Update: Disney has announced which actor is playing “the new Orlando Bloom” character. See below for details.

Despite initial hiccups (such as whether Johnny Depp would return or not) Pirates of the Caribbean 4 has been moving forward quite smoothly for awhile, especially when it comes to casting.

After it was confirmed that Depp would be returning as fan-favorite Captain Jack Sparrow, we learned of two new major casting additions: Ian McShane (as the villain Blackbeard) and Penelope Cruz (as Blackbeard’s daughter and Captain Jack’s “equal”).

Now we’re hearing word of some possible new Pirates of the Caribbean 4 casting additions, one of which may be pretty major.

Firstly, Production Weekly Tweeted that Stephen Graham (Public Enemies) is currently in talks to star in Pirates of the Caribbean 4 as a character called “Scram.” No other details were given, but I’m guessing the character is one of the pirates either helping or hindering Captain Jack’s quest to find the Fountain of Youth.

I personally think Graham would be a great addition to the cast, and I’m really glad to see him taking off as an actor, as I’ve admired his performances for quite some time (if you haven’t checked out his performance in This Is England,do so ASAP).

Moving on to a potentially more significant Pirates 4 casting addition, E Online is reporting that two relatively unknown actors, Max Irons and Sam Claflin, are both in the running to be the franchise’s new young heartthrob, now that Orlando Bloom won’t be returning.

Neither of the actors are all that well known yet, but both have onscreen experience: Irons (son of actor Jeremy Irons) appeared in the recent Dorian Gray and had a bit part in Being Julia alongside his Dad. Claflin only has a couple of recent credits to his name: The Lost Future and the British TV mini-series, The Pillars of the Earth (alongside Ian McShane, funnily enough).

Update: We now know which of the two actors will be playing the new young swashbuckler character to sort of replace Orlando Bloom – Sam Claflin. He will play the role of “Philip, a youthful missionary.” No other character details were revealed.

I’m not that happy to hear that they seem to be bringing in the same types of stock characters to populate Pirates of the Caribbean 4, as I was hoping for a fresh direction after the… disappointments of the second and third movies.

Neither Bloom nor Keira Knightley are returning, but now they’re looking to bring in a new young hunk actor to replace Bloom – and the description of Penelope Cruz’s character being “feisty” isn’t exactly dissimilar to Knightley’s character.

What do you think of the latest casting news for Pirates of the Caribbean 4? How do you feel about them bringing in another young swashbuckler – Sam Claflin – to replace Bloom?

Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides is set to start shooting this summer under the direction of Rob Marshall (Chicago). It sails into theaters on May 20th, 2011.

  1. they should just leave the whole “young pirate” characters out and focus on sparrow barbossa and blackbeard. the young “learners” were used to thier extent.

  2. Hopefully the new young pirates have small role in this movie.

  3. I am offended by the term “new Will Turner”. There is only one Will and Orlando will be greatly missed by me and all his fans. I no longer have any interest in this tired franchise. How many times can Jack Sparrow stumble around in a drunk haze. I think Johnny is awesome but i will truly miss the love and tension between Will and Jack. If Orlando ever decides to return to POTC i will again buy a ticket to ride the waves with Pirates.

    • I think not watching pirates of the carribean 4 because orlando bloom isn’t on there is a bit over reactive… it’s still going to be the same movie only with different characters. And after all after doing three of the movies you can’t expect the same actor/actress again. Maybe Orlando is working on some other movie and CAN’T be on this one. Or something came up other than that and he can’t shoot this one but you never know, he might end up being on there either way. Either or i expect it will be a great movie and i’m looking forward to watching it.

  5. The tally is in, ALL OF US agree that a “Different” direction is great, but do not, I repeat, do not try to substitute Orlando Bloom (who is the Will Turner) or Keira Knightley (who is the Elizabeth Swann-Turner).

This I believe would create so much 'Backfire' from fans and, honestly, I would consider it being “Franchise Suicide” for the entire 'Pirates' Legacy.

    • Pardon, but Will and Elizabeth were completely their own people. There are not going to be “replacements” for them, they are simply moving on. if Ornaldo and Keira think that their roles are finished and want to move on, then their fans should move on and deal with it also.

  6. Couldn't agree more with this !

  7. Why? If you can't get the actors back just write them out of it. Recasting is lame. I agree whole heartedly with Corey Natale Kaler.

  8. I think you folks are missing the whole point here. They are not using different actors to play Will and Elizabeth. And There will always be multiple plots cirulating to make an intersting story, therefore there will always be more characters used than Just Jack, Blackbeard, and Barbossa. The idea is to tell a great story. New direction means new story and new blood. I think its great and I look forward to this new addition to the series. All negative remarkers will be eating there words when this comes to the screen. There are brilliant people working here to create something great and I am certain they will suceed.

  9. dude, they arent recasting. the new actors are NOT playing the same characters (Will and Elizabeth) they are totally different character.

  10. I've read Penelope Cruz will be Depp's equal. I think that is a shame. Just let Depp shine and have center stage. That's the way everyone wants it anyway. That is the way it was in Pirates 1 and that is why it was such a huge success and surprise. Everyone just wants to worship Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. Will you just let us!

  11. I agree with this. Start fresh and just bring back those two.

  12. I agree! I'm not a big Bloom fan, so losing him is no big loss for me, same with Knightly. The key character is Jack Sparrow and if this film is taking a slightly new directions with a central female character that is Jack's equal, which Knightley's character was not, I think it sounds promising. Here's hoping the “young pirate” is also a mino pirate as well.

  13. Cruz and Ian No prob ,but come on dont give us someone just like Will from the last 3 films.

  14. Doesn't anyone (including the people that talk about “replacement hunks” READ books? The main character in the book IS A YOUNG MAN. If Disney is keeping characters from the book, the part HAS to be cast with SOMEONE. What doesn't show up in the book is Blackbeard's daughter. Don't know about “hunks” especially opposite Depp but it seems anyone in that age range who ends up on screen ends up with a legion of fans, for a while anyway.

  15. YAWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

  16. I think its a good idea to keep them out and maybe in the 5th movie (if this one doesnt flop)
Orlando Bloom and Kiera Kneitly will return as there old characters – besides they werent aloud to see each other for like 10 yrs anyway since will turner turned immortal and couldnt be on land for a while so i guess it makes sense, and why would kiera's character stick around if he's not there? that makes sense to me as well, and as for a young pirate c'mon we all need a little eye candy!!!

  17. AYE, Jennifer *rolls around laughing at the idea of Keira standing on a beach for 10 years* Well said and good ideas – besides, I never heard of Keira before POTC, and Orlando only because of LOTR. Don't remember Jennifer Hudson having any acting experience, and she brought home an Oscar. Don't think POTC would cast anyone who can't act, their casting has been perfect.

  18. This movie will either be good or awful. There will be little room for in between. That's my prediction.

  19. Wow they shouldnt replace orlando bloom they should cut the character out if bloom wont return. Not only that, i repect how they are bringing in a pirate (Blackbeard) that actually existed. that should bring a good twist to the series. i don't like the fact that there is a new director because the original director did a fascinating job with the first 3. Well i guess fans of the series and critics will judge this NEW DIRECTOR when the final film comes to theaters. Hopefully he doesn't disgrace the name of the series with his new ideas.

  20. I think it's crap that orlando bloom and keira knightley are not going to be returning. Johnny depp, bloom, and knightley are what made the entire movies worth watching.Bloom and Knightley could at least make a cameo apperence. To let us know they are still in love. And They had a son in the 3rd one. They could make him appear in this fourth one as well..

  21. This movie can't be better then the others. Not without Davy Jones.

  22. i think they should leave orlando bloom and just let it flow for once can we have a movie series that finishes with all the original characters please!!!!! i mean come on its orlando bloom dont replace him with ameture “underwear models” who dont know the part as well as orlando

  23. i tottally agree with that orlando bloom is will turner and it wouldnt be that magical spark it is without him

  24. I think that Bloom & Depp & Knightly should have stayed in the film…it will NOT be the same without them.

  25. I totally agree. I think they should somehow get them to join in the movie, just this time, because it won't be the same. It would be missing that key element.

  26. neither bloom or knightly's character have much more to say at this point so i think its okay that thier not in the film now. Maybe in later films Sparrow and Turner could team up again. I do think it would be cool to see thier son play a role in the film though. He could be looking for his father, depends though when the film takes place.

  27. they need to either have the old actors back or just cut them out while the 3rd movie wasnt the greatest i hope this one is better but they shouldnt recast its a stupid idea

  28. i totally agree with u they made the movie exciting and if there not in it that just mess up the whole 3 movies. and im proberly wont even watch the forth if Bloom and Knightly isn't in it

  29. replacing kiera and orlando is just impossible! The new people coming in may be good at their role i’m not going to just judge them straight away, but there should be fresh personalities in the film, not the same types of personalities. Both characters are most likely going to be the same as elizabeth and will! Glad jacks still going to be there, would definately not be right without him, and davey jones not being there will be a shame too! I loved all 3 of the other films thinking the third one was definately the best one, other than the odd bits in the film like the end with with elizabeth on land, and will becoming the next davey johnes, will turners locker? just doesnt sound right!
And I dont know what they can really film as they’ve done so much in the third one, all the characters together at the end for a massive fight, main and less important, cant get any more than that!
