probably won’t be included in the fourth movie, since Knightley has previously said she’s not doing another one (although we’ll see if the lure of a fat pay check changes that). And since Depp seems to be interested in returning as Captain Jack Sparrow, I really hope that’s where the concentration lies this time around.
Whether Pirates 4 does actually end up shooting next April and May as Aviv says is something we’ll just have to wait and see. But considering he’s the Head of Production at Disney, I’m pretty sure he has some idea of what he’s talking about.

Wow, 2011 is looking to be a year of big, big blockbusters. But I really don’t like when franchises jump to the fourth film, because then they’re only looking for more money. I’d like to see different things, try to follow James Cameron’s path, inventing new stories, you know?
While working on the Transformers Wrap-up Podcast last nite, I had Pirates 2 in the DVD player and – I dont know if it’s because of all the “followed the dotted line to the next step” like a grown up Dora tale or what, but something bugged me about that film. The third as well. Is there enough JUICE to push a fourth? I’m not too sure.
I like that they want to backstory of Sparrow…I just hope its only 2 hours b/c while I liked the sequels they just got longer and crappier.
Get rid of the love story and you will have a better film. Back story would be a great way to do things.
For me the Pirates movies were a frolic if you will. Fun and thrilling.The only downside for me is that there isn’t enough of an explanation as to how ended up bargaining with Davy Jones for the Black Pearl in the first place. If a there will be another trilogy I’d like to see Jack as the center of it all instead of the cause of it all.
I think that they left Elizabeth and Will’s story undone… so what.. he’s just allowed to see them every 10 years?? What about when she gets old and dies… or his kkid gets old and dies…?
I think that the Fountain of Youth would benefit them… so if its all Jack Sparrow searching for it and then sending Elizabeth and her son a vile of the water, as a thank you or something, I’ll get excited. IF it’s just obvious they’re coming back for the paycheck then, I’ll have to say I am not excited for it at all.
@Lily – correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the rule was you can come to shore after 10 years at sea as Davy Jones, but if your true love isn’t waiting for you you have to return to sea. But because Elizabeth and the kid are waiting for him he gets to return to land and his regular life for good? I thought that was how it worked. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong …
I think revealing background of Jack in a flashback is cool, but please no prequel story. Going after the Fountain of Youth could be interesting if they leave the Will and Elizabeth story out of it. The focus should be the competition between Barbosa and Sparrow.

I, and many other fans, longingly await the next POTC installment. The article states, “they’re are working on a script.” Two years ago, I passionately wrote a script and had it professionally reviewed by the people at Final Draft. The feedback was awesome and helped me refine it. It includes many of the elements of story lacking in II and III. The storyline is just that, a good story, and it’s less confusing. Problem is NO ONE AT DISNEY OR THE POTC FRANCHISE WILL EVEN LOOK AT IT. I have so many fresh and endless ideas. I actually become the characters when I write about them. IF THERE IS ANYONE CONNECTED TO THE FRANCHISE, PLEASE! PLEASE! GIVE ME A CHANCE. Let me at least chime in.
I think they should stop with the pirates ongoing and draging the story telling.
And Disney and crue should make their other pirate movies in development.What is happening with Captain Kidd movie tht writers Douglas Cook and David Weisberg have finished the script that was supose be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer?
We need to see some light of those real life pirates events.Its enogh with fiction crap.
I’m not saying jack Sparrow is crap, it all “work out well, been there, and done that” and now is time to move on with something diferent, so far there is no need to continue with him, they need to stop.
We have seen enogh from the Pirates Franchise, and there is no point going back.
Gore verbinski is rightand no wonder he is not interested anylonger to continue. He has done with it and thats it end of story.

Yeah, maybe the fourth movie will be more in toan to the first movie!. Which is what i think their planning on doing!. So that it seems as original as the first movie either way!.
A movie/johnny depp website called “ohjohnny.net, is now saying that pirates of the caribbean 4 is coming out on may 25th, 2011 wednesday, which is according to a pirates of the caribbean 4 theatrical release date daily count down that is on that website!. Check it out!, if your interested in seeing on there!.
Since the mwalt disney pictures website called disney.go.com, says that pirates of the caribbean: on stranger tides is coming out in summer 2011, then that does mean that it WILL be coming to theaters on July 8th, 2011 Friday, because summer does start in june, not may, and disney would be releasing the fourth movie in july, sothat means that the date July 8th, 2011 friday is The date that WILL be coming out on to movie theaters nation wide!.
