‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5′ Script Complete; Johnny Depp Not Yet Committed

Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean

Walt Disney Pictures certainly understands the value of striking while the iron is hot; the fourth installment in its swashbuckling ride-turned-blockbuster series, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, is a surefire smash (when it hits theaters in two weeks) so work on Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is already well underway.

Screenwriter Terry Rossio (working without his usual Pirates co-writer, Ted Elliot) has handed in his first draft of the script for a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean flick – however, the key ingredient to the Pirates formula (Johnny Depp) isn’t ready to push ahead with the next chapter just yet.

The early response to On Stranger Tides‘ standalone narrative structure has been positive enough to convince producer Jerry Bruckheimer that all future Pirates pics should follow suit. That means no more story arcs being covered over the course of multiple films (a la the second and third Pirates movies) and presumably no more grueling back-to-back shooting schedules.

Judging by Depp’s comments to THR about Pirates of the Caribbean 5, that’ll suit him fine. While the actor has yet to read Rossio’s script for the project, that’s seemingly not due to a lack of interest in making a fifth Pirates venture. As he put it:

“It boils down to story, script and filmmaker… It’s not something where I would say, ‘Let’s shoot it next month to get it out by Christmas 2012. We should hold off for a bit. They should be special, just like they are special to me.”

Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean 4

Disney execs did not approve of Depp's hesitancy.

While On Stranger Tides will definitely make a splash (excuse the pun) at the box office later this month, it seems fair to say that overall excitement for this new Pirates movie isn’t as high as that for some of its predecessors. Although the promise of a less overblown entry that still delivers everything moviegoers love about this series – namely, Depp’s incorrigible Captain Jack Sparrow, bizarre supernatural creatures, and entertaining set pieces – is enticing, there’s still the matter of this being the fourth time we’ve seen all that.

However, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 isn’t going to happen without Depp, regardless of how well On Stranger Tides plays out. So not only is his advice about not rushing another installment good to hear, but Disney should be inclined to actually listen (and acquiesce to his request, of course ;-) ).

Depp clearly loves the Sparrow character – and though I’d be lying if I didn’t say his act has felt a bit tired as of late, it’s all too apparent that enough people still adore Depp’s Pirates shtick enough to ensure that he’ll do it again in the future. So take all that as you will.

  1. Oh, please please please!
I really hope Johnny decides to do the movie.
They’re so very special to me. It would be the greatest in the world.
No matter what Johnny choices though, I support him.
If he thinks the 5th isn’t good enough, I’m sure all his fans would agree.
(Still, I really wish it would be good enough! Oh please, oh please! :3 )

  2. with out johnny the movie will not be good because johnny is the star of the movie series

  3. we are eagerly waiting for Pirates of Caribbean and for the one and only PIRATE CAptain Jack Sparrow

We’re all very excited on hearing that there’s atleast a new pirates project on hold for your decision. I’m am very excited and hope very much that you’ll concider the Pirates of the Caribbean 5.

  5. I`ve seen all 4 Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and I do a great amount of research on them. I also respect Johnny Depp as an actor. I love all his movies that I`ve seen. That beening said, I think I should be aloud to say we want the more Pirates, but we want Johnny Depp to be ready to make more Pirates. “`Neff said.”-Stan Lee

  6. If Johnny Deep is not in Pirates Of The Caribbean 5, to me it does not deserve the title Pirates Of The Caribbean. So please Johnny we really really need you in Pirates Of The Caribbean 5.Thanks.

  7. Johnny plz plz plz give a nod to the next part of the series of Pirates of The Carribean. Without you it wouldn’t be worth watching.

  8. COME ON JOHNNY WE ALL LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEAZZZZZZ DO IT!!!!!I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!

  9. The more pirate movies with Depp in them, the better! No ones growing tired of them, with every movie comes more fans with the sky as the limit for the future. Do what you got to do, we all can’t wait for what lies in the Caribbean future!

  10. I truley hope the 5th script is good enough, keeping all fingers crossed its will be and Jhonny will commit. Although, as others have commented if it’s not good enough I would not expect Jhonny to commit, and would respect him for that. I have read a few comments on how Jhonny’s acthad become ‘tired’ I will disagree, and say the last storyline was not as strong as the previous ones, and Jhonny was acting as he normally does…. Fantastically!!! Just a suggestion…. But maybe they should look into the origins of CaptainJack Sparrow, Im sure there’s one, maybe two movies worth there ;)

  11. i love pirates of caribbean and i’ve watched all the 4 i loved the first movie before i watch it because i learned johnny depp is staring in it of course everyone is eagerly waiting for pirates of caribbean 5 but nobody can imagine it without its most beloved actor johnny depp

  12. Oh, please do act on the fifth Mr. Depp. I am a big fan of yours, but without you on that film is just wont be the same.

    • what about johnny depps opinion ur all seeming selfish of course i want it to continue but i wont beg and what will u all do if he says no?

  13. I love Johnny depp! He’s the hottest, sweetest, cutest man in the world! I love him! Did u know he’s getting devorced?

  14. I agree that POTC would not be the same without Johnny Depp. And I can understand why he has decided to wait a while before doing another one. While we as serious JD fans will watch him in anything lol there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. I will enjoy seeing him as other characters for a bit before seeing him as Captian Jack again. He is so talented, he needs to keep doing projects that show that off and not make another Pirates movie just to feed the Hollywood money machine.

  15. Please Johnny please go for it and do this 5th part of Pirates cause “its a pirates life savvy” :)

    • Aye

    • I am sorry to say:
It is time to get a new hot handsome young one to play The captain. Jonhy is getting too tired and same sort of action.

      Let Jonhy have a rest.

I am sure if everyone works hard like before, so much effort put in like before, money spent like before, it all comes out will be good as well as before.

    • I totally agree with Beth

  16. While Johnny Depp could certainly cancel his contract I guess…

when Geoffrey Rush and him signed their contract for the firt movie, it signed them up for a total of 6, not just one. The entire series of films has been planned as 6 movies from the beginning.

  17. dannymiley go tv dvd 5
