Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Catches A Mermaid

Published 5 years ago by , Updated August 14th, 2013 at 3:40 am,

Recently we heard news that Stephen Graham and either Max Irons or Sam Claflin were joining the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Now we’re hearing word of another new casting addition. Read on for all the details.

According to an official press release from Walt Disney, French actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey has joined Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as a “beautiful and alluring mermaid,” with the role being described as “key.”

If I’d heard this casting news from another source (i.e. not an official press release from the studio) then I might have thought the role to be relatively minor in the overall scheme of things. But the official announcement suggests she really will be an important part of the story.

So who is this actress? Well, she’s not been in much – just a few French films and TV shows to her name – but something tells me she was chosen for more than just her acting skills. The words “beautiful and alluring” are certainly applicable 😛 .

What’s probably more interesting than who is playing the mermaid is the fact the Pirates franchise has evidently expanded and is bringing in more fantastic creatures and myths. I’m definitely interested to see how a mermaid fits into the announced plot of Captain Jack searching for the Fountain of Youth. Will Syrena the mermaid be a help or a hindrance to his quest?

In case you want to know more, you can check out an excerpt from the the official press release from Disney below:

Astrid Bergès-Frisbey has been selected by producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall to star in the key role of Syrena, a beautiful and alluring young mermaid, in Walt Disney Pictures’/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ epic adventure “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the fourth in the blockbuster series of films. Bergès -Frisbey joins Johnny Depp, returning in his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow. The film is slated to open on May 20, 2011.

Born in Barcelona of French-American and Catalan parentage, and now based in Paris, Bergès-Frisbey, one of France’s brightest young stars, appears in such French films as “La Fille du Puisatier,” “Bruc,” “Extase,” “La Premiere Etoile” and “Un Barrage Contre le Pacifique.” She has also appeared in the telefilms “La Reine Morte,” “Elles et Moi,” “Divine Emilie” and “Sur le Fil.” Berges-Frisbey appeared on stage at the Theatre Marigny in a production of Peter Shaffer’s “Equus.”

What do you think of Pirates of the Caribbean 4 adding a mermaid to the story? What do you think of the actress cast in the role?

Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides starts filming in June (in places like Hawaii, the UK and Los Angeles) and has a release date of May 20th, 2011

  1. Let's throw even more crap into this film. Maybe it'll make it good.

  2. …. mermaids?
Okay, let it be said, I have wanted very badly to be excited about this. It just got weird. Mermaids? Really? Blackbeard, Jack Sparrow, and mermaids??

  3. @Michael, and @ Chaos-

Hey guys, this news about mermaids in Pirates 4 sounds good!, and think about it for once, that this movie was going to already have that stuff in it, because it's already based off of a book that has that kind of stuff in it!.

  4. I'm not too sure about this. Mermaids can be incredibly lame.

  5. She looks like a mermaid alright

  6. Ya what the heck!… a mermaid is like the only thing missing from the frist 3 movies. I would have expected to see a mermaid in this one…. sounds good to me.

  7. OOOOOOOkay little weird. Fine wit mermaids. I'm afraid of the new director Rob Marshall who has only directed musicals. If this turns out like terminator 4. I will go crazy and send angry letters to Disney.

  8. why is she such a homely mermaid? couldn't they find a pretty mermaid that didn't look like a boy?

  9. That is a great idea to see Mermaids in the Pirates of the Caribbean 4

  10. How can ppl complain about mermaids when the last 2 movie had fish people as the villains!!!

  11. @James –
Your absolutely right about that!. The last two movies did have fish people in them, so it's crazy for anyone not expect there to be mermaids in Pirates 4, and not only that, but it's going have elements from from the “on stranger tides” novel that already has mermaids in it!.

  12. my only question is: What the hell have they done to tim powers' plot? it should have fit with only a few minor changes, but adding mermaids? penelope cruz? this deal is getting worse all the time.

  13. Pray they don't alter it any further.

  14. And in the first an entire crew of the damned, that was dead, but not dead, and appeared as walking corpses in the moonlight, Mermaids really shouldn't throw anyone too much.

  15. I auditioned for Syrena…..that would have been a fantastic dream! I'm a Disney lover and I love the mermaid twist! Wish I could have been a part of that Production! Wonder if they need extras? Hmmmm.

  16. mermaid is unattractive…the film did not need her addition….

    • Not ALL Disney Mermaids can be either Ariel or Madison (from Disney spinoff Touchstone Pictures’ “Splash”, played by Daryl Hannah); give her a break!

  17. I’m with Mike!

What’s really up with the mermaid played by a woman that looks like a boy?? Even with make-up, I cannot foresee her being attractive. Oh well….

    • Have you seen her in other photos? She’s GORGEOUS!

  18. I’m French and I don’t know this actress. But I’m all for trying out new people too.

  19. I’m excited about that. There are not enough quality portrayals of mermaids in cinema. I don’t understand that. The whole mermaid myth is so interesting!

And I love when they’re good but I also love when they’re troublesome. I kind of hope she’s both.

  20. I love the idea of throwing a mermaid in the mix !
Mermaids are supposed to be sexy and mysterious, and who knows maybe this girl can pull that off !

I think she’ll be very pretty with all the cosmetics that people can do nowadays.. I just hope that they’ll actually make them look like legit mermaids. And what happened to Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush, and Orlando Bloom ?!?!?!?! Are they trying to make the movie go to crap ? Cross your fingers and hope that this movie pulls it off !

  21. Megan Fox would have made a good lookin mermaid too (;
    hint ! hint !

  22. She’s not French. She’s Spanish, born in Barcelona.

  23. Well turns out they did great with the mermaid part, pulled it off great i just watched it last nite. Hope their going to make a part 5, if so, i can’t wait

  24. Guys i watched dis movie last night only. The mermaid was rly cute n amazing

  25. I have seen this movie more than 50 times and now I am admitting that I had never seen such a beautiful hairstyle before!(the mermaid’s)
