Penelope Cruz Joins Pirates of the Caribbean 4

THR is reporting that Academy Award-winning actress Penélope Cruz will be adding a bit of spicy flavor to the upcoming fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which is titled On Stranger Tides.

Details on Cruz’s character are being kept under tight wraps, although it is being floated that, “she is to be [Jack] Sparrow’s foil and equal in many ways.”

At first mention it seems odd to think that Penélope Cruz would be hopping aboard Pirates of the Caribbean. Then again, if you had asked me back in the early 2000 era if I’d ever expect actors like Johnny Depp, Stellan Skarsgård, Bill Nighy or Geoffrey Rush to make a series of films about a rusted Disney ride, I would’ve laughed at you. If you had said the names Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightley were doing it, though, I would have said, “Figures.”

So there you have it: Cruz will be joining Johnny Depp and director Rob Marshall (who directed Cruz in Nine) for On Stranger Tides. The script is being written by Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio and the story is based on a novel by Tim Powers. Shooting is slated to begin in Hawaii this summer. Jerry Bruckheimer will once again super-produce the movie.

Happy to hear that Penélope Cruz is setting sail with the Pirates crew?

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is slated to hit theaters on May 20, 2011.

As if the second and third weren't terrible enough. I just hope they can have an exciting and funny film like the first one. And please, for the love of God, stop with the rum jokes.

Wow, I can see it work. And I know the direction they're going with her. seeing that Elizabeth was someone Jack had an easy time persuading, it's easy to conclude Penelope's character will be the opposite. That will be the only reason old cap'n Jack to become frustrated and start chasing said girl, instead of having them chasing him all over the Atlantic….

roger, i like how you said that!. That is exactly what i'm thinking!. I think Penelope Cruz and Johnny Depp would be a great duo, and i also thinkJohnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush and Penelope cruz would be a great trio, in a Pirates of the Caribbean kinda like Johnny Depp And Keira Knighley and Orlando Bloom all were!. Also, Do you think someone like Gerard butler wouldplay a great blackbeard pirate, as the villain in Pirates 4?, because the villain in the “on stranger tides” novel is blackbeard!.

As long as it's better than the third film, which should be the case now that they've gotten rid of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. I think their relationship slowed down the films. Penelope Cruz? She should fit right in.

OK…..now I am interested-it took me along time to warm up to Depp, now I just cannot see him doing any wrong. Depp and Cruz would be perfect on screen.

i like butler but he seems a little one dimensional.. i'd like to see blackbeard as someone a little crustier. look how good rush does. bring sean connery out of retirement…ooooo, we might be on to something….

Yes, Sean Connery would be a great choice for that role. But do you think he'd really be willing to play that role as Blackbeard in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie though???. Also, he'd have to grow a long black beard and get it colored black with hair products. I'm not sure i can honestly see him letting someone or anyone get his hair colored black for a movie!, do you???. Or do you think that if he were chosen for that role, he's do as he's asked, and go and get it done by himself after he'd get hired for the role, if he was???.

well, it was kinda' an off the cuff suggestion…
however, in response, i did hear that he was considering coming back to reprise his role as indiana jones's dad.
can probably fake a decent black beard, it would have to be pretty gnarly anyway.

Yeah, i see what your saying. So, i guess with the movie makeup of these days, that can probably be easily done!.

Daniel Day-Lewis would be an outstanding choice for blackbeard.

Well i just can't see him with a long blackbeard, and he doesn't look fat enough for the role of that charactor though!.

Just hearing that Penelope Cruz is going to be in this movie makes me actually want to see it. I’ve never been a bit Pirates fan, and maybe it’s because I haven’t given it enough attention. This could be the movie to change my mind.
